imho no amount of service will stop the panels cracking if they are going to crack anyway.it just means they are discovered sooner rather than later.imagine you are leaving the service area and go over a bump in the road, the panel could crack then and you would not know until the next service check.mine has minor cracking at the rear hoping its only gel coat.been like that since we got it and has had three damp checks plus the ones i do myself. its purely a stress factor and poor fitting of the panel that gives rise to cracking on panels.plastic will do all you want it too and last forever unless you push it too far and stress it.

RRDKL i am sorry to hear about your problem i would have thought baileys should really fix your van the fault is not due to not being serviced as michael says it can happen any time. but baileys do have a good get out clause ,and the terms and conditions of the guarantee  mean they are well within their rights to refuse to do a complete repair . i think i would accept the offer of a new panel though and cross the bridge of getting it fitted later ,i must admit i am getting a bit paranoid with the problem of cracked panels i check mine about once a week now ,i hope you do manage to get it fixed soon , all the best

After owning an old Bailey caravan and semi retirement from being self employed I decided to treat myself to a new caravan and chose another Bailey.
On the 20-4-07 I purchased a new Senator Virginia from a large recognised dealer and was pleased to know that I had piece of mind knowing the caravan was guarranteed against damp as long as I followed the service requirements. This was of particular piece of mind because of health problems that needed a damp free environment.
I followed the conditions of service and the second service  (Bailey approved) I was told that the caravan was showing 45% Damp and it was a problem with the back panel having a crack but I wasnt to worry as Bailey knew of the fault and would remedy the repair under guarrantee. I have noted from comments left on caravan blogs on the internet and it seems that this problem with the panels were not so common on double wheel base caravans and had I been aware of this I would have purchased a double wheel base Bailey.  I discussed the situation with the dealer who sold me the caravan. He informed me that the caravan should go back to Baileys for repair. Baileys cleared that the service centre were capable to do the repair and that the caravan would be completely dried out and a new panel fitted. After two months  I was told to collect the repaired caravan. This was welcome as we have not been able to go on our planned holiday due to the repair being done. I felt I needed confirmation that the caravan was now dry so the day after I collected the caravan I instructed an idependant damp survey and to my horror the caravan was still reading 45% damp and the engineer has confirmed that it woud take over 6 months to dry out fully and that the caravan should have been dried out fully before any repairs had been caried out (I have printed report) had this been the case I would have been happy but feel uncomfortable knowing that the damp has been sealed in instead of being dried out properly.
We have not been able to use our caravan this season. I have discussed this with the director of the company that sold me the caravan who informed me that he did not think he was responsible for the way we have been treated and that our case is with Bailey caravans. The caravan has been used three times since ownership.
Yesterday I had a phone call from the repairers who said that they were anoyed that I questioned their work was not done to a suitable standard an that they could not dry the caravan properly as Baileys only paid them for 12 Hours to do the job.
After this call I phoned Bailey only to be told that what the service centre said was correct. I am very anoyed that all this has happened and No one seems to know who is responsible. I have had to instruct a solicitor and will let everyone be aware of outcome and hope that other people are not treated the same as I have been.
If anyone can give any advice please Ime gratefull. I followed all the requirements reagarding servicing and still no peace of mind.

After reading about Burstner calling in the faulty models I say well done to Burstner for coming clean and what a shame Bailey do not have the decency to do the same. As they were well aware of these sub standard panels being used on the production line.

I have just heard Bailey have invested £1 million pounds on a new laminating system What a shame they didnt invest a couple of hundred pounds in the customer service department on training on how to look after existing customers. Be aware before purchasing a Bailey and read these posts. Dont let them get you caravaners down it is still the best way to holiday and there are some good caravan manufactures out there but I have learnt it is worth while in the long run to pay a little extra for initial purchase rather than having a complete headache trying to get a useful caravan even if it is only a year or two old

Thanks Michael I have tried. Baileys are just not interested I have tried to get the caravan magazine to do a story on these panels and what Baileys are doing about it but the magazine wont publish individual cases. Ive got nothing to hide Ive kept my side of the contract with the servicing.

A quick update today (Friday) had a phone call from Caravan Council and they say that the new panel on our Bailey Senator Virginia was fitted in 2 Days 1day for drying the next for fitting. Ime no DIYer but now our solicitor is dealing with it and I must say its a weight of my mind. By the way I forgot to mention The damp readings were 40% befor the repair and 45% after.

Anyone with a Bailey that is in the so called guarrantee period should get it checked out with a damp meter. If you dont get anywhere with finding a solution with Baileys check your house insurance as I did and what a relief that someone else will have the headache as I am fully covered for legal expences. Will let you all know what happens

Ian1954,

This whole thing stinks, I have been to the Trading Standards and it seems there is no one openly saying there was a problem yet if you read this post -

http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/chatter/display_topic_threads.asp?ForumID=8&TopicID=110397&SearchPagePosition=1&search=baileys++&searchMode=allwords&searchIn=Topic&forum=8&searchSort=dateDESC&ReturnPage=Search

You will see a post from Janx which quotes out of a letter from Bailey's employee that they have a know problem.

Like you I shall keep pursuing this till I get a satisfactory answer to why we as consumers have none of the rights that the sales of goods act is surpose to give under the 'fit for purpose' clause.

Hope you get your case sorted it is really bad that the NCC has taken Baileys side in your case since it would seem to me that they of all people should show they are there to maintain and protect a high standard not there as a means of duping us into believing they have high standards when they do not.

Please keep me posted

You are worrying unnecessarily , if and only if your van develops a crack and most of the vans affected were 2004 - 2005 vans it will be repaired under warranty providing you have it serviced with out fail at the correct time . The OP who started this post did not bother to get his/ her van serviced and unfortunately because there van developed a crack there was chance of a warranty claim

Have it serviced every year by your local Bailey dealer mzzy, our last service cost around £130 (I think). I used to use a brilliant moblie man who is really superb, but he advised me to have it done at the dealers. He'll come & put anything on it or in it for me but servicing has to be done to keep the warranty. know I've got 6 years of factory over as long as I play by the rules. Your new van won't be due a service yet being a 2009 so if I were you, I'd find out when it's due & have it done. You've nothing to worry about as long as you make sure they stamp the service book..

Neil and Lena!

My Caravan was serviced by a Bailey service centre and at the right time It doesnt stand for anything.

Since my last update still no letter from Baileys or Supplier and still cant use our caravan. Next time I speak to my solicitor I am going to ask if I can name the director of the supplier (who has just taken over a large caravan sales centre) the name of the person at the council CC  on this and other forums without any legal problems. Thanks for all your comments.
