What you have to bear in mind, though, is some lowlife who is going around stealing these sort of things will probably be far too idle to want to remove permanent marker before selling on. Somtimes the simple things are the most effective.
We have never had anything stolen in nearly 10 years of camping and caravanning. However, when I was camping with my parents around 30 years ago, I do remember that they had a water container pinched, so these things are not new just rare.
Like Michaels idea's for the pump lock, particularly the second option. Only problem is I cannot work out how the pump fits in. Have you got any photos of the finished job that you can post on here? I will be making one in stainless as soon as I have worked it out!

It's the water pump pipe that fits in the clamp slot .
Thanks for the prompt reply, I thought it was designed to accept the plug ("square plastic lump") that fits into the socket in the caravan. I will have one of these made before the weekend, but I think I will carefully weld it up (without melting the pipe) and then anybody will have to cut the pipe and electrics if they want to borrow it.

once made open it up enough to get the pipe in and slide it onto the housing of the pump and then clamp onto the housing with the vice without doing damage to the plastic.
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
If you scratch your details on the top of the barrel (with a screwdriver blade but not too deep) then mark with a permanent marker, the marker is harder to rub out. Another way is to take your items to a windscreen fitters and get your details sandblasted (like the windows) into the plastic. then highlight with marker, it will never come off. and is very neat
