I think we shall still go, but we just cut down on spending while we are away - probably do less miles once we are there. I shan't be spending any more money, so we will have to make savings elsewhere.

We dont smoke, or go to pubs (hardly ever), or bingo, or buy new clothes regularly, not members of gym, rarely eat out nowadays and have cut right down on most things generally. The very last sacrifice I would make would be my camping holidays. So, business as usual. I did consider cutting back on the distances last year but after a horrid year with health worrries amongst other things I too remembered the mantra- youre a long time dead!
Dont intend to make any changes, after nearly 40 years of caravanning i intend to carry on as usual. When i am physically incapable of continuing i would hate to look back and wish i had done this or that.
We feel exactly as per the last two posts. Oh, and remember to spend £60 in Tesco to get your 10p off a litre. I don't know about others, but I get quite excited about the various offers, only to work it out and discover that we have saved about 50p!
if fuel prices go up that much it will definately put a limit on us to which area we would travel too ,and how often we went surely it wont go up that much !!!!!
Last year I towed with aV6 2.5 rover 75. All the way to St Ives(not cheap). But the plan was to tow at a constant(ish) 50 on the mway and not try to reach maximum limit 60mph(it's a limit not a target). It did make a significant difference, but this year I will be going back to rover 75 diesel an applying the same principal.I have had the diesel version before and it easily did the 400miles with the caravan on on just the one tank. so may be take leaf out of my book and leave more time to get there. It works for me!
We are not going as far this year with the exception of our trip to the Yorkshire Dales we are staying fairly local. Have also opted for new forest instead of devon this year.
------------- Easter - Burford
May - WoodFarm Dorset
June - IOW
Aug - can't decided
October - Yorkshire
Plus many more weekends at every possible chance!
from last years increase we are having a range of 100 miles max in any direction when planning trips out.we have a V6 auto santa f'e only about 18 to the gallon when towing.being a retired motor engineer i know that buying cheap petrol is not economical in the long run.buying best petrol keeps the engine parts cleanso you get more miles per gallon anyway and fewer repairs are required.
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.

I have also found this in whatever vehicle I've had - supermarket fuels work out a lot more expensive than branded fuels, even with a 10p per litre coupon

my sentiments exactly . lost too many folk at a ridiculously young age .
1 life..live it !!
I will now make more use of cs and cl sites nearer home that way cutting down on milage and CS sites are also cheaper. This way we can continue to use and enjoy our caravan. I know some people believe that you must go far far away to enjoy a caravan / Camping holiday. I think that you can have the same enjoyment near to home and have a good time and some great views. Cost must always be a factor in everyones minds when planning any holiday or getaway.

well this year we have thrown caution to the wind. we are doing Morocco with the caravan, a total of around 4000/4500 miles.Portsmouth to Santander ferry down to Gibraltar & then over to Morocco for a 2000m tour & return via the med coast of Spain. As others have said "long time dead" fuel costs Morocco 50p per ltr!!!
We have decided to go on a seasonal pitch which is only 45 mins away from home, got rid of the big tow car which was costing a fortune in insurance road tax an fuel an got wife a little Corsa instead, saved £500 in road tax and insurance aslone!! (I have a big company car so could tow if really needed to) We now find we use the caravan a lot more and save on towing hassle an costs. Even with the seasonal fee if we used the van as much as we do now and had the extra costs involved we are still making a saving. Wont be everyones cup of tea but works well for us an the kids an thats the most important thing.
We have had static caravans and a lodge and came to towing as we wanted to tour and see different places.
At present I would cut back on eating out on our trips rather than forgo going away. Too much of this land still to see! If I was younger and fitter I would revert to a tent.
we just save in other areas, like food shopping, and go where we like in the van, usually stay on Cl,s and for frequent trips usually no further than about 50 miles away but always have a good trip to france each year, you only live once. Jx
