Sat Nav is a good tool.  The reliability obviously depends on the model you have.  Mine has not let me down......yet!!

Common sence has to be applied.  If you don't like the look of somewhere do not turn down there!

Just carry on and the machine will recalculate in seconds.

I agree though, you do get lazy and forget how to navigate yourself.  Last october we used it for the 1st time, puching in post codes for attractions and findin gour way back to the campsite.  We were down there a week and I still didn't have much of an idea where we were.

We relied on our sat nav but it got us one day in France. On the way following sat nav to the next site it took us down a country lane not to bad, it is when it told us to take the ferry and round the next corner the road went down a slip way OK we will take the ferry whats that sign say 2mtr height restiction and then we look across at the ferry they were right it had a small bridge going acroos the boat no way would we get on. Had to back up about 50mtr open a gate into a field and turne round Oh the cars behind us had to do the same so we could get out.

But we still use sat but check the Map as well

had the same problem in France, paid £140 quid for the software ti use it in France and it was worse than usingit in the UK, in fact i think if we had set it on the ferry it would of sent us of the wrong end into the water.

Come to think about it we got starnge dierection's in Rouen on the way down and on the way back Followed sign posts in the end But it did give a very good short cut from the site to Calais supermarket

I paid £69 for the French maps from Tom Tom on the whole not bad Always got us to centre of Towns and shows car parks. I think if you are just using the car they are fine just have to be a bit more aware with the caravan

We got sat Nav for my Pocket PC-the AA's Navigator 2006.

Used it to get to West Bay in Dorset (using the post code) and ended up being directed to a very tiny place called Eype. We ended up facing down a long narrow hill, thought this isn't right and managed to reverse (up hill) into a field and out again.

When we got to West Bay and mentioned it at the reception they said....oh did it send you to Eype? It does that all the time!!

Doesn't take a lot of brains to mention this when booking does it?!!

I think I'll stick with my 'O.S.' maps and 'clicking on' to the appropriate county council or highways agency 'road works' advice line, before I leave... It works for me...

I love my sat nav, my husband bought me a Tom Tom as whenever I went further afield than my local area I always got lost, he thought the expense of a reliable sat nav would pay dividends as he would save on the extra petrol he always had to replace during one of my 'marvelous mystery' excursions!!!

If I don't like the look of a road, then I'll carry on and the Tom Tom will quickly give an alternative route.

We have used it all year with the caravan and haven't had any problems, in fact without it I think we would have struggled to find some of the sites we have used. Having our little machine has saved loads of silly arguements as I'm hopeless at map reading, just need a machine to put the awning up now then we would not only have a very peaceful journey but also set up at the start of our holidays!!

I do'nt want to sound a fuddy duddy but when I hear people say " I hope another car dosnt come in front of me cos i cannt reverse" it makes me laugh a bit because they are taking a huge vehicle on the road that they cannot manouvre.Donnt get me wrong I know everyone has to learn and that it can be a horrible thing if someone is tooting their horn at you and you just sit there saying basically ,"sorry mate I dont now how to drive it that way yet.But you take this on the road. Seriously.what WOULD you do if an emergency vehicle came the other way.

I think people should have at least a basic idea as to how to reverse a van.

Phew thats off my chest

Sorry if I have upset anybody and like i said I DO realise we all have to learn sometime.

Anyway what lovely weather we are having.

but not everyone can reverse without a caravan, let alone with. Whilst towing the van last year we met a mature lady (well, old then) one sunny morning on a single track road near St Agnes in Cornwall. She had to reverse about 10 yards to a grassy area where we could then pass, only took her 10 minutes!! The wife had to stop me from getting out and offering to reverse her MICRA for her. Bloody hilarious!

My wife would have encouraged me to go and offer some help.
