You may find a legal hiccup with your wi-fi camera idea if the viewing screen is viewed or can be seen by the driver and deemed to be a distraction.

I also help a dog rescue charity by transporting rescued dogs around the country, we have to meet legal and welfare standards and insurance restrictions.

A Passenger would be monitoring any camera feed, and temperatures, during a two hour journey, so there would be no legal hiccup.

There would be no legal issues if harnesses are used and the welfare of the animals are being monitored, and addressed throughout any journey.

I see no animal welfare or safety issues related to what I have proposed, no legal impediment, and no illegal activity.

The concerns of most respondents are noted, but yours is the most comprehensive and detailed answer with respect to the above, and I thank you for your input and advice.

Whether legal or not I simply don't know. What I do know is that I wouldn't be happy with my dog travelling in our caravan, even if we could monitor him. Caravans can be very bouncy on the road, and I wouldn't think travelling in one would be a pleasant experience for a human or a dog. I certainly wouldn't want to travel in one.

Admittedly our dog is small, but he always travels in a cage in the back of our car. Back seat folded down and cage up against the back of the front seats, with the back of the cage strapped down. Our dog is always much happier when he's with us. There are only the two of us in the car though, and I realise this would not be practical for a family.

I have towed most things in life, boats, car trailers, goods trailers, sheep trailers, single and multi axle, particularly when I owned a Land Rover some years ago, in addition I used to be a HGV Driver for the Army, towing all sorts, from radio box bodies, to 32kVA Generators, to steerable trailers, and before retirement I was an Ambulance Paramedic and obviously attended Emergency Driving Courses and completed a ROSPA Advanced Driving Course reaching Gold Standard in my own time.

I don't think there's any facet of driving that I am unaware, although I did vow at an early point in my career to never tow a caravan, funnily enough.

However, I am contemplating investing in a 6 berth twin axle caravan to tow behind my Audi A8L V12, I'm also looking at towing a car trailer to track days to play with another Audi, an S3 Quattro, so I'm potentially going to be towing quite regularly, indeed I'm a Radio Amateur and have been looking at the ARCC website as well, since I will want to use my investment regularly.

I consider myself a safe driver, never even been issued a Parking Ticket, despite doing 135mph in fast response vehicles during my career, I am not some newbie without a clue, and not someone that indulges in any illegal activity, including animal cruelty.

So any suggestions that I might harm, or put in harm's way, my children (and this would refer to my grand children at this stage in my life), is both offensive and ridiculous, and those that consider such argument as viable position, need to sit down for five minutes and look at what they have written long and hard, before posting.

I know of no-one that has undertaken a journey in the back of a trailer or caravan (apart from farmers in a field), since it is illegal on public roads and rightly so, so no-one can know what that is like to travel for two hours inside a caravan.

It is legal for animals to be transported in a trailer, and that includes a caravan, and my concerns for my much loved family pets, all three of them, that would travel in my caravan, would be subject to tests with visual and environmental checks, without animals present, and if results are found to be satisfactory, then short journeys would be considered of up to 15 minutes under the same rigorous monitoring.

I don't like driving on long journeys for longer than two hours at a time without a break, and I would consider if I need a break, so does the family pet, so that is my self imposed maximum journey length.

This is all up for re-consideration if at two hours in a three hour journey, all my dogs are asleep in the caravan, I will cross that bridge if I have to, but as I don't like longer than two hours behind the wheel its unlikely.

As I've been accused of not caring; when I have bought my 'outfit' (I understand that is the terminology Caravanners use), I will record all video during testing, and post this on YouTube, including any other journeys of note, including any dogs asleep after two hours.

You can all then tear my activity to shreds using my own evidence, but before that, give me the benefit of the doubt, I am not a bad person.

Well it certainly wasn't my intention to judge you or anyone else. All I can say is what I personally would or wouldn't do. Being as I wouldn't want to travel in a caravan, legal or otherwise, I wouldn't feel comfortable with my dog travelling in one. I don't think he would like it either, as he likes to be be able to see us when we are on the move. Maybe it's just me, as you rightly say Wireless, farm animals regularly travel in trailers.

I too have been a professional driver most of my life, and I'm now retired. I still hold a PCV licence which entitles me to drive a tri-axle coach with a large luggage trailer attached. I have done a lot of towing too, and also used to have a small haulage business where I regularly towed all sorts of things including boats, goods trailers, and car transporter trailers.

I am not a judgemental person, as far as I am concerned what others do is entirely up to them. I only speak for myself and probably my wife. I know there's no way she'd let our dog travel in the caravan, she'd linch me if I even suggested it.

What an interesting thread. Firstly I did not realise it was started in 2008!

For me, people sometimes seem hell bent on finding something to either argue with or to correct other people. This urge (in my experience) is multiplied many fold when children/dogs (plus other hot topics such as race/religion/politics) are involved.

So, what have I learnt from these posts?

1 It is not illegal to carry animals in caravans.
2 Some people will do it.
3 Some people won't do it.
4 Some people try to impose their views on others.
5 Some people don't try to impose their views on others.
6 Most people don't properly read all of the previous posts.

So, in short, I have learnt absolutely nothing

Ohh, and for the record I would need some convincing before I'd travel with my dogs in the caravan. Luckily all of our dogs (current and previous) have been good travellers in the (estate) car(s)

Peace and love.

Yes Tidbury Boy, we have been lucky with our dogs too, they have all been good travellers. Our current dog will try and get in the car if I open the rear door, even though he can't jump up there any more. He's got older and the car we have now is higher, but it still doesn't stop him trying. When I do lift him up there he walks straight into his cage and lies down. He's rarin' to go!

Simple solution is to buy a vehicle more suited to the job, Or even a Large motorhome with a car trailer to tow the Audi.

Or is this post just a windup ?

Well, I don't personally want a motorhome, and dare I say it, they are over priced for what they are, but then that's my personal opinion, and having had a VW Type 2 Camper, those are definitely over priced for what they are.

I also don't need a massive motorhome to tow a car transporter to a track day, since I won't be staying overnight, once the fun is over I'm off home.

I also plan days out at the beach, or to watch sporting events, and don't need a motorhome or caravan to do that.

In addition, I plan to stay in cottages/hotels on some weekends away, and a large luxury car would make the journey more pleasant and would be easier to park at the other end of the journey, plus the dogs will be left at home with one of my children house sitting.

So when I do want to take a long weekend, week, or few weeks touring, all I need to do is hitch up the caravan, which doesn't need the same amount of maintenance, insurance, testing or expense as a motorhome.

I can also buy a luxury Caravan cheaper than a similarly aged motorhome.

There are so many reasons why a caravan suits my circumstances more than a motorhome, one of which is leaving the caravan on a site whilst touring the area down less accessible roads & tracks in a car, and yes I've been in a few motorhmes and I think they are fabulous, but just not for me.

Everyone has an opinion, and their decisions suit their circumstances, so to be blunt, and honest, the simple solution for me is the one that suits me, not you.

Yes, I read that and wondered whether the roof being caved in on the back of the car would have killed a dog travelling in it.

Just shows how a poorly loaded trailer/caravan can cause an accident like that.

I think they were all lucky.

Then buy a vehicle that will suit all your needs including your dogs, I mentioned a motor home as they are often used by people who race cars, a mate of mine used to tow a rallycross car with a Winnebago.

If you study the video closely it looks more like the dog was thrown out of the back of the car rather than the caravan.

But I'm certainly not putting my dog in the caravan, IMHO even a crushed car is a safer place, cars are designed to crush safely at their extremities whilst the main passenger compartment remains intact, caravans have no such safety features.
