Kitchen wire baskets!
MrPooter and I have just been on the phone with our dealer. The Basecamp is going in to have some of our issues sorting out (hooray). The conversation turned to kitchen baskets and, apparently, although our printed Basecamp brochure mentions them they are not in the latest version on the Swift website.
So, if you had your heart set on wire baskets for the kitchen (we didn't) you're probably going to be disappointed!

I wonder whether you can use the fact that if the brochure mentions them they should be available (ditto chopping board)...especially if a Basecamp was ordered before the latest website update

Re the TV - is anyone else going for a converter and running a conventional TV instead? For some reason we seem to have a lot of spare ones although I think the 43 inch might be a bit of a squeeze haha! Once that's rigged I can report back.
Only one snag to deal with - catch on the cupboard was wrongly located so Sir has sorted that out.
Might have a play with the awning tomorrow!

Hmm, think I made a boo boo with the awning Far too big for one person to manage - for starters I can't reach the channel without a step ladder (even Sir with his 6ft plus couldn't reach using the van steps!) Yes, it's huge and gives so much extra space but for just me and one or two dogs it's unmanageable (and I think even my mates at dog shows would be pretty fed up after two or three goes at helping!) So, will be trotting back to the dealers and doing my best helpless female impression in the hope I can get a direct swap for something more useable or even with some spare cash back! I could kick myself, I really could....

EDIT - just had a major brainwave - I already have a Khyam screen house (standard judge's equipment at shows!) which may just work as an extra room (they are very spacious) Obviously it won't attach to Billy but it might just do the job. Will consult with my Technical Expert later!

Hi Norfolk Sheep, Mrs Pooter here,
We were a bit taken aback with the Vango awning as well. Luckily, our first night away was a trial run at a C&MHC site only a mile from our house. We couldn't reach the awning rail either so I had to drive back home & pick up our lightweight aluminium steps. Mind you, I also had to drive back home and pick up the kettle!
Like you, we were surprised how heavy it was and how much effort it took to thread it through the awning rail. (Not because it stuck in the rail, just because we were trying to slide a heavy weight horizontally at full arms' stretch). But... there are 2 of us so we can manage it with some huffing and puffing. I don't think I could do it on my own.
Mr Pooter and I are off to Haltwhistle in a couple of weeks where we are trying our porch awning for the second time, complete with our "clingon and suction cups" modifications.
If you look at the thread called "Swift Basecamp - Essex owners" I have gone into a bit more detail about what we plan to do. If it would be useful, I could post some photos (I think!), when we get back, showing what we did and you could consider whether a porch awning might suit you.
We put it up at Derwentwater in good weather and it was light, quick, easy to put up and did the job. The only issue was the gaps at the sides and base. That is what we are hoping to address next time we put it up.

Hi Mrs Pooter,

Yep, it really is a struggle tbh, not to mention the fact that I'll never fit onto a standard dog show size pitch in a million years!

However, I am this morning spitting feathers AND nails, having been told by the dealer that Swift won't take back the awning (and by the sound of it neither will they). I will be phoning Swift customer service to get an explanation as I will definitely NOT be using it, and if anyone thinks I'm going to settle for being almost £800 out of pocket they are sadly mistaken...

Will look at the Essex owners thread, thank you!

Hi
We’ve just returned from a six week trip with our Basecamp. Through the tunnel, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany to Denmark, over the bridge to Sweden, Stockholm, Oslo in Norway then slowly home via a longer stay near Amsterdam.
Apart from some very minor niggles the Basecamp is great. Towing was no problem – although fuel consumption inevitably poor when driving into strong headwind!
We particularly enjoyed using our bikes where the infrastructure and attitude to bikes is properly considered.
The awning big and heavy to erect but worth using when staying a few nights, we had no real problem fitting it into the provided pitches.
TV arial worked fine although we mainly watched recorded material as we can only understand English.
This was our first major trip with a caravan and was a great experience and will be planning the next one soon.

Wow! That was a trip and a half
Glad you had a good time and everything went well
Had no trouble getting a signal on the TV (a Technika) via mains and under our barn roof!
Update on awning debacle - checked Vango website and they will do a full refund via "the fulfiller" i.e. the caravan dealership, so am awaiting further developments

Looks like I'm £800 out of pocket
Swift said (correctly) that the contract was with the dealership, the dealership have now said Swift will not authorise the return (yeah, they told me that, duh!)
Vango's website says that they accept returns within 30 days via the "fulfiller" (assume that means dealership?) but dealership says that's only for online purchases direct from Vango. So who is the fulfiller in this case - Swift? Confused and cross
I cannot believe that I've been completely blocked from returning an item, fit for purpose or not - or in my case not fit for purpose if the purpose is to have an erectable useable awning....

Hi Norfolk Sheep
I'm sorry to hear that your awning issue doesn't look like being resolved as you would hope. I hope it doesn't spoil your excitement in your new van.
You may be able to sell the Vango secondhand at some point in the future. In the interim, it sounds like your Khyam screen house is a viable alternative which won't cost you any additional money.
Mr Pooter and I did consider not purchasing the Vango but we thought that (if / when we come to resell the van) future buyers might want the bespoke awning. Not much consolation now, I know, but it might increase saleability in the future.
I hope you are still able to enjoy time away in the van.

Does the Sale of Goods Act not apply in this case? If not, why not?

If it is not fit for purpose, write them a letter telling them you are rejecting the product under the terms of SAGA, inform them that you expect a response within 10 days, tell them that you will initiate a Small Claims Court proceeding if you are not given a full refund. This is what the Act is for. Terms and conditions imposed by manufacturers do not supersede the law.

The only potential problem I see is that if you have already used it for some time, you may be deemed to have accepted the product to all intents and purposes.

Thanks for the reply
I've contacted Vango to se if they can shed any light on the matter - their automated response says "For immediate assistance regarding a Warranty complaint or a return; please contact the retailer from whom you purchased this from and they can advise further and liaise directly with ourselves throughout the procedure." The problem is that neither Swift nor the dealership seem to accept the responsibility of being the retailer!
The awning was literally out of its bag for a maximum of 2hrs, probably less.
I'll look into the Sale of Goods Act a bit further!

Well, that's easy. The entity to which you paid your money is the retailer, so in this case it will be the dealership. This is defined by law, and not something that the dealer can avoid.

I suspect that once you have made them aware that you are serious, and not just a typical pushover customer, they will be quick to refund you. You may wish to remind them that in a small claims case any costs incurred are paid by the defendant. All your correspondence should be in writing, of course.

A quick Google throws up this link, with a useful letter-writing tool:
http://www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights/advice/what-do-i-do-if-i-have-a-faulty-product

EDIT: apparently I'm a couple of years out of date - the Sale of Goods Act was superseded by the Consumer Rights Act in 2015, but the intent and coverage seem to be equivalent and the approach much the same.

I think you're going to struggle to get your money back as you simply changed your mind - it wasn't faulty. The dealer may give you a credit note or swap but I don't think they're under any obligation.

Presumably it's the awning without the bedroom pod? I think that's the 2018 model. (If it has the pod we may be interested).

Good luck with the dealer.

We had our first trip in Ossie & got on quite well considering it was our very first caravan experience . For us , the awning is definitely a 2 person job but we found it fairly straightforward to put up with the aid of our lightweight step ladder !
However , we are not planning to use the awning on short trips so have been looking for alternatives & have found a sun canopy which looks like it will fit our requirements . The web site is : caravancanopyshop.co.uk & then search Ultra Light , the canopy is demonstrated fitted to a Swift Basecamp in one of the photos . Having spoke to the owner I have ordered one which will arrive tomorrow. Apparently I am the 4th Basecamp owner to order one . We will be trying it out at the end of the month at the Womad festival .
External shower unit & bread board soon to arrive 😀

Happy caravaning everyone.

Just back from Silverstone and Arthur was truly on form. No electricity so worked on gas and the solar panel for 5 days. Worked perfectly in every way. I was so cosy and was really pleased with myself for managing it all on my own. I did have a problem working the hot water so I rang husband and he worked it out on the app at home and sent it over the ether....how clever is that!!!??. I have managed the awning on my own. The art is to lift the bulk of the awning on your shoulder, stand on the step or ladders and then slide the thing on to the awning rail for at least a foot. Then have a little rest. Once the awning is on the rail the rest is really easy and very quick, took me less then 15 mins on my own to blow up the awning and peg it out which is a lot quicker then our old awning which was ten times heavier and was a swine to put up with poles all over the place. So all is good and I had loads of admirers. Very proud
