I agree too. Most of these 'why take a TV?' posts seem to be based on the assumption that everyone watches loads of TV at home and camping is to 'get away from all that'. For some people it's the other way round - I don't have time to watch TV at home, whereas, away in the van on a dark evening it's a nice treat to occasionally watch a bit of telly (though admittedly it's hard to find anything worth watching these days...).

In all the years that we've been caravanning we have only taken the TV once so that I could watch the World cup, it wasn't even used to watch other programmes during that period.

We have found, that because we dont have a TV, we play far more board games with the kids than we would ever do at home and therfore we have a much better time.

To keep up to date with what is happeneing in the world we listen to the news on the radio or buy a newspaper every 2/3 days.

Even when I was a little girl (I'm in my mid 50s now) my parents had towing caravans. Dad had a little black and white tv that was powered from a car battery inside the caravan. So even wayyyy back then, you could have a tv in a caravan! It's not a new thing! I remember falling asleep to the sound of the TV turned low, me and sis were up the other end in bunks.

When I had a MH, I had something very similar, only 5 years ago. Now have a 12v/230v tv.dvd combi, very useful on rainy days and in the evenings for a DVD and relaxation!

I don't know why some people think that us folk who watch telly in the van somehow have a worse holiday because of it, it's like it's a competition to see who can have the most basic holiday and cope with the least amount of luxuries and that if you haven't had to endure physical hardship then you've missed out on something.

We have TWO tv's in the van, yes two, terrible, terrible people we are, one in the lounge and one in the bedroom.

Just because we have them doesn't mean we never play board games or do jigsaws or chat or sit outside.

Esther, two tv's how very dare you

I bought my caravan so I could do all the things I wanted, get away, read, admire the scenery, play games, have heat, wear one layer of clothing, have a cooker, pee in my own loo, watch a DVD or a bit of tv, and I love all those things it can offer, doesn't mean I'm having a crappy holiday just because I choose home from home comforts, I don't really get to watch much tv at home, or DVDs, I'm usually always running around busy doing stuff, so when I'm in my caravan and put on a DVD or a bit of telly, it's nice to just watch, as I've got nothing else to worry about, or collect or drop off.Its just relaxation, isn't that what camping is all about, however you choose to do it.

I know, I know, I feel I must also hold my hands up and admit that there is a DVD player built into one of them, I also use the microwave, hair dryer, straighteners, I wash in warm water and have the heater on if it's cold, oohh the shame.

I now feel the need to write 100 lines " I must not enjoy home comforts in the caravan, I must not enjoy home comforts in the caravan, I must not......."

Turn the clock back two years....we didn't have a tv in van then cancer struck and with it came chemo, radiotherapy, operation & more chemo. Our caravan was our comfort a place to breath in-between endless hospital admissions, we bought a tv and watched it often.....Tell me are you really enjoying your caravan holidays or are you to busy watching your fellow caravanners

Oh dear.  Well, guilty as charged.  My name is Annie, and I have a TV in my caravan. (Impressed with Esther admitting to two!!)

We don't always watch it though.  If it's a nice evening we're far more likely to be sitting outside, I like a chat with anyone who's passing, or taking a gentle stroll to a nearby hostelry if there is one.  I'm an avid reader, and we all enjoy boardgames and keep some in the van.  Ours has DVD built in, we may watch one if the weather is bad and I've picked up a supermarket bargain.

Personally, I don't care what anyone does in their van/tent on holiday, as long as they're enjoying themselves and don't disturb me too much.

When we go to a site we like to go out and about during the day, I'm sure some folk never venture far from their vans, it's the same thing, horses for courses.   Do I get sniffy about it?  Of course not, it's their holiday and how they enjoy it is, quite frankly, none of my business. I'm just glad that they do.
