MrRee -

1 Loss of interest ? How about cost of interest if a loan is needed?

2 Depreciation and van worthless at 15 years? You try and get a FREE 15 year old van.

£113 whether you use it or it sits in storage, ours is paid for so costs nothing not to use it.

I am not jealous, we have had a brand new van in the past.

You are clearly a FC fan, why such an interest?

OP - I think you should go for it We intend to prolong our season this year.

hmm ok i see what you are saying ultimately £15000 is worth nothing at all :)

surely the loss of interest would go up ?? as if left in the bank the £15000 would have grown ?? maths is not my forte can you tell :)

No idea what a FC fan is?

1. The loan has been costed in a previous post - but, I am assuming that the person buying a new van has the money available.

2. For the sake of argument I have used the £15,000 up over 15 years - how much is a 15 year old van worth, really? £350? So, £zero.

Yes, £113 extra for a new van whether it's used or not .... I may be mad, but I have assumed that someone withdrawing £15,000 out of the bank and buying a new van would actually want to use it as much as someone with a £350 15 year old van.

I'm not saying everyone is jealous .... just that it can rear its ugly head when talking about options some don't have - that's all.

OH, yes I love our FC .... but, are also looking for a caravan - hence the reason I have been doing some sums.

We have looked at old vans, not so old vans, and new vans. Anything older than 2001 doesn't appeal in all honesty ... none that we have seen anyway.

And, when you get to 2010, 2011 vans .... then new is certainly the best option.

The new van is an option worthy of serious consideration if you have the funds is all I'm saying ..... and, that I'm surprised only £113 a month seperates an old van from a new van.

we rally with an independant club and do so all year round.  During the summer months they erect a marquee where during the day they have activities for the children which has meant that our 13 year old daughter has made lots of new friends.  During the winter they use sites where there is a clubhouse we can use so again there are activities during the day and a social on an evening.  In fact she's enjoyed these rallies so much that when we went to Spain over the recent half term she decided to stay with her Great Aunt and Uncle and go on the rallies where she had a fantastic time.  I'd say got for it.

Just for reference we've had a number of vans, ranging from a really old 1989 van to a brand new one in 2008 and I have to say that we prefer the older vans because all we did was worry about the new van being damaged, the insurance was a lot higher than the older vans and I always worried that because it was new that it was more likely to be nicked being more desirable to sell.  Either way we've had plenty of fun and will stick with what we have - a lovely 1995 2 berth van with everything that a new van has in full working order

although our van is old ( 22yrs old) it has alot of mod cons that new caravans have so buying a oldish van could be a cheaper option. a friend of ours has purchased a new caravan on finance and is now regreting it and says he wishes he had kept his old van!

I find this most odd.

In 2008 you had a brand new van ..... but, now, just 4 years later you have a van which is 17 years old?

I suspect that events must have forced you down that route as it's a most unual choice to make without external events influencing it.

Having read this thread i think its great if you can afford a new van,you may have a few mod cons better than others but,at the end of the day its just a roof over your head. You can get as much pleasure out of an older van as you can a new one so why get yourself into debt ? I was told not so long ago by our local caravan dealer when, i was looking for another van, i could take a brand new one over 7 years ? 7 years!! i never inquired what the interested would be over that period (it must have been frightning )As far as depreciation was, i was told by a friend who worked for them at that time, a van depreciates £2000 per year.

it's not odd, just that we decided to sell the van after owning it for less than year for something that suited our needs better at that time.  Another reason not to buy a new van unless you know that nothing in your life is going to change where you may decide that selling is the better option.  On the plus side I'm no longer stressed out about the new van like I was and I'd never buy new again especially when you read on here about all the people who have problem vans
