I loved reading your little opening about yourself and Poppy, and I would really like you to park next to me on a site one day. I will be 70 next month and love talking about experiences and would be very interested in how you are fixing your caravan up. I hope you both enjoy caravaning and don't let anybody put you off.

I bought my first van at your age too but can't say I had a negative response from other vanners.

If you pitched up next to us I would be only too happy to share my jug of Pimms with you. I judge people by how they treat me and whether they are courteous to those around them, not their age.

Have many happy hols.

Its not your age...its because you come from Derbyshire!

TBH, if Poppy was pitched in a van beside me, I'd be knocking your door down!

There's always someone on the site who will seem to look down on you. In my experience, they are normally shy people, who lack the self confidence to say Hi, let alone risk a conversation. Most of them are lovely folk when you get to speak to them.

Stop stressing over it and enjoy yourselves. Just bear in mind most of the women on site are envious of Poppy, and most of the blokes are jealous of you! That should put a smile on your face!

I'm a 'young' 'vanner (well folding 'vanner ) single mum of 3...(i'm 35) only been out once so can't really say of peoples reactions to me. I hope I don't get dodgy looks and wide berths because of the way we look or how the van looks

I'm very new to this (second ever outing with the van coming up this weekend - can't wait) but based on everything I've read (largely here) and the experiences of friends who have been caravanning for years I'm expecting the nice people to outnumber the "look at that idiot reversing like an idiot, the idiot" kind of people by a factor of about 100:1.

Personally I don't believe in looking down at people (could be a self-esteem issue.  maybe I've never met anyone I felt qualified to look down on ) and anyone who behaves like that, regardless of the reason in their own minds, is automatically the kind of person I'm very good at ignoring.

One of my favourite quotes regarding people who are snobby over materialistic things like the age of a car or caravan is from Oscar Wilde (it wasn't about caravans, but it works well) - I think of them as people who "know the price of everything but the value of nothing".

If you see someone driving a Santa Fe reversing an Adria badly whilst laughing at their own incompetence who then spends two hours wrestling with an awning whilst being watched by his wife, three children and two dogs (should be three in a few weeks - it's puppy time!) then that'll be me.  Just come over and say hello (preferably with a spare beer in your hand) and I'm sure we'll get on fine

Cheers,

    Derek

We are new to caravanning and have found the whole experience wonderful. We have learn't by our mistakes and laughed about them also. We have bought things that we would never need but thought they would be required.

We have also received incredible help from others in time of need and we have also given it to them in there time of need. We also consider ourselves to be your Late 30's early 40's with two young kids, and they also love caravanning.

We never look down on others, but have seen some rather distateful people whom think they are above everyone else, well there not.

Lets enjoy our hobby and interests without predjudice from others, we are afterall here to have a good time. Happy Caavanning one and all.

Ps. We have a Adria Altea 542 UK, so if you see us or any one else that is then say hello and give a smile, as a smile costs nothing.

Dean and Poppy - you're welcome to pitch next to me anytime! (37 here - so not too old lol) Dont let the b******s get to you. If they do look down their noses at you, turn round and ask them if they want a picture of a happy couple with a nice outfit!
My first time in new van over BH weekend - and I gotta tow it and set up on my own as OH working and coming after work - and the new van is huuuuuge compared to my last little 12 footer. Only towed it the once! Fortunately am only using the porch awning as its only a weekend so that bit is easy - 20 mins and its up!
Happy vanning and if you're away over BH have a great time.

If we were pitched next to the young couple, we would say hello and have a chat. We take people as we find them.

We started in 80s when I was 30 and wife 28, we thought we were youngsters too, never had a ny problems meeting people. We generally find campers and caravanners a sociable lot!

I think, as suggested that a lot of it is in the mind.  Pull up at a site and you just KNOW that EVERYONE is watching you. Avoid reversing at costs so as not to give THEM something else to talk about. . Walk all the way arround the site to fill the aquaroll when you realize there is a tap only yards away and EVERYONE saw you do it. Utter a few choice words because the erection of the TV aireal has taken preference to connecting the gas, now EVERYONE knows you are having a barny.Walk into the Ladies instead of the Gents, jeeeez now EVERYONE thinks I am a complete incompetent.

The Truth is they ALL did the same things before you arrived and but you didn't see them.

The first van my wife and I bought was just a few hundred pounds many years ago and we were in our twentys at the time, we have progressed and now in our early 50's with three children later who all love caravanning. In fact the eldest now in her late twentys just married has got her husband to buy them a caravan which he also loves!!

Enjoy yourselves, ignore the miserables who give you the wide berth, my wife and I had the same when we were young but did not let it spoil our enjoyment. It's a lovely way to spend holidays and breaks and something the children also love. If you are ever pitched next to us call in and say Hi the kettle will be on!!
