At the end od the day most people not all have plenty of leisure time to do what they want to do.Every one does not go caravaning. Ther are others do golf nearly every weekend and some even dangle a bit of string in the water for hours on end get stick for that. . You only have to look at some campsites when people turn up on a pushbike or walkers with back packs. We all can say what do they see in that? I have nothing against caravaning,my brother used to have one and had some lovely holidays with his family when the kids were young.Packed it up when they flew the nest. Just found a new hobbie. We still like the camping and I get on my motorbike and camp with a club. I get a lot of comments about that but that is what I want to do,just like the ones on here only go caravaning, Each to his own if you like the comforts of home do it.My self we don't have a radio or tv when we are away, thats how we like it.

There's a difference between wondering what others get out of their hobbies - and asking them about it - and simply dismissing their interests. The OP seemed to be wondering why their friends were blanking them about their new-found interest.

Because their friends aren't interested in caravaning etc? or perhaps they have a huge amount going on in their own lives? who knows and frankly who cares! Each to their own and who needs the validation of others to enjoy what they do!

...in the case of one of my friends, it's a new whim all the time and frankly I'm bored of the "I've got this new hobby I'm going to...." conversation with him, you can only feign enthusiasm for the first half dozen hobbies

This is what I'm saying. If I tell my friends what hobbies I do in my spare time and they don't show any interest then it doesn't bother me.

I'm a tent enthusiast but had to reply to this post.

I will always try and take an interest in others although sometimes they mean nothing to me, including the new bike my neighbor bought, (er, it had two wheels and was big), and my work mate who goes fishing and caught a 16lb carp (is that big?? And what's a carp? I don't know). I'll still make an effort because to them it's important.

I know what excitement and pride you'd get out of it. I bought a new tent and was as excited as a little puppy on its first walk and sometimes I think my friends humor me, bless 'em. I saw someone's signature once was something like :
'a new tent is like a new baby, to others they look the same but to you it's beautiful,' and that sums it up!

Enjoy yourself, who cares whatever anyone else thinks!

I'm not sure it's jealousy when it comes to these peoples opinions on caravannning, I doubt any of them really wish they had a caravan themselves.

To me it's just 'trendy' to have a laugh at caravanners, much like trainspotters -backed up by the likes of Clarkson et al they have a pre-determned image of us; causing tailbacks, buckets for toilets etc none of them have ever set foot near a modern touring caravan.

People think they are so funny when they take the mick, watch how they look to their mates for support, it's so sad.  One of the worst offenders I encountered had a mororhome himself and whenever he went on holiday he drove separately in his Subaru Imprezza leaving his wife to drive the motorhome with the kids.  When they got to their destination he immediatley set up his laptop and mobile broadband and spent the entire time sufing the 'net.  He never understood how I called him sad ...17

If they are that bad Khanny then I say go for it - tell them just that !  If they really are friends in the proper sense of the word they will then realise that they go too far & are actually being rude, & stop. If not then maybe it wouldn't be much of a loss if you don't see them again.... ?

I have a friend who gets down as she is constanly getting taken advantage of by her family. When I asked why she didn't tell them where to get off she replied "Oh life's too short to fall out with people" my reply was "I think life's too short to put up with people treating you like crap ! "

I met my OH 13 years ago.He hated the idea of caravanning.I used to have a caravan before I met him and had towed it all over the British Isles.I loved it. After  years of pleading he still would not entertain the idea of owning a caravan. Then  I had a  health scare and I decided, 4 years ago,to buy a cheap caravan and have the odd weekend away on my own.I bought a cheap Lunar Meteorite off Ebay and had it delivered to our house. OH seemed vaguely interested.I persuaded him to come away with me the first weekend and off we went to the Wirral Country Park taking our bikes with us.He loved it. Within a few weeks we had upgraded the Meteorite to a larger van.We used this for just under a year when OH decided he would like an all singing, dancing brand new van.We now have our lovely new van and go away often during the year.OH is transformed. It has opened up a completely different world for him.
