Hi mrspooter!

Been a busy old day here in not so sunny Norfolk! Spent many minutes weighing stuff, loaded caravan etc. noseweight on van and towbar is 100kg (popped into dealers and was told that caravan is also 100kg, surprisingly! Anyway we settled for a figure of 85kg but despite our best efforts we could only manage 60kg - any more and Billy Basecamp would be doubling as a snow plough...
Regarding the stabiliser I did consider it, but a friend who has the little Xplore said that the same dealership said it wasn't necessary on a small caravan (make of that what you will!) but will still bear it in mind although forking out another £350 will make my Financial Adviser look for a wife with cheaper running costs!
Having sorted the weight out, took it for a run on B roads (around here they are truly dreadful) and up the A11 for a few miles - same issues at low speeds on horrible surfaces but on a good surface and running at 40-55mph it was a dream. Pity it takes 30 mins to get to a decent road here but hey ho!
We did check the tyre pressures - 30 psi - the plate says 39 psi, so will leave it as is although I think a new pressure gauge might be purchased just to be sure.
In other news - my garage will be swapping out the 7 pin for a 13 pin FOC (Witter only supply my type of van with single or dual 7 pin despite caravans all having 13 pins for several years, probably thought a van owner would be towing some ancient trailer or something!) so hopefully with the ATC properly engaged there will be more improvement.
Tomorrow is water supply and heating test day (we did gas today).
Many thanks for all the pooterhelp, much appreciated!

It's getting all very exciting. We are about to take Arthur Caravan on a major trip for a big 2 weeker so we are getting her or him sorted. Nose weight is good as is towing weight. We did change our hitch to a posh thing which makes towing a bit more pleasurable, certainly with the Triumph 2500 saloon. as for everything else, well I have no complaints. I bought a new washing line, and a pantry thing for inside the awning. Such a bonny caravan I cant wait. Last 5 days of the jolly I'm on my own but it's not a problem cos Arthur caravan is so light. As a girlie I do appreciate that

Hi all, New caravanning family.

We did exactly the same as Wenbow, looking at new tents at the NEC, back in February, only difference me & a friend bought a base camp each, got a cracking deal buying two at 6pm on the Sunday evening of the show. Been so excited, we were both supposed to be picking them up from Lincoln this weekend, but a slight delay on ours meant ours will be collected next Saturday 8th July. My friend picked his up yesterday as planned & stayed overnight on a site near the dealer, just in case there was anything else required as we are both new to caravans, transitioning from camping. Unfortunately he noticed when they were sat having a drink that there was daylight round the door seal? Opened the large panoramic window & one of the struts ripped it's mounting out of the frame. The power panel was also loose, which when they went back to the dealer & they checked the power panel it fell out?? As you can imagine this has taken the shine off the whole experience for both of us. Is mine going to suffer the same fate, I am now very nervous. Surely the Swift build quality is better than this, fingers crossed 🤔🤔 My two young boys are also so excited, they will be sleeping in the awning. Or one or two nights we will have some cosy family sleeps in the nice big bed😃👍 Hope the collection goes well next week as the following weekend we are off to Cornwall with it for a weeks holiday🤗

Not sure of the nose weight....hubby deals with technical things. Posh thing is a stabilizer. I'm not sure we really needed one but the nice people said they would put one on for free so thought it would be rude to say no 😁

I'm really sorry to hear about the state of the caravan. We haven't had any issues that you describe but a carefully worded letter to Mr Swift might be the order of the day

Hi 28crewchief
I'm really sorry to hear about your friend's issues with the Basecamp. We've only had some minor issues with ours and they "took the shine off" a bit for me so I can only imagine how you & he must feel. Luckily, we ordered ours in February and were due for a March(?) build. I think Swift have been taken by surprise by the interest in the Basecamp and have possibly rushed through some of the later builds to meet demand.
As a newbie to Caravaning I naively expected everything to be perfect. I know better now!
When we first identified our issues we (in hindsight) rather unfairly blamed the dealer. In fact, the dealer has been very supportive and is working to address our problems.
MrPooter was looking at another site where a chap said there was a list of common faults with new Basecamps: no breadboard, no external shower unit and no wire baskets in the kitchen drawers (which I didn't even realise should be there!). However, your problems are much more extreme than that.
Other issues for us are: loose control panel over the door; poorly fitted kitchen drawer (off the rail on one side as drawer significantly narrower than drawer opening); poor kitchen sink drainage as drainpipe rises underneath sink; one spotlight in lounge doesn't work.
Despite all that, we actually love it!
We are having fun with the awning... we have purchased the Vango but don't want to use it all the time as there are only the 2 of us and the dimensions do make choosing a site a bit more limited. We have purchased a porch awning which was "ok". Next time away we are planning to improve the fit a bit with tarp grabbers (clingons) & suction cups. We'll report back on progress.
The other thing we have had no success with is getting a decent tv picture from the roof mounted "mushroom" aerial. Has anyone else had better luck?
We're going to Haltwhistle at the end of July then we've got 10 nights in Keswick (with the big awning as we could only get a super jumbo pitch for the dates we wanted). We're currently planning an end of September getaway then that might be it for this year (unless we get some exceptionally mild weather over winter).
Once everything settles down I'm sure your friend (& you) will love it as much as we do.

Hi , Sorry to hear of problems with 28crewcheif and hope the problems are getting resolved .
We are taking our first trip this weekend , apprehensive as we are newbies to caravans . The weight issues , nose weight & towing all seems daunting at the moment .
I'd be interested to hear where the wire baskets are supposed to be located along with the chopping board as we haven't got them either !!

Sorry to hear there have been some issues Agree that Swift underestimated demand quite significantly. Didn't know there were supposed to be wire baskets! Only issue we've had was the external shower attachment which our dealer was in the process of chasing up on handover day, which duly arrived at ours a couple of days later. Other than that everything has been tested and checked (windows opened fully etc) with no probs. I reckon caravan builds are similar to cars- Friday builds are supposed to be the most error strewn!

Hi Hardyboys,
The chopping board is supposed to be one of those which fits over the sink... could be useful during food prep. I'm not sure about the wire baskets. Put it this way, I've never looked into a cupboard and thought "That could do with a wire basket in there"!
MrPooter is keen on getting the baskets if they are supposed to be supplied. To be honest, I think they are often a bit of a faff with stuff getting wedged in the mesh or dropping down.
I want the chopping board and the external shower though.

Hi soundgrounder52 , i'm going to contact the dealer regarding board & baskets , although I do agree that I can't see where the baskets would go . As for the shower I asked when we collected the van & the dealer said it was an extra & it was the shower point that was provided, so I don't think I will have much success.
I'll let you know how I get on .

Hi HardyBoys,
That was our dealer's initial response as well. When we picked up the Basecamp we were given a rather daunting, but very useful, owner's manual. It collects together the salient information about most of the supplied appliances (e.g. cassette toilet, oven, fridge) and the caravan itself. In there, it explicitly says that if an external shower point is installed an external shower will be provided. It even gives the exact model.
I can dig out the details if you want. But, if you've got the manual, I'd go for it!

Hi Norfolk Sheep,
Your towing experience sounds similar to ours except we have neither ATC nor a stabiliser hitch. We started to panic a bit on the towing course when everyone else had at least a stabiliser hitch. However, the instructor (who is a full time towing instructor who runs courses for the C&MHC amongst others) took us on one side. He said that there is a perception that a small, light van will get blown about more but that a small van will react less as there is less surface to react to the wind. That's what we're hoping, anyway!
We were expecting to have a strong response to being overtaken by lorries on the motorway (M6 in our case, so quite busy) but, in fact, we didn't really notice anything. We are scrupulous about weight ratios, noseweight, load balancing, towing speed, tyre pressures (car and van) and wheelnut torque so I hope that will minimise the chances of anything untoward happening.

Yep, those niggles as Mrs Pooter (Sandgrounder52) has said are a bit annoying.

One of the things I am annoyed about is the aerial. We purchased a relatively expensive Avtex 218DRS to go with the mushroom aerial that came with the Plus pack. I had considered one of the cheap Amazon alternatives, but wanted trouble free viewing after a day on the fells.

We have not managed to get a picture to stay on screen without breaking up for more than about 10 seconds, and I don't believe it's the Avtex.

This poor reception has been experienced on two trips so far - one at Southport where it is very open so reception should be good, and one at Derwentwater.

Has anyone been successful in getting a good stable picture in the Basecamp?

By the way, we've just noticed that the aerial control box in the wardrobe has fallen down, it's only held on with sticky-backed tape! So check your control boxes aren't coming loose, I think I'll add another strip of sticky-back to mine. Not really a problem but another sign of Swift manufacturing being taken by surprise by the success of the Basecamp.

None of these are putting me off the Basecamp which I love, but they are minor issues which are irritating!
