Hi folks,
Mr Pooter's wife here. We have now had 2 mini adventures in our new baby and we love it! As Mr Pooter said, we are caravan virgins so we have done loads of things wrong and have learnt lots of lessons - but all great fun.
Mr Pooter is in the process of setting up a blog so I am not going to go into any details about our experiences getting a towbar fitted to my still-in-warranty BMW Series 1 (quote from BMW... £1,500!!!!!), or our towing course (fab), first night away, teething problems etc. When the blog is available I will post again. However, I did want to pass on an abbreviated version of our experiences with the awning.
We got the bespoke Vango awning bundled in with our deal but thought it would be too big for general use so we bought a small, lightweight porch awning as an alternative. We actually went for a Sunncamp Envy as all 3 sides lift up if required, so very versatile for shade / ventilation.
We knew the awning bead was slightly longer than the awning rail but only a small portion of the triangles at the top overlapped. We have eyeleted these and they can be guyed out of the way quite easily.
The sides are a bit more problematic... the vertical edges of the side walls are not flush to the van because of the significant bulge of the grey mouldings round the edges of the Basecamp. We are hoping to address this with the use of tarpaulin grabbers (if that's the right term) and rubber suckers to hold the edge of the awning to the van body above and below the mouldings. I'll report back on how we get on.
Sorry to burble on for so long (especially on my first post - please be gentle).
To anyone who is contemplating a Basecamp I would say "Go for it!" We love ours. It is everything we hoped it would be.

Well, we've had our second major adventure in Arthur and we were so comfortable and warm. The heating system worked perfectly and would come on when the temp went below 19degs. When the sun did come out the large front window opens out to let the warm air in
The ambient lighting is fab for a cosy night when it's cold and wet outside.
We opted for the bespoke awning and have found it perfect for our needs. I managed to put it up on my own and love the way the door has a cover that is like a wind shield. The air system inflated 'poles' is a pleasant surprise and has taken some battering from Easterly coastal winds.
Although Arthur is bijou he has lots of little storage bits and the oven works a treat. Arthur is fab, cosy and cute. He looks good too with lots of complimentary comments from other van owners.

Hello all

Just pitching in (excuse the pun) with a review of our Basecamp. Ours is called Brian, as before we joined the world of caravanners, we always called them ‘snail people’ (slow-moving with their homes on their backs). And who is the most famous snail in the world……?

You may guess that as I remember the Magic Roundabout clearly, we are also not Swift’s target age range for the Basecamp, being in our late forties and mid fifties.

We had been tent campers for some years, and although we thought we would get a ‘van at some point in the future, we didn’t expect it to be so soon! But then we went to the NEC Show back in February – just looking for bits ‘n’ bobs for our tent – saw the Basecamp and just loved it. We ride a tandem bike, so the first thing we saw was that we could get the bike in through the rear door and transport it! Not something we had ever considered before, and it opened up a whole new world of possible adventures. We loved the clean, uncluttered look, no chintz or frills or carpet. I almost signed there and then, but hubby is more cautious, so we went home, pondered and decided that it was perfect for us – and life is short after all!

A search on the internet revealed not too many available local to us, but we found one in stock in Lincoln – and collected him on 4th April. We have had a couple of trips out and of course have made mistakes and hit snags – but this is all part of the fun and we just love this little ‘van.

We decided to look for a porch awning too, and by coincidence have also gone for the Sunncamp Envy 200. It has arrived today, just in time for our Bank Holiday trip. We realised the vertical rear edges would be a problem around the bumper mouldings and had wondered about somehow adapting Kampa’s Limpet system? Will also report back if we find a solution.

So, just to echo the general feeling on here – these are brilliant little ‘vans. If you are considering one, just do it. We are so pleased we did.

Hi , we collected our Basecamp this week a much anticipated event ! We have had camped & had a Camplet trailer tent but this is our first caravan so quite daunting ! As we expected the necessary accessories came in around £1000 which includes security devices & a battery which we hadn't realised would be an optional extra ! An error we made was that we assumed the electric connection we already had from the trailer tent would be suitable . However ours is 7 pin & you need 13 , we bought an adapter so the lights & indicators worked but the fridge, reversing light & ALCO all need a 13 pin to work so we have to get that changed . Our first planned trip is in 2 weeks to Bala , our miniature poodle Archie will be very excited . Keep the advice coming fellow Basecampers as I'm finding it all very useful.

Because it is mounted inside the van you are limited to the size. You will need to measure the space and check that the battery you buy will fit. I can't remeber what size ours was as hubby sorted that bit out

Many thanks stainsbygirl. Sure we'll have a walkthrough when we pick it up. Until recently we were happy campers and since the kids are growing up and invariably stay at home rather than come with us we thought we'd treat ourselves.

Hi DodgeLisie, hubby says he thinks it a 110amp it's the biggest we could possibly fit. You wont regret it, we think the base camp is fab. Small but perfectly formed. Very easy to keep clean and very cosy

Helloo all!

Caravanning noob here, hopefully taking delivery of my Basecamp Plus in the not too distant future (ordered in January and getting a bit impatient now LOL!) I have some questions which hopefully you can answer - one or two are a bit odd but hey ho!

Awning - does it fit in a standard size pitch with the Basecamp? I do a lot of dog shows and generally the pitches are 24ft. Wondering if I have to park sideways!

Towing - have opted for ATC obviously. My vehicle is a Mercedes Vito so hoping that the van reduces drag etc. Anyone had any issues with sidewinds, lorries and so on?

Noseweight - gone right over my head tbh! Dealer says 100kg given the towing vehicle?

Weight distribution - luckily I can carry a lot of "stuff" in the van - aquaroll, awning etc. But there does seem to be many things I need! How do you calculate your 111kg worth? How much do gas bottles weigh for example?

Daft question alert - the sink - Does a standard round washing up bowl fit? I think I measured the sink as 30cm. Standard bowls seem to be the same size...

Bed - how comfy is it? Should I invest in a mattress topper?

Inverter - most venues don't have hook up. Any advice on inverters please?

Thanks in advance!

Well, have finally got Billy Basecamp home today! Gosh what a lush little character, looking forward to plenty of outings this year

However - towing. have done a towing course and already used to towing trailers anyway, but was a bit disconcerted by the amount of bounce and also a continual shunting, rather like someone tapping you on the shoulder every 10 seconds and saying "hellooo!" Didn't have this when on the towing course; is it because I was hauling an empty vessel as it were? Towing vehicle is a Vito V6 and tbh I never noticed the course caravan at all! It was a little off putting.

The other issue is the whole 7 pin/13 pin debacle - why on earth the garage fitted a 7 pin is beyond me! I now have an adaptor but obviously the fridge won't run in transit and apparently neither will the ATC work properly (see towing issue above). Thinking of getting it replaced ASAP or asking Sir to do it (he's qualified enough but not sure how this would affect insurance etc.

Advice gratefully received

Hi NS
We too noticed the bouncing and shunting on picking up the Basecamp as complete nubs. Unfortunately, you do have to get to grips with the nose weight issue by buying a nose weight gauge. We found on measuring the nose weight that it was around 30kg when we first drove the van. We worked out that with the nose weight needed to be nearer to 75kg for our a Basecamp Plus with leisure battery and wheel/towbar locks.

So when we loaded up crockery, bedding, water containers, walking gear, food, tv, and that heavy awning etc we distributed more of it towards the front. We then checked the nose weight using the gauge and it was 70kg-ish, and the ride was a lot smoother but still a bit of shunting. I guess that is just caravan towing for you...

Check out caravan info sites for how to work out the van weight, the car-van train weight together, and the nose weight. You will need to weigh or estimate the things you commonly take away in the van or car as a one-off exercise and stick it on a spreadsheet or similar. Then consult the internet and the caravan club documentation to see about weight options. Note that because we did this in advance we asked for a weight plate upgrade to the Basecamp which is just a little plastic plate saying the increased weight it will take, and I think affects how big the tow car needs to be. If you need to do this afterwards Swift charge £25.

We also found that the tires had been pumped in error to the higher pressure of most single axle caravans by the dealer, whereas the Basecamp uses a different pressure to other caravans. Worth investing in a pressure gauge and pump.

Can't help with the 7/13 pin I'm afraid, we had our tow car (2015 BMW Series 1) fitted with a removable 13 pin by an excellent towbar workshop in Wigan. BMW wanted to charge £1500!

Hi mrpooter

Thanks for the reply I did consider tyre pressure as a possibility so will check the manual (my husband's Navara truck is like a space hopper if the tyres are inflated to the correct pressure - horribly bouncy ride); I think my course instructor said something like 80 - 100kg for noseweight (can't remember exactly!) I was going to carry most of the heavy stuff in the middle of the van (dog cages at rear) but sounds like some of it needs to go in the caravan! Will certainly do some weighing and calculating of essentials in the next week or so, I need to get things right as first port of call is in Kent in a couple of weeks
Will trot back to dealer tomorrow and ask some more questions!

Hi Norfolk Sheep
MrsPooter here... as hubby said, you really want to look at getting the noseweight right as that affects the ride quite significantly. You need to go for the lowest of 3 values applicable to your combination: the maximum noseweight recommended by your vehicle manufacturer; the limit on your towbar and the limit on your caravan chassis. All these values should be in the respective documentation. Beyond that, the Caravan and Motorhome Club recommend a value of 5 to 7% of the caravan's actual laden weight (but this must be equal or less than the lowest of the actual limits above).
Also, have you had a stabiliser hitch fitted to your Basecamp? Unusually, the Basecamp is sold with a standard hitch (everyone on the towing course was surprised by this). I understand a stabiliser hitch can "smoooth out the bumps" a bit. We haven't changed ours and have got used to the occasional twitch from the van now.
We haven't towed before so didn't really know what to expect but we certainly wouldn't agree with people who say "you wouldn't know it was on the back".
BTW our Basecamp tyres were overinflated by 50% on collection from the dealer! Should have been 40 something psi and were actually 65 psi!
Let us know how you get on!
