We started with tents back in the late 60's, had various tents as the family frew.  Then when the boys left home we went away from camping altogether - as we found it wasnt so easy to get out of bed anymore - and rented holiday cottages instead.  The rents were geting outrageously expensive for somewhere decent and a couple of years ago we decided to get a trailer tent - something we had thought about before we gve up tenting.  The TT was lovely but it didnt work for us, never really could put our finger on why but it didnt - apart from never, ever managing to pack up with the darnn thing dry.  so last year we started to look at Caravans, although Hubby wasnt overly enthused,  we found our lovely Compass in Juanuary of this year and havent looked back since, we love our 'van and being warm and dry, cooking facilities etc.  My Hubby is retired and I retire next spring and are planning a trip down to Rome and back again.  Cant wait for next May to come.  We snuggled the van up for the winter a couple of weeks ago and I am getting withdrawal symptoms already.

I've been told that I first went into a caravan a few days after I was born.My earliest memories is of a cosy van with a solid fuel fire and the newspaper man pushing the Sunday papers through the window. Parents had various caravans over the years and when I got married we tented for a couple of years before buying a 20 year old Monza which we renovated and sold after a couple of years. We then raided the reserves for the money to buy a new van with all the mod cons, however for some reason the spare room in the house is piled up with camping gear that gets used a couple of times a year.

my grandparents had a static when we were kids-we loved it and always had 3 hoidays a year.

Grew up,got married, had kids-and got fed up of working for 50 weeks a year just to pay stupid money for 2 weeks in a cottage somewhere.7 years ago hubby suggested buying a tourer-and we've never looked back.we love it,so do the kids and we have 8 hols a year for about the same price as that cottage.my brother in law has just bought one for exactly the same reason-a week in a cottage in cornwall cost him £850 and it rained all week!not happy!!

I got so fed up of spending a small fortune on holidays and weekend breaks and left disappointed with what we ended up with.Despite trawling through the Trip Advisor web site most holidays never matched our hopes and expectations. Then I sat down and added up how much we had spent over the years...WHAT...how much !!! So me and wifey mused over what else we could do and remembered a lovely week we had years back in Wales in a static van. Then we thought of buying one but we didn't want to have to be stuck in one place all the time. Always though of caravans being pokey and shabby but the wife looked at some caravans on the internet and we were bowled over...they were more luxurious than most hotel rooms.

We spent the next year going round caravan dealers getting a feel for what would be the right layout, size etc. Traded in the car for something suitable to tow with. While we were still making up our minds we decided to spend a year camping. Bought a big Outwell tent and accessories and had a great holiday down in Burgundy. We watched others drive up onto their pitches and in no time at all, were sitting having a beer in the sunshine. Well that finally did it for us, that is definitely for us. So earlier this year we took the plunge and bought a Lunar Quasar 2 berth and we now spend all our time waiting for the next opportunity to get away in it. We are looking forward to next summer and taking her down through France.

We spent a small fortune on a holiday we all didn't really enjoy, bought a cheap van and loved it, 3 vans later (over 6 years) and we still really love the great outdoors.  There is nothing better than waking up to a day with my family, no phone- just walking and cycling with the dog!

What wonderful stories. For us it was cheap holidays in a tent when our boys were small. Then we bought a small Ci Sprite, then a Compass Omega 5 berth. Due to Regimental commitments we had to sell that but we found an old Garland which we loved a few years later. Traded that for a Swift Corniche 2 berth which the Mehim Sahib loved but I hated. Sold that and bought a large tent and all the accessories, which I loved but the Mehim Sahib hated, went to France in September and again in October with it and came back with some kind of broncial issue. I have arthritis in most of my joints now so we looked around for another ' van. I sort of made the excuse that the Mehim Sahib wanted to get back to a  'van which let me off the hook.

Found a '93 Compass Rallye and will spend the winter tarting her up. Already booked for Holland in June. I shudder at the thought of airports and  the Mehim Sahib hates the very thought of hotels. Caravaning is the ideal compromise.

Hi all, we got into caravanning after being told are next door neighbour was going to set fire to our folding camper, we’ve been campers for many years, so we sold the camper, got a caravan with the money, (but its got to go into storage) my wife like the idea of winter caravanning, so I’ve booked 4 nights away over the new year, just hope the snow stays away,

Steve
