Hi, we always tow at night down to cornwall ,set out at about 8 ,then we stop on the last service s on m5 pay parking legs down sleep . I find it less stressful towing at night motorways always quite just the odd racing driver ,but loads of space for them to overtake you
I think the best was when we set off at about 5am, had a couple of stops on the way and arrived at Newquay just before lunchtime.
However, now we have moved and we have our caravan in storage and cant bring it home we are faced with a bit of an issue as we need to get the van out of storage before it shuts at 5pm :-(
So this year we are thinking of driving down and stopping at services for a few hours and having a rest (maybe Taunton Deane etc).
Love the excitement of going down to Cornwall - never fails :-)

Very useful thread thanks for starting it and contributing. Not been down to Cornwall for a few years now and then not towing anything. Towed trailer down from north yorks to iow in one trip, but now have a caravan and go slower with that. Just been done the Norfolk broads and that was a long trip with 3 kids and a dog. We are restricted by storage opening time of 8am to 9pm so makes early starts difficult. For the Cornwall trip we have booked a site for overnight stay just north of bristol each way. Set off mid morning sat, so arrive mid to late afternoon, stay over and then set off the Sunday morning to get to final site mid afternoon. Are there any services recommended on the route down for breaks that have plenty of easy space to park up with caravan?
There's plenty of service areas on the M5 all with ampe parking areas for your outfit. We only use the MacDonalds al Collumpton because we only travel from just north of Bristol & normally need to pop in there for a quick breather and check round.
Parking a big caravan in there is best done at the far end in the section where the lorries park. We have managed in the caravan section with our outfit before but if it's busy it can be a bit restrictive.
You should avoid the bottleneck through the M5/M4 split by travelling down through Saturday and stopping overnight then going on down Sunday. Are you familiar with the area where your overnight site is booked booked north of Bristol?
Set off at 4 or 5am, I will be quiet on the m/ways,Do a stop at taunton, then stright down to c/wall, arrive around lunch time. You be fine, done it to many times now, so i am in c/wall 6 months of the year in the van.

Its not a hangover, its wine flu!
Hi Colley, I keep my van at same place as you by sounds. We are going down next Wednesday, we will leave Cas about 16:30, stop at Strensham for about an hour for a sandwich and a cuppa, then overnight at Taunton Dene services. Early start Thursday, leisurely drive down to Mevagissey with plenty of layby stops for breakfast and cuppa's.
Another thank you for starting this thread, its very informative. We are off to Cornwall for the first time next weekend. I'm used to driving to Plymouth with the van as we go to France most years but this time we have a rescue dog and she had never been used to being in cars and got very stressed, so we cancelled the France visit as the 8 hrs on the ferry alone could have been hell for her. However with patience she has come round to car travel so we opted for Cornwall instead. Plenty stops on the way down I think.
We have towed our van to Cornwall many times but as we have to go in high season, we try to avoid travelling in the middle of the day on a Saturday as this seems to be when all the traffic jams happen, especially around Bristol and/or Exeter.
We are in the Midlands, set of Saturday at about 2 o'clock (let the rush go before we do) make our way down as far as Weston Super Mare and stop off at the C&CC site there (about 10 mins. from motorway junction). That way we know we can get something to eat (plenty of restaurants and supermarkets close by), pitch the van somewhere safe and get a good nights sleep. It also means you have the usual site facilities so can have a shower etc. in the morning and get water and so on to make tea and breakfast.
We find that doing overnight stops on a site helps to make the journey part of the holiday. We usually do the same trip in reverse on the way home, so always book high season pitches Sunday to Sunday.
We have done overnight stops at the motorway services but found it was so noisy with trucks coming and going, we couldn't sleep properly.
Thankyou for some great feedback.I have just been reading through the latest ones,.We have decided to set off in the evening and drive through the night.Setting off around 7 and driving till we have had enough, maybe around 2ish then pulling in and having a few hours sleep.
Sorry to resurrect this thread, i've been reading through and there's some really great/useful information. The only thing i'm wondering about is the return journey and how that works, leaving site etc… We would really like to go back to Cornwall, had some amazing holidays there in the tent (Carnevas site, Porthcothan Bay) and now want to return with the caravan.

A very good pace to stop for the night or for 2 hours free is Sedgemoor services 10 miles past Bristol
bottom right of map, caravan area going south
top left going north. app half way.
Its very popular so if you can get in try to stop as close to the exit without blocking it so you dont get blocked in.
Previous to this stop in the bristol area look for the sign for (Cribbs Causeway) take this exit and keep going left and you will end up at ASDA where you can buy petrol at supermarket prices.

Oh I hate the M5 1st week of August and then every Friday and Sat, my advice is book a Mon on and a thur leaving day too, as there no escape, I live and work between M5 21 and 23, Sat by 8.30 am its a carpark for no other reason than bad lane discipline , but have a great time, Im orfff on May bank holiday :)
What time would you leave site for return journey though, assuming i was going to do it in one back to West Yorkshire?? Would you pay for Friday and leave friday evening? Just wondered whats best plan.

I've done Cornwall lots of times, I'm in the North West so about the same distance as you, it's easily done in one hit, I aim to leave site about 10am and am back in the house by about 6, that's with rest stops
buggar !! looks like everyone is going to Cornwall just when we have decided to go for the first time in years.I'm booked into Briarfields for one night ,its about halfway for me from Norfolk, sounds like a good site to me .I should have gone last year but a family bereavement prevented that ,the people at Briarfields took my payment for last year and put against this year, brilliant, unlike the C&CC site at Milton Keynes who just said tough luck !!!!! and kept my money
