You're right to tske the motorways - over the Cat & Fiddle might not be much fun on your first trip.
It's an easy flat run (using your route) However, watch out for speed traps when you hit North Wales - they are absolutely notorious for them (despite the, then, Chief Constable's daughter being clocked well over the speed limit in Colwyn Bay by an undercover Sun reporter, with no action taken!)
When you get there, take a spin to Rhos on Sea, just down the coast. A lovely little spot (or, at least, it used to be) with a small harbour and (I think) dog friendly beach

The cat and fiddle runs from Buxton to Macclesfield - not much help coming from Sheffield. The Woodhead Pass I found to be a lovely road. The cat and fiddle isn't that bad - in summer at least.
