I have a tomtom 520, and rather than just set it to go to the camp site, I set up a trip plan. That way I can put in intermediate destinations to force it to take the route I want to take and have nice clear directions to follow. You often need to follow the camp sites own directions at the end to avoid the nasty little lanes.
I find setting it to limited speed of 55mph makes it choose reasonable routes and give accurate journey times.
As Surfer1 and maybe others say , please set your satnav to HGV , this will avoid narrow roads , low bridges , unsuitable villages and give you a more realistic journey time . My expensive old Garmin bikers satnav does all this and it`s software is no better than el cheapo satnavs .
Tom Tom has the HGV feature as standard just the same as cheapies from Halfords etc . Remember HGV are as short as a large 4x4 right up to 30 metres as standard . Our outfits are 10 metres to 20 metres ,same parameters if we stop and think , why would anyone want a specific caravan satnav ? New reg`s mean we can be as wide as a HGV too .
we have the snooper ventura S6000 thats the 7 inch screen without the tv option as we didnt need the tv option and you can put in motorhome as well as car and it tells you when high winds are a hazard as well as routing us around low bridges and steep inclines and narrow roads, it is expensive and the speed camera's are a bit more expensive that tom tom but the traffic updates are free where as tom tom charges you for them.
I really love the big screen and the mapping is good along with eu mapping, we havent had it for a month yet but find it a bit of a pain that you cannot add your own POI's but if you give them to snooper they will add them but there are a lot of POI's on it already with all the campsites, the CC and the CCC sites and the asci camp sites which are excellent for us as we own a motorhome and would be good for a caravanner as well.

Just bought a Garmin Nuvi 1300 in the Halfords "up to 50% off" sale.
In the points of interest bit it lists caravan and camping sites in the area you're currently in.
Can be useful if you're looking for an overnight stop and don't know where to go.

Hi, I have been reading some good reviews on the Garmin 1340 & wondered what the difference is ? They are priced pretty much the same.
I think you would need to go along to Halfords and make the comparisons there. I'm very happy with my new Garmin. Loads of features built in with a nice clear screen and really easy operation.
We have had a Tom Tom for 5 years now and it has never let us down in Uk or Europe. We keep the maps up to date every 3 months we get new maps from Tom Tom for about £37 a year. With travelling with the caravan we keep to setting Motorways or Slow Vehicle.
------------- Kia Sorento XS towing Elddis Crusader Storm.
Interestingly the TomTom Go7000 is not mentioned on the TomTom website as this version is only available for Trucks hence the high price!
None of the TomTom versions for use with a car & caravan have a 'feature' that specifies routes for cars with caravans, nor will they allow you to specify the size of your outfit, so unless you check your route before you go you might get stuck!
Yes it has happened to me but now I also check with Google Earth.
Sadly because TomTom offers this expensive Truck version they will not offer a different model for cars & caravans as it would have to be much cheaper and then the Haulage Industry would not buy the model specifically designed for them.
What’s all the problem, I have been using ordinary GPS units for many years, on a daily bases with work and on a personal one including Europe As long as you do not select shortest or quickest, but select preferences for motorways and the likes, I have never had a problem either with or without the caravan.
In the end you are the logical thinking human being and you have the final decision. If it say’s turn right and it is an un surfaced track, or there is grass growing in the middle, are you that stupid to take that turn, or the next few miles or so, as back on track will try and put you back on its original plotted route?
hi all anybody use there phone i have a n8 nokia and a samsung galaxy the maps on them are brilliant and you can up date them easy on your own pc thing is with sat nav it might take you round the houses but more often then not they will get you there or very near
Ours is the cheapest version going, google maps and pen and paper, plus me reading a map!! Never had a satnav yet and if we see a problem up ahead we get off the motorway and try another route.

i have used a tom tom in my car for many years but put a van on the back and its a different story.I recently purchased after a lot of research a snooper sat nav as i was going to france with my van for the first time and was dreading the trip with a tom tom.The snooper is not the cheapest but it didnt put a foot wrong and took me straight to the sites(with overnight stays) with no hassle at all and i also put the tom tom up with the same points which tried to take me through small villages and windy roads while the snooper stayed on the main roads and was only 10 minutes behind the tom tom.like i said before the snooper was not cheap but we found it well worth the investment and it also comes pre loaded with all campsites ready built in so you just type in the name of your site and where it is and bingo your on your way

We have one too and would agree with all said above. Not cheap but worth it. Shame they don't have lane guidance and speed limits though.
