Our present van is 7'-5" wide. our previous Coachman was 7'-1" wide and, to be honest, from a users point of view there felt little difference.
When the 8 foot wide ones started to come onto the market, I wrote in the C.C. mag that I could not see the point of these wide vans, and that 7'-1" wide was ample for anyone. I made the point of narrow lanes in the UK (where most club sites are as well as the private ones), and that two 8 foot wide vans passing each other would need an extra road width of 22 inches.
The response was hostile - no appreciation of logic, just an avalanche of near abusive comments. So if the 8 footers get their bodywork scraped, owners might ponder the sense in these wide vans.

I am just advising my experience and it’s actually not as scary as some may think. I am no HGV driver but if your diligent and carful its all posible. I would not go back to 7ft 6 over our 8ft van and that’s from actual experience. Each to there own and of course 3 inches over either side is not massive so I say no scare mongering is required, no issue for me and the extra space we gain as a family. French roads in the south of France on the wrong side of the road are no breeze but can happen ....... Cornwall or Scotland are not different and I have towed there. So if anyone is considering it all I would say is take your time and it’s not as if an issue as you may think.
i think it depends on what kind of caravaning you do..
if all you do is take the easy route to a site of choice a bit wider wont be too much of a problem..
i do a lot of rural touring i would not want a wider or longer van.. a few inches ether side may not sound much but it could be the difference between major damage and no damage.. even half an inch could make that difference.. :)
This takes me back to my earliest days of bus driving. Most buses in the 1960s and early 1970s were 7'6 wide, so when they started building buses 8' wide they fitted them with white steering wheels so that the drivers knew. Not long after that they started building them at 8 foot 2 and a half. Not sure what the modern ones are as I don't drive them.

Not sure where you get 22 inches as the caravan is only 6" wider so 2 x 6 is 12". An 8' wide caravan is 3" wider on the sides so not a great deal to worry about. We have never had an issue with filling up the vehicle in either France or Spain.
This is what he actually referred to not existing caravans.

The pedantry started when you questioned the OP's reasoning and asked how he arrived at his conclusion, when answered you appear to be unable to accept your mistake without being critical and accusing me of being pedantic!
The pot calling the kettle black springs to mind.

The main reason for my post was just to say..... we are really happy with the extra space and that at first I was nervous of the extra width. When I first hitched on it was in my head I think but after a little time to settle I am quite happy with it.
There will I am sure be others with the same though when purchasing.
Our adria is 6 inches wider than our last bailey and that being 3 inches either side does have to be considered. However we have been to the south of France and back now and most of it not missing heart beats 😉
Some road works are a little thin and a couple of lanes we entered I took a deep breath but it’s also about checking where you are going and being cautious where required, which you should also do at 7ft 6.
Each to there own as I say but we took the plung and our 8ft adria Thames is spot on.
I've had a 8 ft wide caravan for 9 years, I've had no problems with the extra width, it's a bit like driving a automatic car then going back to a manual gear change, if we went back to a 7.3 Mtr van I would really miss the extra room, if you don't have the coincidence to have one then don't, but arguments like getting through a farm gate are a bit weak, if a farmer can get a huge tractor through then a caravan is no problem
Thank you Bnmuk and Lank01 I am with you. I think it is just a matter of getting used to it! I dont think I would go down to the Lizard and tow around those narrow lanes.
