Watched a Bailey Unicorn being built last night on the Caravan Channel. From start to finish, including all the utilities supposedly being tested 3 times throughout the build.2 and 1/2 hours. I can see now why there is so many damp issues. I also noticed that not only did he not mention anything about quality control checking, there wasn't none.
Hi de Hi campers I have just been reading the threads on this web site about new and old vans. I have been caravanning since 1969 before that tenting or camping as I called it with a moggie 1000 and trailer (home made) My first van had real glass windows no loo only a bucket toilet in a cubbyhole with a drop down wash basin, Gas lights [just think of the health & safety brigade] I moved on electric lights 12 volt had to keep charging the battery from the car but never had one that leaked then a few years in a static till I bought an all singing and dancing van a home from home tourer leaked like sieve the water heater element blew the fridge packed up the radio gave up and the trouble I had getting things put right under warranty talk about pass the buck I have never bought a British made van since, my vans have all been foreign since I cant find a dealer who will reduce a reasonable price of a 1/2/3 year old Island bed Adria cant find a Geist younger than 5/6 year old all other foreign vans seem to have door on offside Hobby Knaus etc, can get thousands off British vans but who wants to buy a colander I am not a cook ????

Ah yes, my parents had statics and I remember when we had no inside plumbing and had to walk to washroom to brush our teeth! I remember the gas lights and calor gas heater that we huddled round for warmth. Oh and the pull down bed. When we got a toilet plumbed in we thought it was luxury!!
Weve had 3 new Baileys and all suffered damp within 6 months, we changed to an Elddis crusader and this was exactly the same, mould in the drawers within 3 months! All I can say is that Bailey are better at honouring warranty work than Elddis are, we struggled to get work done under warranty on the Elddis Crusader.
When the work was completed on the vans they were like new again, and yes it is an hassle but it seems to be the norm nowadays with a new van. They are built on production lines very quickly! This is probably why they give long warranties on them.
We are back to a Bailey after owning an Elddis and I think they are all the same from what iv read on forums and spoke to dealers.
Hope it gets sorted for you and try not to let it get you down.
Hi all have spoken to the dealer again today and they just said the photos have gone to bailey ,we am going away next week and when we get back we need to phone to book it in for the repair!! I know they see this kind of thing all the time but I'm not sure at the moment that they realise the upset we are feeling at the moment

I know what you mean. Our Lexon has been back to Lunar 3 times for worktops moving away from the walls,a huge hole cut in the wrong place in the floor and now we've found another one and something else I can't remember. Also been back to dealer so many times I can't remember for leaks around windows, flu and both awning rails. The fridge, fire and awning light work when they feel like it, even though the fire was fixed 6 months ago it still can't be bothered when we really need it, the loo's had a new pump, the door screens broke and it's under 4 yrs old. When it comes back from having another job done it comes back with another dent in it. Every time we go away it limps back home with something or other. Many a time we've found screws rolling round the floor and when we've arrived somewhere and we can never find out where they come from. Anyway,I've decided it's jinked!

------------- a tent, folding camper and 6 caravans later ... June
Following this thread with interest as Bailey Pegasus near the top of our list as a new van purchase....
As a first-time purchaser looking to buy a van, it seems every brand is having issues with damp/leaks.... Really don't know what brand we should be looking at.....!
Smax22ts.
Just find the layout best suited to you, and then check out all the manufacturers, I think they all will pretty much equivalent layouts.
Then go online, do a little digging into any problems with that particular make and model.
I think most will have had issues, it's the scale of them that's the worry.
It seems bailey and swift group in particular are having a bad time of it, but for every problematic van there will be 10 without any issues.
It is disheartening when you spend all that money on a new van, you expect them to be problem free but unfortunately this isn't the case within the caravan build world! You will hear horror stories about all brands because its only negative that gets posted. At the end of the day the caravan has a warranty, any issues are repaired under the warranty and yes its a pain taking it to be sorted but that's what a warrantys for? Id rather buy a new van than second hand because if you buy a damp second hand van with no warranty on it can cost you a small fortune!
I think they are all the same, we just went back to a Bailey because we liked the product, we were very disappointed in the Explorer group who make the Elddis vans, they were not as good at honouring warranty work and everything was a hassle with them, however, with our Baileys they have been sorted out without any quibble.
Weve had this van since July and so far found nothing major wrong with it, in fact, im not gonna jinx it but its near on perfect! Our first Unicorn suffered over 40 faults within the the first 3 months and some were major faults!
I also think luck has a lot to do with it too? Whatever we buy we don't seem to have much of it!
I guess the unknown is if Swift's "SMART" build is any better at keeping the water out.
I've read on several threads that Elddis are bad at post-sale service, but that they may be more consistent in their initial build. Whereas Bailey are more likely to put it right and quicker in doing so.
The warranty is a big draw for us buying a new van, for this very reason!
If it really is luck-of-the-draw, perhaps we'll have to buy what we want and brace ourselves for the possibility of warranty-work!

Hi
Buy what you like the look of and be prepared for some faults on it. Weve got a few friends who have bought Baileys and had nothing at all go wrong with them! The vans are really nice and the alutech is warmer than the conventional construction because our Elddis had the ALde heating in and it wasn't as warm as the Unicorn. We also paid a fortune for the Elddis and tbh it wasn't a patch on the Baileys weve had! They argued everything that was needed on first service warranty and it really put me off them. Some say Bailey mass produce and get it wrong first time but they put it right and to me that's what counts.
After our last Unicorn I said id never have another Bailey!! Never say never! we went back to them because we hadn't realised how good their after service was un til we had dealt with Explorer group!!
Hope you get a good one whatever you buy and don't end up with a Friday afternoon van like we did!!
