This topic is not about anyone's life choices. We all spend our money as we see fit.

The OP is just one of many (myself included) who is disgusted with the build of new caravans. If my experiences of new caravans are anything to go by, pretty well all are awful. If I buy a new car I expect to get many years trouble free motoring out of it, and depreciation has proved surprisingly low. It has many thousands of complex components, yet it works well. A simply-made caravan has faults galore. Should the OP put up with a new caravan that leaks? Should I have had to put up with a new caravan that leaks? Thankfully, at least I had a decent dealer who was able to make the caravan better than new within a reasonable timeframe.

that is why when we were looking to change our van we looked at what was on the market and dealers and then looked at the adria range and the only dealer in scotland selling them.has top marks as a dealer and a reputation to match and has the awards to match. van now over a year old and no issues

The OP refer to the quality of new caravans and not whether one should buy second hand etc.

Threads on here are for all contributors, not just buyers of new caravans. Its pointless comparing the tiny nichce market of caravans to cars, there is no comparison. Nothing will change as regards build quality and dealer service. Caravan service personel are not skilled vehicle technicians they are just semi skilled jack of all trades that do caravan servicing, body repairs, elecrics and gas. They work under pressure of too much work generally so you really will not get them to care, your dream is just their day job.

Look at caravan factory youtube vids. The nature of the assembly builds in potential qc issues. The talk is all of trading standards and taking dealers to court etc. All that will do if successful is put you back to square 1, it won't get you your dream caravan.

So maybe stop elevating caravans to what they are not? They are never going to be the house you live in, even the largest tourers are still pokey little boxes, boxes to sleep in at the end of the day. My take on caravanning is that if the weather is so bad that you have to spend days in it as well as nights then you may as well stay at home.

Buyers of products are entitled to receive value for money, that is the law of the land.

No one on here has to my mind provided a realistic explanation as to why caravans should be a special case and frankly Billy, you approach this from a niche personal position unrelated to people buying these new caravans.

Anyone who spends his money, be it £500 or £25000 on a caravan has the right to expect it to be of merchantable quality and if it is not he is entitled let to use the law to correct the position.

It appers to me the entire business of caravan manufactur and dealerships has got away with a lot over the years and maybe it is time these 'businesses' were brought to account.

Why the caravan magazines are not leading this charge I have no idea but I would suggest the people who are suffering here write a single letter to the chairman of the CC and C and CC requesting they take steps to support their members against these shoddy practices.

Meanwhile small claims court action is always an option even if some people on here do not feel it is appropriate.

If people exercised their right to sue the back-sides off companies that sell defective goods, then maybe things would improve.
Until that happens, they won't, and buyers of new caravans will continue to be unpaid QC testers for the industry.

One of the problems is the consumer.
We are demanding more and more equipment in our caravans yet we are not prepared to pay more for it.
We also want lighter caravans to pull with smaller lighter cars.
The result is the manufacturers have to use flimsy lightweight materials, cheaper materials and building the caravans as quickly as possible to minimise labour costs

Compressorman, you have my sympathy. If you check my post about wishing that I could buy a Japanese caravan, you will see what I mean. I spent 22 grand on a new Bailey, like yourself, because I had the means to do so and if I could, I would kick myself very hard in an area where it hurts very much, for being such a prat, when I could have got myself a very good foreign caravan, which would have been a couple of years old, but much better value and build quality. As long as I don't croak just yet, I am faced with keeping the Bailey for ten years to get my money's worth and I haven't tried the Alde heating yet. In fairness, the Dealers have been very good in helping to sort the problems out, but I wouldn't buy a Bailey again (unless they get taken over by the Germans and get their act together) - and I'm sure the caravan magazines will continue to give them glowing reviews. Incidentally, I'm surprised you haven't been accused of devaluing Coachman caravans by daring to be dissatisfied with the product - like I was for criticising Baileys. Come to think of it, caravan sites are places where you will always encounter the odd muppet.

Yes the customer is always right BUT if caravan maker A makes a van with a certain level of equipment, using top quality materials and meticulous build quality for say £35,000 and it weighs 2000Kg
Caravan maker B builds a caravan to the same level of equipment but cheaper lighter materials and faster production methods for £20,000 and 1200Kg

Caravan maker B would sell caravans, caravan maker A would probably go bust

If maker B didn't ensure that his caravans were sound, he damn well deserves to go bust.

The trouble is that all the British caravan manufacturers are as bad. In terms of cost, the design and build effort required to build a better van would cost very little extra. After a third new British caravan in a row that has leaked within a year, I think it will be our last caravan, unless we go back to another Trigano Silver.

If a well built quality damp proof caravan was offered to the British public at a higher price which is not unreasonable, but was minus some luxuries which can be options, I think word will get around and it will sell well. We would be willing to pay £2 - 3,000 extra if we knew the caravan was going to be a real quality damp proof product.

I think it should easily be possible in this day and age to produce a perfectly dry caravan well within existing prices. They are hardly what I would call cheap! If new caravans are leaking within a very short time after delivery, it must either be a design problem, which should be easy to rectify, or a question of quality control. If I were in a position to pay that kind of money, I would expect it to be completely leak-free for at least 10 years. In my opinion, no new caravan should leak, whatever the price.

Best Regards,
Colin
