Each to there own personally I go away to relax and certainly don't want to be lugging water back and forward every day to shower in the van neither do I want to be lifting heavy toilet cassette's to emptying point just to save a few measly quid .

Now there is something worth discussing...

Why does Thetford design a gigantic toilet cassette that you have to struggle to drag to the loo or put your back out carrying it, and then when they come out with a tiny one pee toilet cassette, that could be carried by a new born baby, they stick a couple of wheels on it...    and, while we're at it why do the caravanners that have them not only wheel them to the CDP but wheel them back again empty???

You're saying that the point of these forums is to discuss things and then saying my point of view is not allowed to be part of the discussion

Now I might have to go off in a sulk

The "few measly quid" can soon add up, there can be £10 or more price difference between a site with facilities and one with none. We are retired and go away for weeks at a time, also we don't like big sites. At the moment we are on our own on a CL which for us is ideal, each to their own.

To be fair, everyones opinion is valued, and certain sites suit certain people. We only charge £10 per pitch per night (for up to 4 people) and have spotless toilet and shower facilities, but we are only a small site so don't appeal to many who want swimming pools and clubs etc. We have a fridge freezer in the utility room and a hairdryer in there so a large proportion of our campers can manage without electric hook up.

Every site is different, and customers just have to look around and find sites which suit their needs and pockets

If you don't want to pay for sanitory facilities, then only use sites that don't provide them.
Not rocket science, exactly.

Neither do I particularly want to be emptying the toilet cassette, that won't stop the kids filling it up though, so if I am tied to emptying it anyway, I may as well save the money I would have spend on a toilet block.

It's not a few quid either. We have stayed on sites that charge in excess of £30 a night in high season and also paid as little as £6.50 for the same dates on a CL.£23.50 a night over a two week stay is a massive saving. Lets assume the aquaroll needs filling and the toilet needs emptying every other day or so. Thats a saving of £50 for every time you fill an aquaroll and empty the toilet cassette.

The additional cost are factored into our caravanning excursions so I'm on holiday to relax but each to there own personally if I couldn't afford a full facility site with quality showers and toilets I wouldn't bother caravanning although we do sometimes use non EHU pitches as we have solar power

Dave  those who have their own loo & shower do surely still have a choice whether or not to use it,  or use the campsite ones (if they exist) - whether you've got kids or not !

I think most of us do actually appreciate that it can cost a lot more to stay on some campsites that have these facilities, but again it's not always that much extra,  as shown in the post from a campsite owner above.  However the trade-off is that caravans with spacious washrooms & showers are also very costly to buy (& as a rule heavier & more expensive to tow)  than  a comparable caravan without.

OK,  some campsites do charge a lot extra %-wise - but it takes an awful lot of money to install decent shower & loos, or even to just make significant improvements to eexisting ones.  Building & plumbing materials - & labour - are very costly these days.

Lots of us don't have good shower/loo facilities in our caravans, lots of us actually do,  but prefer or even have to use the campsite's facilities for showering etc.  Some of us feel it's worth paying the extra for that privelege.

Anyone who doesn't feel it's worth the extra doesn't have to go to those campsites -  there are an awful lot of CL's & CS's so it's not as if you aren't well catered for is it ?

So why beef about the fact that there are campsites which cater for the rest of us who do want campsite showers & loos & are prepared to pay a bit extra ???!!!     Sorry but I really don't understand it !

I actually felt that those of us who don't wish to pay extra for facilities were getting criticism, not the other way around.

There was a suggestion that we were cheapskates trying to save a couple of quid, but potentially, the savings are much more.

At a saving of £23.50 a night, the savings would soon pay for your own facilities to be repaired / upgraded or even go a long way towards paying for a better equipped caravan.

For some of us a saving of just 2 or 3 pounds a night can be the difference between being able to afford a weeks holiday or just getting a weekend away. Paying £30 a night is simply not a viable option for us anymore.

If I offered people on site £50 to empty my toilette cassette and refill my aquaroll, I wonder how many takers I'd get because in my experience, I can save that much by staying on a CL and doing it myself. What's more, the elsan point and water tap on a CL is usually far less of a distance to walk than it is on a commercial site.

As I said before I am prepared to pay for where we want to go but our initial searches always begin with CSs then move on from there - well I suppose they would if the need ever arose.

It's not so much what we save but what we spend - if that make sense - and besides, CSs are far better than any big site we have used, even without the basic facilities

I agree with the above, some of the worst sites we have stayed on have been larger commercial sites. We do stay on sites with facilities sometimes, but even these tend to be CLs or CSs and not more than £12 per night.

We might like decent showers & loos on camsites but we never stay on big commercial sites either - the thought of staying at some place with a bar & indoor `amusements' etc etc makes me shudder violently !    No that's not what I mean by `good facilities' at all.    I can well believe that some of the biggest sites are the worst - especially the glorified butlins types.

Dave - believe me I certainly wasn't & would not criticise anyone for wanting to stay on cheaper sites with less (or no) showers.   But I do see where you're coming from - there have been one or two comments which came over that way in the thread (but none that I've made I hope ?! )

I have to say though even if we stayed at much cheaper campsites it  wouldn't go anywhere near being enough to pay for a caravan with a big shower-room.   A lot depends how often you go away - if you're unable to do so very often you're hardly going to save enough to buy a caravn like that are you ?   Anyway - we don't want one !  We're actually very happy with the caravan we've got,  & nice as they are we'd  not dream of spending that sort of dosh on a caravan even if we could.

Quite honestly I really don't think the majority of us who like nice campsite shower blocks are actually criticising you folks `on the other side' at all though.  That would be unfair & pretty daft too !

Personally I think things are fine as they are - there's campsites of both sorts, big and small, and plenty in-between too  - and I personally  hope it stays that way.

I think we should have a discussion first about wether we should discuss discussing it. What ever it is.
Far be it from me to say what anyone should discuss discussing but there are thousand of campers and almost as many sites. All they have to do is get matched up.

Different sites provide different things at different prices.

Different campers want different things at a different budget.
End of pointless discussion.

pointless discussions ? ,, discuss ,,

i think as more and more people experience the delights of a toilet and shower in their own homes , they will expect these comforts when away from home also ,,

as i hardly ever venture on to a campsite , preferring to wildcamp , be totally self contained in all departments is paramount ,,

You're saying that the point of these forums is to discuss things and then saying my point of view is not allowed to be part of the discussion

No no no Rune dear I'm not saying that -  in fact I actually was discussing whether or not we should discuss it  & am doing so again right now ....  I think     So noooooooooo don't sulk !!!

I think we should have a discussion first about wether we should discuss discussing it. What ever it is.
Far be it from me to say what anyone should discuss discussing but there are thousand of campers and almost as many sites. All they have to do is get matched up.

Different sites provide different things at different prices.

they do !

Different campers want different things at a different budget.

again - they do !

End of pointless discussion.

it rarely works that way  though does it !

Btw - I'd like to know where these campsites that Rune mentioned are....

`Currently staying on a site with toilet and shower for £10 per unit night - last year we were on a site, again with toilet and shower, for £12 per unit night but to be fair that one did have a swimming pool as well...
Oh and both were CSs...'

wonder if he's willing to tell ?
