I think that some campsites made big losses last year and the year before because of the awful weather and they also had a lot of no-shows to contend with. They have had to raise their prices more this year to make up for some of these losses also costs of fuel etc have increased quite a lot over the last year which they have to pass on. Hopefully if we get a good summer and the campsites do well this year the price increases will not be so steep next year.

The reason for increased prices in the school holidays is the result of supply and demand I'm afraid. As demand increases price has to increase if supply remains fixed. Thus with a fixed number of pitches an increase in demand will lead to an increase in price.

Someone mentioned the reduction of VAt from 17.5% down to 15% should have seen a reduction in charges. Has anyone seen the reduction in site fees? I haven't!

If you look at the price panel in the current CC directory and compare that with the current price given on their website the reduction is there for all to see.

Thanks for pointing that out Ray, that only applies to bookings made from that tarriff, I booked our pitches for this summer prior to the reduction in VAT & I'm wondering if any other members have had the reduction passed on, we haven't.

With the CC club, you pay when you arrive, and also the bookings for this summer were released in December after the VAT adjustment, so do I assume you are talking about a non CC booking.

£70 a night....well I suppose someone must pay it but count me out.  Are the showers made of marble and with gold plated taps???

We usually stick with C&CC sites as they do a family deal price and the facilities are good.

If you want swimming pools, clubs, bars, etc. then expect to pay the price.  I take the view that these facilities are usually available anyway if I want to travel to them (i.e. local swimming baths, pubs, restaurants etc.) so we prefer a quiet site with good basic facilities ... but even with the family deal price this year, it's gone up a bump.  (Costing us £23.50 a night, high season, school holidays with EHU).

What some are charging during school holidays is a rip off.  It's not just campsites, same can be said about B&B, hotels, foreign holidays, everything really.   If it gets much worse, lots of people with children will just be priced out.  Then those without kids won't be subsiding prices for those that use these places the in low/mid season.

I expect to pay more during school holidays but 4 times the low season price?  (This is not uncommon).

I am just back from dropping off my wife and her friends for a girls weekend break in a static at seton sands at edinburgh, I have to pick them up tomorrow, so when i was there i had the thought that i may pick up my caravan from storage and stay the night to save the journey tomorrow and my daughter would like a night away and some quality time with her dad, well i went to the reception to ask the availability and price, 3 pitches left and it would cost £54 for the night i was told.
I did not even give her a answer, turned round and walked out

I stayed at the same site 2 weeks ago for 3 nights fri to mon it only cost £28 in total for the pitch (this is a cc site)

It may as well be the edinburgh holidays but COME ON, what ever the supply and demand and extra staff and all the rest is this is a excessive price
(defend that one)

According to the site search on here, Seton Sands is a Haven site. I know that heavily commercialised sites like these really hike their prices up once they get near to capacity. I guess some people will pay that amount for a last minute break.

Caravan Club sites have a set price according to season and this will not rise even if you are lucky enough to find a pitch a late notice.

Seton Sands is a Haven site.

I have seen Haven advertising in the CC site book, maybe members get a discount?

But that does not make it a CC site.

does that make it all rite if you can get a discount? it's still is a rip off that they charge so much.
Sites taking advantage

What about new caravaners that have just starting out do they have to suffer with paying more if they are not in a club yet.
The price may put them off sites so sites lose money in the long run

No, I would not contemplate paying anything like that, even if I was getting a discount. I just wanted to point out that this site actually has nothing to do with the Caravan Club as far as setting charges etc.

New caravanners can join the CC or C&CC immediately, if you go to one of their sites you can join right there and then. They do not need to pay these high prices, they can choose not to use these expensive sites. If they do a little research they will soon discover that there are plenty of sites that are reasonably priced.

If sites lose out because they tried to push prices too high they will either reduce the prices or go out of business.

It is only a rip-off if you let it be.

We are not long back from 2 months away, using all CC sites, we averaged under £15 per night, which we thought was very reasonable for the standard of the sites. We could have done it for under £10 per night by using CLs if we needed to reduce costs.

I don't entirely agree with that. The children are off school, so they are on holiday, they don't actually NEED to go away from home to have a holiday.

You could stay at home and do days out, activities, have quality time together. I suspect it is parents who more need the holiday!

Between 1988 and 1998 we only went away, as a family , on one holiday. We could not afford to as we were building a house. As far as i can see our children have not suffered from not going away.

The fact that going away in the school holidays invariably costs more is something all of us with children have experienced. It doesn't last for ever, soon they will be all grown up and will not want to go anywhere with you.

Meantime, vote with your feet as they say, and if you think a site is too expensive, do not go there. There are plenty of alternatives.

SORRY JENNIFERNN BUT KIDS NEED A HOLIDAY TO THEY WORK HARD AT SCHOOL ALL YEAR. YOU CAN HAVE DAYS AWAY BUT WHAT IS THE POINT IN HAVING A CARAVAN THEN

You are missing the point

I know prices will go up at school holiday times (to high this year from previous years. THE MAIN POINT), but sites could be missing the chance to get new business, with overseas holidays being expensive, UK campsites may out price themselves
