Ardria do make smaller caravans but they do not sell them in the UK in UK spec unless you could get one on special order? If you do want a smaller new caravan then the French built Caravelair that is now being imported by Marquis dealer chain are worth a look.

Thanks for this. We saw the small Caravelair at the NEC. It's certainly tempting, though it would mean paying new price rather than 2nd hand, which has been the budget plan! It felt quite good on seeing inside, though it appears to have quite a bit less storage space than some UK models only a tiny bit bigger.
We were nearly convinced by a Bailey 2nd hand small Orion, and still might be tempted, but after reading all those posts about standards of UK caravan build.... starting to go round in circles now!

We're hoping to view a smaller one in that range if we can arrange this - there's a dealer listed quite close to us. Do you find you get bashed head syndrome at all on the pop-up roof and the door? This appeared to be a phenomenon mentioned by some Eriba pop-up owners, which conveniently discourages us from buying one - which we probably can't afford anyway at their cult prices!

Our pop-up roof goes the full length of the caravan, so there is 6ft 8 headroom all through. The Eribas only seem to have the central part available

The door is low and initially causes banged heads but very soon you get used to it.

Eribas are stupidly expensive and Silvers are not cheap, but have a look at Rapido pop ups on the 2nd hand market.

Rapido, the original makers of the pop up, sold their moulds and equipment to Trigano who now call it Silver

And do you ever have problems with water getting in round the corners of the pop-up box?

I think that you need to consider when and where you are going to use your caravan. For example we took our great big new 1900kg caravan abroad this summer and really it was a waste of time, the caravan was great, the weather was great, the whole holiday was great but we spent all of out time outside just used the van to sleep in. On the other hand we use it all year round and really appreciate a nice warm cosy van with all facilities on hand.

What I trying to say is that a freedom caravan might be great in the South of France in July, not so great if you want to go skiing in February.

All this reiteration of seemingly inevitable and expensive damp problems is almost beginning to make us half wonder whether going on with the tent into our 70's might be better after all!

Unfortunately, caravans whether of traditional build or any of the new construction methods, still have damp issues. The UK industry is very good with showroom appeal, but not so good on build quality, largely due to employees being on piecework, so that speed rather than quality is the driver during assembly. This is why keeping your head during the excitement of your purchase is essential.

That's certainly a valuable reminder!
Currently looking at Rapido pop tops. Hopefully a better build?

We had a Silver for 5 years. Never got a bashed head on the roof, the raised roof covers a larger area than the floor standing area unlike Eribas. However you do have to watch the door. I used to put my hand on the top of the door frame as I went out.

The reason they are expensive is that they are well made rather than cult prices. They are far lighter, and they don't leak. We have also had 3 British caravans, all leaked within their first year from new, and don't assume that once the leak is cured that is it. Our fist van had extensive repairs after one year yet was a complete write off after a further 3 years.

Thought about a trailer tent?Dandy are a superior make with brilliant after sales service, big bonus is that they can be put away wet.Caravans ? Find the model you like AND then before parting with any cash get a competent mobile engineer to give it the "once over", wish i had taken my own advice..Geist are a superior make (made by German company LMC)with a range of interior options

Thanks for this.
We're not currently inclined towards trailer tents, but beginning to wonder seriously about a folding caravan.

And thank you for the comment on the engineer check first, yes, that's firmly on the agenda.

We purchased our first caravan from the caravan company Leicester branch and found them great.

Love our current Swift which came from Lowdham caravans (Notts) who we have found to be very helpful.

Various people have mentioned Adria. I'm only finding quite big Adria caravans so far, and we're keen to find something fairly compact, though maybe not as small as a Freedom. And it must have a loo, preferably cassette type!
Has anyone experience of the Trigano Silver pop-up range?
(Maybe I should start a new thread for that question....)

Adria do some small models. For example Adria action.

I have. Owned caravans since 1969 some with real glass windows but for the last 15 years I have always bought foriegn vans as I got fed up with faulty British vans from electrics to water ingress.                                 The best vans I have owned are a LMC/Geist/ Adria present Adria adora 1700kgs. But they make smaller vans some under 1000kgs.
LMC/Geist belong to Hobby group now.
I would have bought a new Geist van last year but could not find any brand new models in UK only motor homes may be Hobby have dropped the vans. Good luck in your seach I am sure you will find a van you will fall. In love with.
