Very difficult situation for you, but fwiw I think they were a bit out of order asking that. You obviously feel sympathy towards your sister but as others have said, she wouldn't really enjoy the holiday if she was worried about the van, and if she wasn't worried about it, you wouldn't want her to have it!

I would say yes as you can always replace..

The bed slats as they have been jumping on them.

The window catches as they like opening a window to shout at their pals.

The toilet flush as they like to see where all the water goes.

The carpet in the vanity room if youve got one as they have left a tap on and put the plug in the sink.

The door lock,as they like to slam the door.

Dents on the side of van caused by a ball or rocking on a chair.

Tear in the awning as they dont use the door but see if they can get in under it.

Ball mark on front window.

Felt pen marks or crayon on walls.

Spills of cola tea, milk, etc on carpet.

Hope this helps with   a decision

Ask youre wife .if she says yes then its ok ,but i would warn youre sis that caravans are not as robust as a house ,things break easy ,and extra care ,with everthing has to be the rule,This may convince her too book a static for a weekend ,

Glad too see you have stud up for yourself. So what if your having 4 or 40 holidays this year. I bet you have had years without holidays like we all have. It didn't kill us your sister can look for free day trips out with her kids and there's usuly council run kids clubs and sports stuff in peak holiday season they can do. If she wants a holiday next s year she could book and start paying it off now a bit at a time. If your mothers so upset she could always pay the extra for a peak time static rental for your sister

Holidays are a privelige not a right. If you can't afford them you don't go. I work fulltime and have all my camping gear in the cupboard upstairs but we aren't going away.My husband lost his job last year, no longer entitled to any benefits and its taking every penny of my wages to pay our bills, mortgage and to eat. Am I moaning that I'm not getting a holiday? no. Once hubby finds another job we'll get back on our feet and start enjoying holidays, take aways, meals out etc. Until then we live at the level we can afford. Your sister needs to learn to do the same

I dunno....

I can understand why you wouldn't want to do it, and if you don't want to then you shouldn't.

But to me a caravan is only a possession - if it breaks, it's insured, if it falls to pieces, it can be replaced. But to be able to give my family or friends a holiday that they otherwise wouldn't have, so they can have the fun that we have and make the memories we do - that's just such a good thing to be able to give someone.

We didn't know what we were doing to start with (and anyone watching us put our "new"  big awning up this weekend for only the second time will probably conclude we still haven't got a clue ) but we managed to pick it up in our first weekend away without demolishing the caravan in the process - it's not really rocket science, is it!

So they'd get a tour round to emphasise that there's nothing wrong with the van and that I expect to see it back in the same state, otherwise there'd be bother and they'd never be trusted with it again! Then yes, stick them on a good site and hope they had a fab week.

I don't think I could lend my 'van out. It's the thought of excitable small kids jumping on beds, being fascinated by and continually pressing the flush button, hosing wee all over the loo area, spilling drinks, pulling seals off the 'van door everytime they get in and out (and in and out and in and out) as they use the door frame to heave them selves up on and then there's the worry mum will not realise the aqua roll is empty and the pump running like a nutter, bit knowing what to so if mad weather arrives (like secure the awning or take it down) because she won't realise she should.

It's mean and selfish but I can't afford to keep replacing broken stuff and if someone is that skint they can't afford any kind of holiday at all unless its free one then they can't afford to pay for broken stuff and you'd end up in a position of having to just sort it outbid your own pocket (not to mention time spent finding parts) and then her free holiday is costing you money!

I've got an old crappy so in some ways I think it's worse when stuff gets broken, I can't go and buy something new off the peg so to speak. I've got to hunt about and find some old part secondhand or pay to overhaul something to a modern version.

My kids didn't have holidays for years because we were so poor, I don't find them crying into their weetabix over their empty barren deprived childhood. They just appreciate the one we have now a whole lot more.

My childhood is filled with memories of having cousins to stay or being farmed out to aunties houses for a week. They felt like holidays, its wa fun and a nice reciprocal arrangement between family members. I have some cracking memories of all that. I don't buy into all this emotive stuff another kids need a holiday to make memories and have a good time. Good times come from you and yours they don't have tobhappen as specified "holiday" locations.

Just my opinion.

I agree with White Rose , let them have it , they might suprise you !  We have lent our van to sisters on several occassions , and they have looked after it . admitted my van is 15 years old now , but we still love it ,and want it looked after . when one of my daughters got married my sister said she could not afford to come and stay on the Isle of wight , what with the cost of the ferry , and digs , so we put our van on a site for the week , I even paid the site fees for her , ( she aint got the proverbial pot ) , and the van was spotless when they left ,  admittedly there was one broken window catch , but things happen !

anyway I was chuffed she came to the "do" . and I must be honest I felt good that I done her a good turn .   I know what she would have done if the shoe was on the other foot so to speak .

Anyhow you have to do what YOU think is right , and good luck !

  Phil

I think there's a difference between facilitating someone coming to a big thing like a wedding and being bullied into lending your sister your 'van because you mum says you should as you've got holidays booked and your sister can't afford any.

It's something which has to be down to the individual but, we've never even considered lending either of our caravans out & I'm afraid we wouldn't do it if asked.

We once bought a great big tent off ebay for 40,00 and had loads of holidays in it, can she afford to do this, you could always lend her chairs, table, bbq and other camping equipment, she could then get the kids involved with pitching up getting water, cooking their tea etc, they would love it and then she would be able to have loads of other holidays in the future once she has the tent and your caravan would still be intact, J x
