We have a "wet room" type washroom in ours, but never use the shower.

There are 4 of us - we all shower morning and evening.  That's a hellva lotta water to lug around, both clean and dirty.  Its just easier to take the bodies to the water rather than the other way around.

We are all rightly concerned about keeping our caravans damp free so I feel it is best to avoid all this showering (and steam/condensation) in my van.

We always use sites with good facilities and check the reviews on here before booking.

That's why we never used our wetroom one Patches. Julie & the girls use the cubicle one we've had in this van & our last one, but as I'm the water carrier I also go to the block for my scrub up.

There are other things we never do in our van but we won't go there.

I could be wrong, but I think dampness in the walls of the caravan is not caused by steam/ condensation and showering.  I think the problems with damp are usually caused by water ingress from outside the van, i.e. poor sealing/ breakdown of sealant.  Please correct me if I am wrong - this is the way I have alwayus understood it to be.  Providing one is sensible about ventilation, I would have thought there would be no problem with using the shower.  Besides, if showering in a caravan causes dampness then surely the insallation of a shower makes it unfit for purpose?

I agree, but will always go for water hook up if possible, in order to acommodate this!

In fifteen years of caravanning I've used the shower only once, and OH never!  It was a feeble trickling affair, not quite hot or 'wet' enough, once you'd played around adjusting the flow and heat, and in order to get properly rinsed I needed to turn off the water to 'soap up' everywhere, and then turn it back on to rinse. OH had to lug the water and lug away the waste.  Then you had to spend ages drying out the walls and shower tray.  We never repeated the experience, it just wasn't at all pleasant.  On the sort of sites we use now you get absolutely lovely hot water, as much as you want, and don't have to lug it back and forwards.  We've always made immaculate shower blocks part of our essentials when choosing a site.

We'd both like to 'not pay for it if we don't use it' but that isn't an option.  Caravans all come with showers now, and now all with ovens.  We use a small electric oven, currently, outside in the awning, and that suits our needs.  I'd rather do without the shower and the oven, save some money, and save some weight.

We always try to too, but very occasionally you came across a bad one.  Then if you want a shower and the shower block is too busy.........   Wouldn't use the shower in the van ubless we have water hook up.  Generally we tend to vary it a bit.

I agree that having fresh (and possibly grey) water connections does help if you make use of the on-board shower and also understand the issues of using a wet room.

However if you have paid for, and have the space used for, an end bathroom with separate shower cubicle why not use it? If not on water hook-up all it needs is to be a bit organised regarding filling and emptying containers before you go to bed. I think the conveinence and cleanness of using your own facilities outways the need to keep water topped up.

Even staying on the best sites with the most thorough cleaning routine unless you are the first to use after cleaning you still don't know who used the cubicle before you ... and on a busy day how many have used since last cleaned?

Also don't think steam or condensation are an issue, just open the vent and it soon clears. Use the unit for what it is designed for!

Showers causing damp etc in fairly modern caravans must be the biggest load of hogwash I have ever heard and I guess no one can prove me wrong. Even older caravans do not seem to suffer from damp through using the shower.
We lived in ours permanently for over two years with showers twice a day and a damp check showed no signs of damp whatsoever. If it is there and you paid for it, use it!

It's all very well staying on "good" sites and using their sparkling facilities, but the best sites around are in out of the way places with no facilities at all, just a chemical disposal point and a fresh water tap!
Then we use our own sparkling toilet and shower and enjoy the peace and tranquillity, in the knowledge that the only other persons to ever use our shower and toilet, are us!

Thanks for all the replys, i am going to use the shower in the van, i find the sites i use trapsing 3 children is a hassle and the age of the kids means they have to be supervised and the onsite shower cubilcles are not big enough for us 4,

i take all the advice given on board, have 2 aqua rolls, and have told the kids they are on water duty, in fact they did this when i had the tent, and they loved helping their tin tent friends this summer with their aqua rolls, so i will have plenty of room, plenty of water and i know its clean to my own standards.

One of the reasons I prefer caravanning to staying in a hotel (B&B etc) is that in the caravan, I sleep in my own bed, eat off my own plates, cook with my own utensils and use my own shower whenever it is practical.

Our shower is an over toilet one and I wouldnt trust the seals to keep the water from escaping.  We occasionally use club sites and when we do we use the showers.  We mostly camp at farm sites and we are quite happy using the sponge and bowl method for an all over body wash.

I too am happy with an all over wash, but when I want to wash my hair I have a "yachtsmans" .quick wet from head to toe, shampoo, short rinse, conditioner, then soap all over and final rinse! uses very little water this way, and I feel clean and refreshed.

Cheers Jaygee
