It would be a good idea to have the caravan checked underneath to make sure all is well, also look at the loading of the van, the loading of the car, is the cars suspension all ok at the rear?
I would get all these things checked out along with car and caravan compatability, what would concern me is why aunit would go into a bad snake at just 2mph above the motorway speed limit.
Hope you get it sorted all ok!

Hmm not great advice when speed limit for towing is 60 on motorways !!

I wasn't advising that you should tow at 80 only that the outfit should be able to.

But you are right it isn't good advise to tow at 80.

The outfit should be more than capable if speeds up to 80 though.

One thing to take into consideration is how much weight the rear axle of your towing vehicle can take. Then measure the nose weight of caravan , luggage and people in car approximately.
This is some thing a lot of people forget. Most cars are designed to carry three people and a average amount of luggage.
So by the time you add the nose weight of the caravan the car could be overweight leading the outfit to be loaded incorrectly which could cause snaking.
Its all trail and error though and I'm sure lots of people would be more than happy to advise on loading caravan and car.

Hi all!

Sorry I didn't get to reply earlier. Thanks for all of your advice, it is much appreciated and has given me, as a newbie, lots of things to consider.

We are now back from our holiday. Had the most fantastic time and loved the campsite! It took us a very very long time to do both journeys! Five hours to Stonehenge from Kent and then eight hours from Exeter to Kent on the way home. We came back M5/M4 and got stuck in many a tail back. We had a giggle, there were loads of caravans going South on the M5. We counted 48 in a mile, lol!!! Never seen so many!

Anyway, I finally let my husband do a bit of towing on the journey as I was getting tired, and the van travelled well but we are still having a few problems with lorries passing. Maybe we just need to get used to it but my husband had a problem too but not to the extreme that I did.

I am careful with how the van is loaded, it's been to a weighbridge (as I am slightly OCD when it comes to these things!) and the noseweight is spot on. tyre pressures as they should be all round. Anyway, I am sure it is just the speed of the lorries so we took things very carefully.

Just one thing before I sign off-my husband is one of those people who is naturally good at everything, whereas I have to try at everything! He reversed into the tightest of spots on the site! I was all prepared to motor move into place but he insisted he did it, and, needless to say, bloody perfect! I love him but don't like him much at times!

Thanks again all x

Well done .
What engine is your Mondeo. I have always had a 2.0 we now have a 2.2 tdci. Lorries passing do cause a bit of snaking or it pulls you can always feel it.
They are brilliant tow cars . I think your caravan is fine though. Just make sure that the car is the right engine size. I must feel confident with my car. My husband doesn't like towing now . I do ask him to sometimes because the same as you it's tiring and can make you feel tense. But I do most of the towing. We have just returned from Weymouth. But we travelled down on a Sunday and returned yesterday ( tues ) we do avoid travelling on Saturdays if possible. I always say it takes a while to get used to the feel of the caravan on the back to begin this is because I am so used to driving everywhere. With out anything on the back.
Good luck to and well done again. I hope you were proud of yourselves.

Glad to see you back safe and sound and nice to know you had a good one, reckon you were pretty lucky with the weather.
Don't worry too much about the reversing, it's very much a 'Man thing', it comes naturally to us men you know. You may master it after a year or two with much guidance from the oh........Mick

Thank you. Our Mondeo is a 2l diesel 140bhp. It goes extremely well, even with the van on the back! It is amazing how quickly it picks up speed!
I love Weymouth. Infact it is all nice down that way, just a shame it takes so long. I have never been to Scotland and would love to try there some time but the journey puts me off. The children were very good - it is me who gets fed up stuck in traffic, lol!

Thanks Mick, you have just really tickled me and the hubbie found your comment highly entertaining and said he couldn't agree more!!
We were extremely lucky with the weather. We had a bit of rain at night and a shower one day but we were soaked through from the log flume ride anyway that we barely noticed. We had a wonderful week. Off to Tanner Farm, Goudhurst next week!

Interesting, several have mentioned tyre pressures. Nobody has mentioned the tyres themselves. With the van hitched up, go to the back of the van and see if you can push it sideways. If you can, it is the tyres flexing. Imagine this flexing as you get the side-draught of a lorry, and you begin to understand how you can get a snake. Obviously such things as correct loading, and the towcar play their part too, but don't under-estimate the part the tyres themselves play.

If you get this flexing, then check the tyres. Chances are they are basic caravan tyres which are no thicker than cycle tyres. It is well worth the cost of "C" rated tyres with stronger sidewalls and a thicker tread, and also reduce (eliminate?) the chance of a blowout.

A bus can come past my van in the next lane, and the first I know is when I see the bus in the side window.

Oh ok, thanks. We will give that a go. I assumed the tyres would be ok as they are ony a year old and only had around 100 miles usage when we got the van but as you say, they may not be as up to the job as they could be. I shall give it a wobble at the weekend.

I was saying to my hubbie last weekend that if We didn't see a lorry in the mirror, we would know it was there as it sucks us in and wobbles us!

Thanks again. I shall update on the outcome.

I had a new folding camper, and in 40 years of towing various trailers that was the first and only snake I have had. Yes its seriously scary. The noseweight of the FC was a little light (not much), but I'm sure the main culprit was the tyres. When we replaced it shortly after with this caravan, I replaced the tyres with "C" rated tyres, and I was staggered at the difference in both sidewall and tread thickness. The original tyres were as thin as cycle tyres.

The difference now is brilliant, I really never notice any effect as a lorry or bus goes past, and OH and I have now towed for over 12,000 miles using those tyres in all sorts of conditions.

Also the weight rating of the original tyres was just marginally more than the weight of the van itself, now the "C" rated tyres will stand almost double the weight of the van.

They are worth every penny for peace of mind.

When towing always be aware if large vans, buses, coaches, transporters are coming alongside by regular use of towing mirrors. If they are move to the left side of your lane (towards the solid white line on motorway) and make as much space as possible as they pass to minimise this effect

Well done on getting back out there and for updating from before

I agree with those who say the loading isn't correct if it began snaking at 62mph. Whilst I always cruise at 55-60mph I sometimes get up to 70+ whilst overtaking without issue.
