The key to safe towing (and driving) is to read the road in front, ahead, aside and behind. Slow down for hill descents, slow down or avoid the slip stream of large or fast vehicles. Towing a speed is very hard work and requires concentration and practice and vast experience and knowledge of the roads you are traversing. I can only ditto this myself as I in fact did on page 3 of this thread 03/07/07.
Strax, I also agree on how good the TD5 was as a towcar - however got to offer commiserations over the TD5's track record on reliability.
I did 135k miles in mine and the majority was costly and troubled motoring.
Was I glad to see the back of it.
