That’s not really what I meant Bob. All that & trackers do is help get the caravan back after it has been nicked. It helps the insurance company rather than owner who does not want it back after the thieves have had it anyway.
Registering caravans like cars would make them a less attractive proposition to steal in the first place.
Cars are stolen for many different reasons. For getaway from thefts mostly. Some high end cars will be stolen by organised crime for export. A few will be cloned but it is unlikely that they can be used like that for the 10 or more yrs life of the car.
Caravans mostly are stolen to be used & can be easily used for the rest of their lives. 20yrs or more. There are plenty of older caravans around I bet bought & sold privately where their owners have no inkling they have a stolen caravan. First time buyers of older caravans have probably never heard of Cris which is entirely optional. Plenty of imported caravans are never Cris reg.
Fact remains is this. If a crook steals a car he cannot easily & permanently use that car. If he rings it & sells it on to an unsuspecting buyer then sooner or later that buyer will know he has bought a stolen car & lose his money & car.
If a crook steals a caravan then he can tow it well out of the area & use that caravan straight away no ringing, cloning or other criminal knowledge required. A few yrs later he can sell it on ebay to a buyer who knows nothing about Cris & provided that or subsequent buyers do not try to update details with Cris then that caravan will go the end of it’s life 20yrs or more undetected.
New caravans can cost more than a new car required to tow them so they need to be registered/MOTed/insured by the DVLA same as cars.
I agree with registering caravans but I think it should be voluntary...we have far too many expenses, rules and regulations governing vehicular traffic as it is and the only winners are the government.

IIt’s voluntary to register caravans at the moment. I doubt anything will change. Caravan sales are on the increase. Probably new buyers do not realise just how stealable late model large caravans are but they find out when their caravan has gone. Thefts will increase but caravans will remain a niche market & I doubt the will exists to make them more difficult to steal anyway.
The caravan thieves will continue to enjoy easy pickings from stolen caravans that can easily stay stolen & used by those that did not pay for them. If police do not have the resources to attend burgularies I doubt they will have much interest in caravan theft. Best let the insurance deal with it after the event.
Postcodes on the roof are just advertising your house is empty ,but what about large stick on car reg decals on the roof .would work I suppose till everyone did it .

Your house won't be empty if your caravan has been nicked

but it will be if scumbags are perched on bridges reading them as you pass
Podtcode will only pinpoint your house if you add the house number. Usually about 15 properties to each postcode.

It’s a waste of effort. Unless caravan is recovered soon after being stolen you are not going to want it back anyway. Any owner fitted security over & above insurance company requirements benefits insurer not owner.
If caravan is eventually recovered then it is property of insurer. The owner will have been paid out so will cease to have any interest. I think owners personalise caravan theft too much. Theres little the police can do at the time. Even if they can stop thief while actually towing the caravan he will have a “story” ready with a paper receipt showing he has bought the caravan & so on.
It’s very difficult to prove theft even if anybody is found in possession of a stolen caravan. It just goes back to the good sense of having Dvla registration & numberplates same as cars for caravans that cost more than many cars.

Someone told me recently, that when their caravan was stolen, it was found in a street locally, by police, with a false number plate.
Said theives park the caravan for a day to see whether it has a tracker.
I've heard similar stories about stolen cars. Well worth having a look around the local area. Good luck, fingers crossed you get sorted

I put the reg of the tow vehicle on the roof of my caravan the day I bought it, they even blanked it out on google earth lol
Somebody thought about gps tracker in caravan? I have one for my hunting dog in his collar, it’s useful when there is risk he runs and get lost. Maybe I can hide the gps tracker with charging from battery somewhere in the caravan whilst away?
