It made us more aware of caravans and noticed the amount that were speeding and without the "anti snake device".
I quote a passage from your OP,now virtually every modern caravan has either an Alko or Winterhoff hitch fitted which incorporate a STABILISER they are not called ANTI-SNAKING devise and I would suggest your attention was more on vehicles passing than the road in front of you.
I have an old Bulldog stabiliser bar in my work shop and know where does it say Anti snaking device on it.Still I am not perfect and bow to your Knowledge

Crikey fella's, I can't believe how negative and rude most replies seem to be on here.

While I would agree there are some confusing comments in the Op's post, it's very easy to make a post and think you've put your point across, only for comments to be mis-read or interpreted differently to intended when read by others (I know, I write technical manuals).

I don't fully agree with the Op's comments (re speed, snaking etc)., however as mentioned, it has raised a question with at least one other member whose clearly new to towing, and probably being read by others too, who remain quiet in the sidings.

Granted they were old vans , and the Bulldog site I gave clearly says "anti snaking" .( By me saying " anti snaking" everybody knows what I am on about)....And yes my eyes were more on the scenery than the traffic, but then again where in the highway code does it state that being a passenger, you have to watch the road at all times and not look around?

Shouldn't really "unsettle stability" in a correctly matched & loaded van. They more cause some buffeting from wind & bow wave. Virtually all HGVs are limited to 56mph. There should be very few passing unless you are driving slowly under speed limit. Coaches are do have a higher maximum speed limit at 70mph.

When did coach speed limits get raised? I always thought that they were restricted to 100kph (62mph) on motorways and national speed limit dual carriageways

Don't know if or when it changed but according to GOV.uk it's 70.

Many motohomes can travel at 70mph legally, doesn't mean they should as high winds, heavy loading etc can all make a difference to them also, (plus having seen what happens to a motorhome shell in an accident I wouldn't want to be any where near one yet alone inside on if I was in an accident).

It's a valid point about travelling in coach built MH's People seem to think that they are as solid as a car or van, but in fact they are like eggshells and will disintegrate in a collision.

People would (rightly) be judged to be criminally irresponsible if they put their family in a caravan while it was being towed - but, in reality, there's not too much difference between being in a towed caravan, or sitting in the coach built area of a MH.

I've read this thread with interest, agreeing with some points ,dis-agreeing with others ,personally when towing our tin tent I NEVER top 60mph, after all I'm going on holiday and as such am chilled out, relaxed and in no particular hurry.

now that said as a driver with over 30 years experience both for leisure and work, I like, all you good people ,know SPEED KILL'S irrespective of the type of vehicle / unit you drive.

and ,fixing's, I also know that no matter how many time's it's repeated on forums or any other social media, people WILL continue to break the law and the speed limits, risking their own lives and those of other road user's.

all that we can do is to ensure that our own particular units are, fit for purpose, i.e. loaded correctly, 'van and tow car both, that 'van and tow-cars tyre pressures are correct, indeed that our tow car's are actually suitable to tow our unit ( I've seen quite a few mis-matched unit's on my travels) and just as importantly we keep our road speeds to the approved LEGAL limits.

then hopefully we can all sit back outside our caravans / MH's on site swigging a beer or 2 safe in the knowledge that we are good ,safe, legal ,happy campers.

if all this is patronising ,oh dear ,how ,sad never mind

no tin tent outings booked as yet ,just another cruise in Sept' booked so far

& after 20yrs they come up with the blindingly obvious? You are less likely to crash towing at 30mph than you are at 60mph. Stability is nothing to do with snaking which is an uncontrolled pendulum effect due to incorrect loading of car & caravan. Obvious faster you are going when it starts to snake the more likely you are to crash & it took them 20yrs to work that one out? Thats theorists for you.

If you want to score brownie points Ollie, you will have to do better than this.

Some replies to this post are a typical example of why people are posting less.

Ok so some of the wording/explanation was wrong but I would have thought experienced caravanners would have seen through that and got the jist without the rudeness!

You don't have to be rude to try and correct someone but it appears to be some peoples default nowadays on here

Interesting levels of pedantry going on ...

Something that seems not to have been covered ... in France, the towing limit is 81 mph for vehicles that comply with the max towing limit of 3,500kg.

And you see plenty of it.

Despite these speeds, and the thousands of caravan/trailer miles clocked up (especially in summer) ... in over forty years of continental holidays, I cannot recall ever seeing a crashed set up ... I'm sure it happens ... but that higher towing speed does not seem to result in massive problems.

I have, as much out of interest and testing, as anything else, towed out FC at 80 in France, and found it perfectly stable, if loaded and set up correctly ... and an FC has far fewer air flow problems than a van ... despite which, we have been overtaken by vans doing 80.

Speed is clearly a major factor ... the faster you go, the more likely you are to expose any inherent bad set up, be it load spread, tyres, level of 'train', airflow dynamic etc etc. A badly set up rig may not show any problems at 30 mph ... might show a little at 50 mhp and severe problems at 80 mhp.

Stabilisers will help ... but should never be used as a 'solve all', and should not be an excuse to waive all the various safety checks that have been mentioned.

What an obviously silly post. If snaking has nothing to do with speed, how come I've never seen a stationary caravan snaking. .... or are all stationary caravans perfectly loaded.

Snaking is caused by a number of contributory factors. Speed is undoubtedly one of them. Car and caravan tyres have their part to play too, even with a perfectly loaded caravan.

France is a good example actually. For a start they have always had lower caravan speed limits on certain downhill stretches of motorways, and in the last few years have lowered the speed limit for larger combinations. Wonder why they would take those measures if it was entirely safe to travel at 80mph?

How about Germany where cars have no motorway speed limit but caravans are limited to 50mph. Its quite fun towing on a 2 lane German autobahn at 50mph with a huge convoy of irate artics following because they are not allowed to overtake.

The more experienced you are the more likely you may have become blasé about the dangers of towing especially in relation to speed. This is because you may be relaxing more and finding that you can travel faster with no apparent problems...until it happens.

The purpose of the thread was to remind caravanners of the dangers of towing whether experienced or otherwise, and it has certainly done that.
