Checked my Elddis, when the bar is up you cant bring it down with the key.

Some more bad news to depress you all - the least secure aspect of van doors is the barn door - a caravan thief once told me its a simple case of a crowbar between the two halves and flip - up they pop. However he preferred windows cause they were even easier.

The summary is of all this, is caravans can be broken into if someones wants to. They cant be that secure with plastic windows and light wood doors. However the likelihood with you in it is very rare indeed. Few burglars want to run the risk.

So like crimewatch says - dont have nightmares just be aware of your surroundings and you will be fine.

Hi Wizard sorry to hear about your experience. I work for the company that manufactures the caravan locks and handles. Have you considered changing the exterior barrel lock assembly with our high security type? Its a simple straight swap.

Our Avante came with one of the magnetic contact type alarms fitted to the door and, whilst we always switched it on when we left the 'van, we'd stupidly never thought to flick the switch once we were in for the night - will do now, thanks!

Mind you, whilst our 14 year lab / collie cross who's now mostly deaf would probably quite happily snore through the visit of any burglar, our six year old Jack Russell Terrorist (yes, that's the word I meant!) would be ready to meet any intruder with an open mouth and much barking!!

On the security note, we've often thought about improving the security of the caravan and had looked at getting the window alarms mentioned earlier but, an expensive few months meant I kept putting off buying the ten we'd need to secure all nine windows in the 'van.  Toddling round Asda the other night, I spots their £1 an item section and finds there a box of these very alarms!  £1 for a pack of two, including batteries - five packs straight in the basket!  Don't think they have the red, flashing light others have mentioned but, at 50p a shot, I'm not complaining.  We'll fit them next time we're down at the 'van and will try to update on their effectiveness.

On your advice, Wizard, keys and the like are no longer left anywhere obvious and anything of any value is hidden away whenever we're not about - many thanks for sharing your experience.

If anyone is interested, a good security measure (and Im amazed the manufacturers dont do it) is to drill a little hole just under the locking arm when its in the lock positon on the back plastic plate.

save drilling holes just use the catch that stops the bottom half of the door opening when the top is open and then the door can not be opened at all from the outside. never bothered doing it myself but will from now on!!!

Re. the catch on the bottom half of the door-have you tried it? It only holds the bottom half closed.
