We're considering purchasing a more modern VW 4 berth 5 seater camper van as a tow vehicle and family vehicle rather than a conventional motor vehicle for the school runs etc. We purchased a tent a couple of years ago and use it on weekends, and use the caravan for the longer breaks. The idea if we go this way that that we use the camper van for the shorter breaks, and the caravan for the longer ones.

At the moment we would only use the tent on dry weekends, but with a camper van, we could extend the option to wet ones and do away with the tent.

I must admit I am really attracted to the full on motor homes, they are lovely things, but if I did, I'd get one big enough to tow a small-medium car.

Seems to be a very expensive way of doing it all though with very little benefit if you are doing it just for the fun. Full understand physical needs to change though.

We thought of that idea too tony before we bought our motorhome, I liked the look of the Hyundai i800 camper conversion to use as a towcar and occasional camper but OH decided that we would probable still end up getting rid of it after a while and buying a motorhome, (also may have been a bit cramped for 5 plus the dogs.

We've hired one for next weekend, see how we go, can't wait, really think this is the right decision.
I probably think we will go away even more with a MH .

Nice one Murano,

We are hoping this year we can get away more than we did with the caravan, You will love it I am sure.

Just take your time deciding on the right layout for you, It took us a while to find the exact one we wanted after having our ultimate perfect layout for us with the caravan,

Just had a look at yours in your gallery, it very nice, we are going to the dealers Saturday just to look at different layouts and see what works for us. We are excited, no more towing and easy to pack away, what's not to love lol.

We have thought of getting a MH but we would need a automatic one for us both .but when you get to the site how do you get about so that means we would have to get a small trailer to put a car on there .So you are going to have to pay insurance for the MH and car .and service them
So with the one car and caravan seems a better option for us.

Done the m/h and currently doing the caravan and can only concur with the comments made.

We only changed to the caravan as we want to use as a base and visit places so the car is the best option.

Although we have both said we will go back to the m/h when we retire or get too old to tow.

One of the best features of the m/h was going away on a whim.Chuck some clothes in grab some milk and bread and just drive.Find a nice site for the night or just a nice spot for some wild camping.Bliss.

Good luck with whichever avenue you decide and hope you both have good enough health to enjoy.

Same here. Owned a little Romahome and found it great for just upping and going, much easier than hitching up the caravan - and you can go out for days in it, which I miss. Now I have a caravan - I'm not much for the towing, hitching and pitching, but love being able to leave it pitched and go off in the car. And only the car (used all year round) is insured, so much cheaper than running two vehicles.

So I really want a motorised caravan with a steering wheel and detachable car! I don't think they've invented one of those yet! LOL!

You will definately go away more in a MH! Mine was quite tiny but I went to the Outer Hebrides and back, took three weeks. No way would I have done that towing a caravan!

Been and looked at a lot yesterday, we've narrowed it down to two layouts, we like the end bathroom , but think we may loose to much living space, what we really like it the end lounge with the side kitchen one side and the loo ect the other, and then the door and then the cab.
But we also like the side loo at the back with an end kitchen and then the more central living space where you can swivel the front seats round.
As I said we've hired one for next weekend , this is the latter layout, we are really looking forward to this.
But we are pretty certain we are going to get a MH , after spending a few hours sitting in them and imagining all the pros and cons, we think there's more pros than cons.
So if all goes ok, well pop the caravan up for sale, and also the car, as we won't need a land rover any more.

Brion thank you , hope your wife stays well, and when we've decided what were going for, will let you know , and keep an eye out for each other, better practice my waving arm.

Might not be an option to you,but we tow a car, very easy to hitch up ( about 2/3 min`s max ),and take a folding mobility scooter.

Well we loved it, certainly different, there are pros and cons, but the pros outweighs the cons,OH was very fit and healthy that weekend which was good but I did everything to see how I went, ( ok he had a play on the way home and whilst we were there lol) but the MH wins, the motor home we hired was a Ci Carioca 625, and that layout worked for us well, The floor space was good, and the overall feel wasn't as claustrophobic as I thought, not cold at all, and slept well, I don't know if we would buy that model but that layout yes, and it's not to big length wise but has everything in it. But the best bit? Packing up, oh my it was so easy, we got up had breakfast, popped the stuff away, rolled up the EHU cable, and off we went, I think it would of been better with all our own stuff in it, we only took basic stuff, if it was our own it would have our own stuff left in it.
We found parking was ok,we took it out to the town first googled to see where we could park it and found spaces, don't know how this would be in the height of summer, but it wasn't an issue at that time.
I'm a MH convert, the night before we went we collected the MH and bought it home, and put our stuff in, the morning we were off I just turned the key and drive away, it took a few minutes, it was great. And I arrived much more relaxed ,even though it was a strange vehicle, I
don't mind towing but I don't love it with a passion, I get a bit tense sometimes, I didn't have any of that, which was nice.
So yes it is a MH for us, we are putting the caravan up for sale next week, and our inheritance is coming within the next month, we won't be buying new, we didn't get that much lol, but it will probably be about six years to eight years old in our price range. The ci we hired was an 06 plate and felt modern and airy, and that was getting on a bit, we will probably buy private, my bro in law is a mechanic and OH is very good with damp spotting he often goes with people to look for caravans armed with his damp meter and a keen sence and feel.
Will miss the caravan , first we tented then TT and we've had three caravans , it's been fun and I would give anything up for OH not to have MS and I would even go back to a tent for that lol, but things change and we've been given the opportunity to be able to carrying on camping, which we might of had to at some point give up, and being away makes OH feel better he relaxes and that's good for him, and I relax too, it's a get away from things, so MH here we come.
Thanks all so much for your advice and help and as soon as we get our new toy, will let you know, so as you can keep an eye out for one motor home you'll know it's me I'm the poodle lady, so if you see a MH and two poodles, that'll be me
