Been caravanning over forty years and always felt that winter covers were a bad idea. We always leave a dehumidifier on a timer in the van during winter. Put covers over fridge vents to restrict the amount of fresh air coming in. Dehumidifier draining via tube to shower tray outlet. Produces a trickle of water for about a week then virtually nothing.
Last winter I'd given the (2003 Abbey 418 GTS Vogue) van a good clean and polish with Auto-Glym. Looked like new again and I didn't fancy the idea of seeing it covered in green moss and black streaks come spring. Invested in a breathable cover from Towsure at £90. Have to admit, changed my mind about the disadvantages. Caravan appeared from under in pristine condition, just as before the cover went on. Pro's and Con's. It does the job. I can still get in the van if necessary, big zip each end allows access to door. Bit of a bugger to put it on, definitely need two and a set of steps. There was some chafing to the inner cover where the front 'eyebrow' rain channel caught it despite my taping sponges to each end. Side 'grp' panel of van has a small patch of darker finish which I hope will polish out. May be caused by cover flapping in wind or maybe it was there before and I never noticed.
There's a letter in latest Caravan Club magazine from a guy who put one on his van and it's caused diabolical mildew and damp. Admittedly he was aware of a slight water ingress problem but not to cause any major problem previously.
I'm a fan of the winter cover, but advise to have a dehumidifier running as well. I park in the front area of the house so it's always on mains electric.
