Picked up the caravan last night, it looked a lot tattier than the pics on the exterior and the inside wasnt too brill either, the wood looks a bit worn. I didn't find any signs of damp though. I was so fed up of hunting around and what with hubby and myself going away this time next i thought i may as well take it. I'm glad i knocked him down to £1700 before i even saw it though.

I got it home last night and hubby managed to get the electrics working and the fridge worked too (last 2 vans it was broke). They guy showed us where the pipe had just been replaced for the water, and you could see its brand new so im presuming all's well there.

Now for the bad bits.....It is filthy dirty!! Nothing i can't deal with though, and i'm sure it will look a hundred times better once ive sorted it. It's also a 1990 not a 92 like he stated. I didn't think to check to vin plate while i was there17. This has really peed me off cuz i'm an honest person and when i go to sell it on i'm going to lose money on it.

I found a few unsavoury items in there too! A bong (something druggies use to get high on cannabis) Rizla packets torn into small pieces..again for cannabis, they use it to make a filter on the roll up. I also found a torn out page of a porn mag ( i'll keep that for hubby 17) There was also a dead bee and a few dead moths, and some cobwebs. This guy claimed it was clean on his listings!!

All in all i feel quite ill at  whats been going on in the van. Its obviously not been used by a family for a while, it looks like someones tried breaking in too cuz the metal round the door is bent in places. It still locks fine though. We have started a list of things to do, the first being a damn good clean, ive started hoovering out all the dust n bugs this morning. Most of the windows need bars to hold them open, the mattress for the bunk is missing and there is no table for the main bed area. Luckily this has pull out slats so wont be needed for sleeping purposes. I could ring the guy and complain but at the end of the day its my fault for not checking while i was there. He was a friendly enough chap so i think he would be approachable. He said he could put me onto someone for a cheap awning. I think i should ring him explaining everything and tell him he ought to pay the man for the awning as a good will gesture to us!!

We won't be going away this weeked, the caravan needs too much doing to it, its gonna take a few days for the covers to dry out too cuz im going to get them cleaned.

oh mate, sounds a blumming nightmare, cleaning is not a problem and no matter how clean it was I'd clean it anyway........

I would call him and tell him about the missing items, the fact it is 2 years older than he stated and cannabis stuff (how awful). did you buy it from ebay? Maybe I would be asking for a partial refund an not sure I would trust his mates selling awnings!

What is it that u bought? have you got the listing #?

Hopefully it wont happen to us when we pick ours up on saturday...........full report next week!

I'd ring him and tell him of your finds.  I know when you buy a new caravan you are going to clean it anyway, as Lin says no matter how clean it appears, you want to know that it is clean properly, but there is clean and there is dirty, obviously yours was listed incorrectly, especially regarding the year as well.

Good luck, I am sure with a bit of extra work it will be gleaming and ready for a holiday.

Lin, I am going to asked Trevor to and see if he will go and view a caravan with me a few miles from here.  I know I had said that I did not want to see any until I had sold our camper but this one does sound good, and there is an offer on the camper, but not quite as much as what I would have liked. So holding on for a while.

Watch this space ......

Surely the lesson from this is don't part with your money until you have seen it and you are satisfied it is what it is and it meets your needs?

It can't be cost effective to keep buying vans then flogging them on because they are a pile of poo surely?

I have to agree, my b-i-l went to see mine (only 4 miles from where he lives) bought it and towed it back to his house, he is sensible so hopefully it's ok, we'll find out on saturday (which can't come quick enough!) but the good thing is my s-i-l wants it so won't be stuck if we don't like it we can sell it on no harm done, apart from travelling 600 miles!

If only people were honest when describing them eh?

The stupid thing is i did see it before i parted with any money, yes it was from fleabay but no i didn't press no buy it now button etc so sale was outside ebay...so have not got a leg to stand on now. Its my own stupid fault i should have had a proper look, on the surface it looked ok. Admittedly as soon as we pulled up i thought oh no its scruffy looking. I think its just one of them things....you don't notice everything until your sat in it and tinkering with it for a while. As i said before at least it hasn't got the dreaded damp!!

We will have to spend some money on it unfortunately before we sell it, but we have decided to keep it until we've had our 3 child free days away in it next weds.

Things that need sorting so far are as follows: 1. lots of cleaning still. 2. the floor by the door needs a bit of attention but its nothing major and its not rotten. 3. the plastic trims inside the windows sills between the rubbers could do with changing as they are orange from the sun and one of them has come out a bit. 4. We need to replace the mattress for the bunk ( i was thinking of getting 3 sections of foam so its easy to store)  hubby was thinking of maybe using a the pad from a long sun lounger for now till we can get some. 5. The cushions will need cleaning, espesh now after finding that bit of porn 17. 6. i need to sand down and paint or varnish the board under the front windows, someone had put fablon on and sun rippled it so ive had to take it off. I'm sure numerous other things will come up, ive already noticed this afternoon that one of the mirrors from the bathroom cabinet is missing and the top plastic bits of the taps too.

This bloke pulled a very clever stunt, he said he was going out shortly after we were arriving so it didn't really give us enough time to check everything over. I was more interested in going into every nook and cranny looking for damp. As you can  see though its purely cosmetic things that are wrong with it, but it all takes money and will eat into our newer caravan fund! Plus i will probably only get back what i paid for the damn thing and not the extras i would have had to cough up for! You live and learn and next time i will bring a check list with me!

Hopefully any one new to caravanning will read this and learn from my stupid mistakes...but hey ho at least it aint no darn hobby caravan and i can still have my much needed 3 nights in corfe! 17

I would keep it until next season when i would probably get my money back on it but we really need a 6 berth when the colder weather sets in. I suppose our lil lad who's just turned 2 could come into bed with us, but i don't think he would settle down. The back double seats are long enough for him to sleep on without having to set up the double bed and my 7yrold can just about  fit on one too. My tiny 10 yrold can then sleep on the top bunk and then my teenager can go in the tent i just bought her the other day. This will work out a lot more expensive this way as some sites seem to charge nearly the same amount for a tent as they do a caravan!! We really would be better of with a 6 berth but we thought we'd get this one for now so we could have our own break it in and then it would be easier to sell being a twin axle 5 berth.

As for our 3 nights away lin it hasn't sunk in yet lol. the last time we went away alone was nearly 7 yrs ago to a b&b in Torquay. Oh apart from the one night we stayed in a hotel when i was a bridesmaid back in June. A bridesmaid at nearly 35 mind lol!

I really hope your van is good un, i've have to go now..........my son has a nice present for me, can't bear the smell any longer 17. Need to get some housework done too! have you been getting on with yours now that you've got a van lol?

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr! really mad now17. I just went to close all the windows cuz i've done enough for one day and back one wouldn't close properly. I had a look on the outside only to find it was curled up on one side. Great so now i'm stuck with a blooming lemon, cuz no one is gonna buy it off me now! How the hell did i not notice that before buying it! I hope they are not too expensive to replace, any one got any ideas....feeling quite upset now, and tbh i feel like packing the whole caravanning lark in cuz i'm obviously not sharp enough to not get ripped off by people!

Hmmmm I didn't like to say anything but tbh, you have to be pretty discerning in this game not to be ripped off and lose money.

It is an old van so you may need to hunt around a bit.

My advice?  Stick to cottages, statics or B and Bs lol.
