I had single axles both old and new for 25 years and for the last 5 years twin axles.
Personally I would not go back to a single now. My wife and I love the extra space, but for me it is a lovely tow. They just feel more stable, particularly when overtaking or being overtaken, that suction feel you get with singles is hardly noticable.
Also the security of two wheels each side, particularly when doing a lot of motorway or autoroute work as we do is comforting. We were coming back from South of France this year from our holiday on the autoroute, and pulled into the nearest services as when putting the window down a bit, I thought I could here a ticking/ tap noise, got out to find one of the tyres nearly flat with 17lb pressure. It had picked up a nail (and yes the tyre, in fact the van was only four months old so tyres were not old or worn).
I wonder what could have happened if that had been a single axle, running at near to full mtplm. Was I glad it still had a fully inflated wheel on that side. A quick change and safely on my way.
As far as the mover, I am afraid I dont agree with Jim, as he said there may be a requirement if you have limited access at home. Well I do, two virtual 90 degree turns on my drive with gate posts in the way and a slope up the drive to get the van on the flat. Like some others on here I could not keep the van at home with cars opposite and the turns, I would be unable to keep it at home. Hence I would not use it as much.
Again I dont agree with Jim on his views about storing it at home, I have lived in the same house for 20 years and we use the van a lot. (far more than if in storage), we keep it powered regularly, put the heating on regularly, I wash it once every 4-6 weeks and polish it a few times a year. If in storage, I wouldnt be as 'keen' LOL.
Even if I did not have the need for a mover at home, I would still have a mover on a twin. (And yes Jim I can reverse very well, I have been in the haulage industry for 30 years). However we must visit different sites Jim, We go to France and Italy with the van and I love being able to place it broadside on the pitch between the trees in shade if I want too, like many do in Europe. There has also been occasions in the UK where I have found it quicker on small piches with limited space opposite ( including where somebody has parked their car half on the grass and half on the road and decided to go out for a walk, making it difficult to get the car hitched witout turning the van at 45 degrees to get hitched up . In which case would mean lugging it sideways, a few feet. So all in all I would always put a mover on a twin just for those eventualities and to use it if more convenient..
In summary its all personal choice and down to what you really want, but if you decide to fit a mover, believe me you wont regret it...
