I live in Ruby and  was followng some one towing a caravan. and his rear right hand indicator was not working and they turned on to the motorway south and I assume going on holiday. He obviusly never checked his lights before moving and his warning sound must have told hin thatr some thing was wrong

To be fair Nutkins did cause a bit of confusion with their original comment, hence the references to the highway code. However, they have since gone on to clear that up so we now they do know how to join a motorway and are not one of the inconsiderates.

To be fair if you read nutkins post again, he is saying the same as me (maybe not as clearly). He was saying people on motorways are often not considerate of those trying to merge. I am more vexed at the people who have the attitude the slip road is no concern of theirs, and have no intention of trying to make the roads safer by being more acommodating to fellow motorists.

Eh?...was I the bad guy here or summat?
My original post was meant to be viewed from a motorist 'on the motorway' perspective. I just feel that a little consideration for others attempting to join especially when its very busy is something that people should think about. After all, we all have to use those slip roads!!
Dread to think if i have to slow to a stop with the caravan in tow because nobody has the courtesy or common sense to let us join at a safe speed.

So anyway, back to the original post - Motorists do seem to see "RED" when a caravan is being towed anywhere near them, why I don't know but we had lots of similar experiences to those mentioned above when towing - Europe however is completely different and we have never had any road rage or towing rage there, in fact its a pleasure towing in France.
We now have a motorhome and have to say we don't get any issues now so I conclude it is a caravan dislike thing, maybe jealousy?
Answers on a postcard please........

I've never had trouble trying to merge onto a motorway when towing the caravan, probably because we tend to avoid travelling in peak times.

But I did have a really scary moment on the M27 at Rownhams Services near Southampton a couple of years ago. There is a really strange on-slip (coming on from Romsey I think) where two lanes merge in from the left.

A woman merging in from the left didn't look once in her mirrors or in her blind-spot (though God knows a caravan wouldn't be entirely hidden in a blind-spot anyway!). And I know she didn't look because I said to my husband, who was passenger at the time, 'she's not watching and she doesn't know I'm here', and a matter of a second later she moved very rapidly over into the lane I was in, while she was still alongside me.

I already had my foot hovering over the brake and I was forced to brake hard to avoid her slamming into the side of my 1998 Subaru (my pride and joy at the time) and because of my sudden braking she did clear my front bumper but by no more than about 3 ft. She carried on her journey, apparently oblivious that she had almost given me a heart attack.

I was very grateful to get away with this near-miss for several reasons.

Firstly, I saved my car from being an almost certain write-off.

Secondly, I was very fortunate that no-one slammed into the back of the caravan as a result of my heavy braking. I hate it when people drive too close behind the caravan, you never know when a vehicle in front may need to perform an emergency avoidance manoevure like I had to!

As a female driver, and confident caravan tower, I loathe bad drivers as much as the next person. But bad drivers are not always women (though mostly they are 17 )

Stopping on the motorway

Please take a look at the link, this is taken from the highway code. It is not about joining the motorway but refers to stopping on said motorway.

I hope common sense and courtesy prevails in any part of our lives.

"You MUST NOT stop on the carriageway, hard shoulder, slip road"...(according to the law)

as I alluded to (but wasn't sure) previously!

Therefore traffic travelling the majority of their journey in the left hand lane of a motorway need to be wary and apply courtesy and common sense when slip roads are a approaching. Sorry to go on, but I think i've been misunderstood!
As long as I don't get stuck on M62 first time out ya ratbags...choc-a-bloc down there most nighs!

I think you will find this relates more to pulling over and stopping, not pausing due to heavy traffic when joining. I can never recall having to stop, ever, you just merge in. If you read the section on joining it also says the motorway traffic has priority.

People whom have had never had to stop on the slip road, before joining the motorway, have most certainly never travelled on a busy motorway at 8.00am in the morning going to work. I travel everyday on the M60 and m62 round manchester, and have to stop to join the m60 every morning at my local junction due to shear amount of traffic not moving on the motorway, and a similar manner at 5.15pm coming home, and oh yes i have seen people stop on the slip road prior to directly joining the motorway as much as i have seen people pulling straight off the hard shoulder into a stream of fast moving traffic. Driving standards are appalling, not just the young or female but the older and male too we are all guilty of indiscretion at some point. However i have always believed that you should join the motorway at the appropriate speed and other motorists where possible could pullout, out of common courtesy and safely to let the joining motorist into the traffic. But pulling close on 1.5t of caravan its not always easy to deviate form the left hand lane and maintaining a steady speed in relation to motorway traffic speed is essential in order to avoid traffic hitting you from behind by making a sudden reduction in speed.

Similar thing happened to us once, we had inadvertantly gone down a very narrow lane, and after going down it for about a mile - seemed like a hundred!!), we could see the end of the lane about 50 yards away! Deep joy. But then a car pulled into the lane coming our way. He clearly saw us, but soldiered on regardless. He stopped a few yards from us ans insisted I reversed the mile back to the start of the lane! I got out of the car, went to the caravan and told him I was going to make a cup of tea, then make the bed up as we fancied staying the night! He reversed!

I can actually see some of the (flawed) argument on the slip road one. Think about approaching an acute junction where the main road you are to join is on your right shoulder, and then turning left at the junction. You wouldn't indicate right unless turning right.

Difference is on slip road is you don't have option to legally turn tight at end of slip road where the give way part is so you indicate right merely to indicate you are wishing to join the main carriage way

You could argue that indicating on a slip road is totally pointless lets face it where else are you going to go anyway?
