I've been watching to see how Rob gets on. Keep us all posted. I have really had to adapt my awning for winter storms due to being on a windy site. It became a bore taking it down and the site (a field) became wet so could not move the van into storage nor even get car to and from caravan. Arranged with farmer to leave both in situ when I am not there. However I had to create an internal structure of > 2 metre long 2 X 2 posts in a triangle structure to support the awning's own upright poles and prevent them blowing inwards. Plus loads of bubblewrap for the insulation. I can maintain 20 -
25 degrees c above outside temperature within awning on a small fan heater and a dehumidifier, insulating with 200 metres of 1 metre wide bubble wrap (cost about £32). Also adapted poles from a porch awning I do not use, plus bought some snow support poles. Awning so far has survived but I would advise you choose a non-windy site and one that does not get under water! Have also invested in plastic walk-way (green squares) to go on the grass to avoid me and my dogs traipsing mud in and out of the awning and heated dog beds for the dogs (as it's cold at ground level).

Hi... myself and my family are in a similar position .. following a breakup from a previous relationship, I am being forced to sell our family home. So we are using the opportunity to start a new life. We are relocating to Wales we are hoping to find a caravan once we are in Wales but currently have a converted horse lorry which has living quarters... the problem or worry that I have is that 1 will any campsites take a converted horse lorry then a caravan once I have one and the 2nd is I am relocating with 3 children and with no fixed address or idea of where we are going to end up is keeping up with school, as for the meantime we will have to home educate them. Any advice welcome, but please no bad comments as this is a difficult time as it is. TIA.

Kezzahug - big challenges ahead. Lots of forums on permanent living in a touring caravan come down to 2 key points legally. 1. You need to move every 28 days (21 days if using CL sites) 2. You cannot stay permanently in a caravan on one site. However you can get a seasonal pitch, and then not move the caravan, but you have to move yourselves out of it every 21 days for 2 days (or every 28 consecutive days for 2 days - depends on site rules too) then you can go back in again! In my case I am using a caravan term times, but return home for holidays, half term etc, so am not in it longer than 28 days consecutively, though I am using it 8 months of the year (pending buying a pied a terre locally which is the eventuual aim). However I may have to change sites, as the only reason I could keep the caravan on the current site in winter was because it could not be moved (field too soft) without churning up the whole site. Some non-club sites do allow caravans to stay permanently, but you yourself cannot live in it permanently, at least not legally. So the answer really is simply to get a second hand caravan (horsebox will NOT be accepted on Club sites!) then swap between two or three CL sites every 21 days which does mean idenifying which ones are 'open all year' as many close inn winter. Expect to pay £10-15 per night includinng EHU. And be sure you can get on and off pitches in the winter sludge! Security is an issue too, so the site should be reasonably secure and off the beaten track.

Hi, it really all depends on where you intend on staying. UK difficult but if Europe and willing to wildcamp very easy or stay over 90 days on campsite and get cheap rates and mainly good weather.

Hi Rob,
I hope things going well.
I'm in the same situation now as you were a few years ago (apart from the fact I don't have a caravan yet but I'm really keen on getting one in the upcoming weeks).
I'm wondering how you get on with living in a caravan full time, if you still doing it.
Would you have any advice how to start. I got in touch with a few nearby sites (I'm at East Midlands) with no luck yet. :(
Regards
Peter

Hi Peter, if you read back all through this thread you will find that Robs caravan was stolen some time back. He was only away from it one night and he had several security devices on it. Sadly that's a risk you take. If it's your home, what do you do then?

Colin
