Whatever happened to being a country of choice and freedom the government will bully us into electric by taxing out fosil fuel, electric will work for some and fosil will work for others why not just have both if say 50% of drivers go electric the pollution from diesel and petrol choices will be down by 50% also

Now that's a sensible comment!

I believe that the majority voted to be out of the EU? You have ignored all my other arguments about the current issues for people who are genuinely going to be seriously disadvantaged over current policies.

You all seem to be assuming that everything will stay the same and then suddenly change overnight one day in 2040. That simply won't be the case. Electric cars are being used now and their use is increasing all the time. As more are used, charging facilities will also increase.

Then technology will further evolve. Now they are plugged in to charge. They might be charged by induction charging located in every parking place.

Then smart charging may come in to stagger the charging periods. With the increasing use of solar PV etc there will be surplus power available at different times. How about setting your car to urgent, medium or non urgent need for charging with varying levels of cost per kw. Then the system can charge the urgent ones first then the medium then the non urgent. Bear in mid most cars will only need a sip of electric to top them up rather than a full charge so might only be given 30 minutes charge but be parked there for 6 hours.

Then our usage will change. Some will tow a heavy caravan 300 miles each way to Cornwall for a holiday but only because they can. If roads and cars are not suitable for this, maybe they will go somewhere closer or use a fixed caravan or cabin or yurt or whatever.

For all those who have not driven an electric car, I would say go and have a test drive. You will be very pleasantly surprised at just how good they are to drive.

Navver, no I'm not forgetting about improvements and changes. Just saying that there is no way many of us will necessarily live to see these changes and/or be able to afford them yet we're already being clobbered by taxes. A second car is pie in the sky to me now, let alone an EV.

Regenerative braking is in it’s infancy,in a recent test a Nissan leaf was driven up a 2400 m mountain and on the way down it regained 11points,it is impossible to regain all it’s charge but utilising the technology will increase it’s range.
Anyone who even thinks they can drive a given distance and then regain enough energy to return must live on cloud cuckoo land!
When Land Rover’s competitors start producing all electric 4x4s and start taking a large share of the market L/R may reconsider.

The queues at the likes of Trago Mills are only because the fuel is cheaper,I expect that between where you live and Trago Mills you will have driven past many filling stations with nobody there.Your assumption that huge queues will form at filling stations ignores the fact that with an ICE powered caryou can only fill up at a filling station whereas a large proportion of motorists will be able to recharge at home their workplace or some other facility.
People talk as though they are doing hundreds of miles every week whereas according to gov figures 6% of all trips are less than 1 mile,50% are less than 5 miles and 38% are less than 25 miles, only 6% of all trips are in excess of 25 miles.

saxo1

First of all shame on those who 6% who drive less than a mile disabled and elderly excluded, next 6% drive over 25 miles just how many miles over 25 miles are we talking personaly I drive around 500 per week I have suppliers to me who drive around 60k per year. So a delivery driver doing lots of miles will take longer to complete their work therefore being hourly paid the cost to deliver will rise this rise will affect every single person. You said in another post people drive about 21 miles per day I don't know anyone who does this, last week a guy on the radio said he lives 75 miles from a supermarket he will have to recharge his Nissan leaf during shopping just to get home. Finally once the government has tucked you all up into going electric the cost to charge will be way higher than diesel or petrol will ever be

My wife drives on average 8.6 miles a day, she’s covered 15500 miles in her car since new 5years ago, you might not know her but I do

The UK is still in the EU and are bound by EU directives, the vote to leave has no relevance yet.
I don't know what other issues you are talking about, all the problems you have highlighted are based on today's technology and current vehicle limitations do you seriously think that by 2040 the vehiles and technology won't have advanced?

My wife gave her15 year old car to her nephew it had 23000 miles on the clock.
The vast majority of drivers that live where I live(in rural somerset) work within a 10 mile radius of my village.
The average mileage figures I quoted are government statistics, there will always be a few who drive a lot further but they are far outweighed by those who drive fewer miles.
The average declared mileage for private motorists for insurance purposes is 10000 miles but the insurance industry are quite happy because they make more profit.
UK gov figures put the average private mileage at app 7900 miles.
A lot of over 70s don't drive 21 miles in a week,my next door neighbour is one!

Just worked out that I average 170 miles a week. However, that's an average, and some weeks I do many more miles than others especially while I'm on holiday. For instance I've done nearly 600 miles in the past 2 weeks. Then other weeks I hardly go anywhere.

If I could afford 2 cars I would love an EV, but in my financial circumstances - no chance! An EV would be fine for most of my driving locally, but I can only afford to buy cars once they are over 10 years old, and somehow I can't imagine any EV still being usable after 10 years unless it has just had replacement batteries.

Best Regards,
Colin

My current car is a diesel and has hit 230km. It is 9 years old. I do over 500km a week. I have no charging point at work and no charging point at home and I go hillwalking in areas where there are no charging points. I will be trading my car in for another diesel estate, probably an A4 before the new year.
I would love to have an EV but I don't think they have one that fits my lifestyle yet.

That is exactly the point Ewen, you cannot stick everyone in the same box.

I NEED 4x4, I NEED high ground clearance, I NEED to tow at least 2 Tonne, I NEED to be able to carry 5 people and three dogs with push chair etc.

It is going to be decades before an EV that suits my needs at a sensible price is available Please don’t tax me for where I live and my lifestyle. That’s prejudice to people who live in a rural environment.

Colin, Tesla batteries will last the lifetime of the car, current estimate is around 5000k miles, 60 years for the battery pack, before it dies completely.

Tesla also give an 8 year unlimited mileage warranty on the battery pack to still be at 80% capacity.

You don't know that, and more to the point neither does Testla. It's all a guessing game and a bit of smoke and mirrors!

I predicted (page 1) that this thread should stimulate a lot of discussion!

Can I just ask, anyone contributing on here or watching actually got a hybrid/battery rechargeable car, and do you tow a decent sized caravan with it?
