You don't need a new caravan. We have never had one, and won't be buying one. I don't even buy new cars any more, because I hate to think what it loses, just driving away from the showroom.
Our current caravan is 11 years old. We bought it when it was 5. It is mechanically perfect and has no damp. Four new tyres this year and two external locker lids where the hinges had broken. At the first sign of damp it will go, and will be replaced by another second hand caravan. Damp is not a function of age.
Some people will know about my theory on awnings. If you have ever been sailing, you will know the power of a sail. In anything but a light breeze, the awning will work the awning rail until damp can enter. Might be right, might be wrong.
We have no awning. We have no damp. We will not be getting an awning. That's why we have a large caravan for just the two of us. We have a large 4 x 4. I need that for other things, but I would have it anyway. I've towed all kinds of things with all kinds of vehicles, and I know what feels safer. That's four years old. When it starts to give problems, it will be replaced by another second hand Jeep.
We aren't extravagant, but we could probably do it more cheaply. For us, it's more about freedom and convenience than money.
