Jeff the thing that's a distinct advantage in our book about the fixed bed ones is that if you both want to sleep in the same bed at least you can get in & out without one person having to crawl over the top of the other one.
OH & I looked at a fair few caravans recently & I think there were a few layouts with fixed bed where the living quarters were pretty big. I think there's a lot more to choose from now than there used to be.
Our caravan doesn't have a fixed bed but we don't intend to ever put it away anyway so it's no real advantage that it's not fixed ! We still have a very roomy living area but just a smallish side loo. Don't care much about the loo being `wee' (sorry !) though.
Ooo. I like a big loo, too. (Edit: there's just got to be too many 'oo's in that sentence. ) Some years ago, when we regularly used to go to France for the 6 weeks holiday, we used to leave the front seats made up as a double bed. We basically used to live in the awning and just sleep in the bed.
Jeff, I know exactly what you mean about taking up space, but then you have a lovely large area underneath for storeage. Everything in our van is stored out of site all the time. We don't travel with anything on the floor of the van. Aquaroll, chairs, table, washing up stand, Cadac etc all go under the bed. Without the fixed double we would have to leave some of these things out e.g. chairs don't fit under single bench seats - don't like using washroom for storeage.
It's all a matter of personal taste though. What works well for one, works less well for another. Whatever the van, there are always compromises. Our 4 birth is ideal as a 2 or 3 birth. Now our youngest daughter is getting a bit taller we just pull the 'bed slats' out far enough to make up a single bed across the front of the van. This still leaves enought room for a seat either side should we need it. We all go to bed at the same time when we're away.
So are you thinking about going for a fixed bed next time, La la?
It's gone dark outside, but still no rain here so far this afternoon. Where are you staying at in Dover, Murano. When we go that way, we tend to stop at Black Horse Farm at Densole. Doesn't matter about the rain, just pop the cork on a bottle of wine. Enjoy!
