Hi Partridge,
The question you ask is one that I been trying get across to the industry that the current offerings are flawed but do assist if a situation occurs for example if a snake/lateral sway occurs because the Hitch friction device is limited in its effectiveness then the next best thing is a device that can slow down the combination where it would be difficult for the driver to do and it can do this very well but with some draw backs - read my posting on "Caravan Stability" on here.
Regardless of what measures you use to control sway or jackknife towing a trailer is fraught with danger and this can be handled by observing speed limits whether imposed by the authorities or the vehicle manufacturers. It is bad enough to be caught out just with a car alone but a catastrophe with a trailer clung to the back. I have developed a device that prevents sway from starting at any speed I have been at up to 80 mph /130 kph on tracks but still keep to 90 kph on the highway.
Don't be put off by this just be careful.
John
