If the cotton is breaking it sounds like the tension is too tight.Or maybe not threaded correctly. try rethreading it and practice on a scrap of fabric turning the tension knob or wheel until you get it right. Can be a pain to get it just right. Different settings for different fabrics.Inside the tension adjuster is a series of washers and a spring, controlled by the knob which determines how fast the cotton comes through to the needle .
I took my machine out of years of hibernation and it took me several hours oiling it, cleaning the fluff out of the insides and fiddling with the tension to get it working properly.

Use a steel tape measure ( a household diy one )as the vinyl dressmakers ones can stretch a bit.

Start with a straight edge, fold fabric in half so the manufactured edges along the length are meeting properly , then trim across the width so that it is straight

Then measure and mark the length you need with chalk or a pen at intervals . Keep it Folded in half and check its the same length all the way along . both ends and the middle .
Chalk can be hard to get an accurate line with , I used a light coloured felt pen and marked a few dots.

when you are happy that you have it in a straight line, cut through the double thickness of the folded fabric

Its usual to fold fabric in half and cut it out double thickness for speed and convenience.
then use this piece as the guide for the next curtain.

Pressing your hems and turnings in place before sewing saves using lots of pins to hold them down under the machine.
Pin the hem up , iron, remove pins then turn down a smaller hem on what you have already pressed, pin, press , remove pins and sew along this second crease. No raw edges showing .

Debbie thanks a million for that, it would never have occured to me to fold the fabric at all, I had it spread out flat on the flat on the floor which made it so difficult to deal with, good job I bought loads of fabric, the ones that turn out not so good I can thow away, I want to end up with nice looking curtains so am determined to get it right :-)

Don't throw the fabric away , make it into scatter cushions . don't worry if you dont feel ready to tackle zips yet, you can make them like pillowcases, or sew the last side up completely once its on the cushion.

Definitely not up to zips yet lol, scatter cushions are a good idea though, think I might get the sewing machine serviced soon I got it 2nd hand so dont really know if its been looked after or not, think it might need to be oiled and I can see some bits of cotton threads stuck inside it so that might be causing probs to, there is a machine servicing place near me I'll put it into then get going properly again.

Hello again!

Debbie, you're clearly a mine of information so please prepare for a good brain picking! I want to remove the old covers because they're really thick velvet and have a very deep pile so the pattern that's stitched onto them could make the new covers look lumpy. But I like the idea of drawing round the end pieces to make a pattern - will deffo be stealing that idea.

Dacron is polyester wadding, cheap as chips (I usually use it when I'm making a quilt)and you wrap it round the foam to soften the edges and make it look fuller inside the new covers (she says, sounding like an expert but frantically para-phrasing from Google) Someone else replied to me (I'm sorry, I didn't make a note of your name but you know who you are - Thank you!) and said not to allow any extra when cutting the new fabric because the fabric will eventually stretch a bit anyway. Sounds good to me.

My next question is did you just oversew the open back seam or is there some special upholsterers stich that I should use?

I've got 10m of fabric. I need to make 3 long seat cushions, 1 long low back rest and 2 backrests which are basically hardboard covered in wadding with fabric stapled over one side, these are then fixed to the walls (I hope that makes sense) Does that sound like it could be enough - I'm totally prepared to use some other material for the underside if needs be but I;m starting to worry that I might have cut it a bit fine, so to speak.

Thanks again everyone, as soon as I've got something to show I'll post some photos.

Kelly

I zigzagged the edges of the back seam first to stop fraying (chenille frays a lot)and made a tiny hem on the edge and just sewed the two edges together with a small slanting stitch like hemming a trouser leg. No idea what the stitch would be called tbh, but it was fairly unnoticeable.

My long cushions were about 52 inches long so they fitted across the width of my 54 inch wide fabric. Maybe yours will be this size, but perhaps they will be longer than mine, as I have also got a smaller cushion that adds on the end of them as well.

I'm guessing yours will be longer than mine to make a 6ft bed length up, so would have to be cut along the length of the fabric. In this case I think you will have to use seoerate fabric for the underside.

to work out if you have enough fabric, tape some sheets of newspaper or wallpaper together.
measure the depth of the tops of the cushions, starting from the back base seam , go up and across the top and down over the knee roll to the front of the base.add one inch for seam allowances.
measure the length and mark on the paper and cut it out.
Do the same for the backrest cushions.and the side panels

place the paper patterns on to see which way you could fit them on . It may be possible to fit a cushion and a backrest side by side, all according to how wide the fabric is .

working on the estimate they are all about 2 metres long, if you can fit them side by side there will be plenty, taking up about 6m for the 3 sets , plus approx another metre or so for the 6 side panels.

if you cant fit them on side by side then you will have a lot of waste .
the 3 base cushions will take up 6m,but only about just over half the width of fabric.
then 2 backrests side by side another 2m , the 3rd backrest another 2m .making 10 altogether
so you should have just enough . with all the excess left from the base cushions for side panels , curtain tiebacks, and button coverings.

this was the youtube video I saw, there are 5 videos from the same company , interesting to see how they do it at the factory . may be useful for you to see how they applied the dacron onto the fabric first , as you are used to doing quilting .also shows backrests like you have too on one of the videos.

Thanks Debbie  - the videos were great, I understood all the tips and instructions on this thread but it's great to see it all going together too. I'll no doubt have more questions as I go along but for now I'm off to get stuck into it all. I'll be back with photos if I make a success of it (if I louse it all up obviously you'll never hear from me again!)  Thanks a lot, Kelly

I like this thread to, have finished making some dog duvets to practise my newly aquired skills, they have quite a few mistakes but the dogs dont seem to mind lol, I wanted to really get the hang of the machine so I thought I would stop doing the curtains for a few days and work on something thats less important (I mean stop ruining good curtain fabric) so I bought a load of remnants and bits of fabric and made six simple dog duvets so far, I chopped up a budget duvet and sewed the edges then made the covers for them, dogs love em :-)) am going to put them in my profile so you can tell me what you think :-)

<DIV>Debbie that looks great its so worth doing, mine is finished and I'm really pleased with how it looks.
<DIV>We have been away for a week and forgot to take the flipping camera and put it back in storage on the way home so will have to wait until we pop down next to take some photographs.
<DIV>Hubby has  decided that he wants to re spray the outside now so I will take some of the outside for before and after.
<DIV>Sue.

Looking forward to seeing pics.
blimey , respraying the outside as well , I'm impressed .
I have to replace lots of window stays , but the price is putting me off doing them, LOL.
Its annoying that the struts are all okay , just the plastic brackets that attach to inside the caravan have snapped ,I did try superglue but it didnt hold them for long. I can't find these seperately for my struts as they are the autostays , not the tube ones with the screw adjuster.
I have decided that DS can start on resealing the awning rails too at the end of the summer too.

I have studied the fixed it clubs instructions and pictures and I think he is well capable of doing that for me.
Hi Debbie, we were thinking of getting a newer caravan but reading some of the horror stories on here about newer vans leaking ect we thought it made more sense to refurbish ours as its solid and bone dry, the inside is looking great just need to get some laminate to redo the work tops and re spray the outside and the jobs a good un as they say.
Regarding your brackets have a look around the caravan breakers  this may be of help.

Sue.

Papadore they look great ,well done . Thats just what you needed to do , have a good practise to give you confidence to tackle the curtains by getting used to the machine first. Curtains are basically a matter of keeping to straight lines , but the keeping it straight takes a bit of practise to begin with.

I did the same sort of thing myself, after not using the machine for years. I cut a duvet cover up and made loads of pillowcases out of it.I think it also helped to sort of run the machine in first after cleaning and oiling it as it hadn't been used for a long time .the more I used it the easier it seemed to run.

Blackice, you're right , it does makes sense to stick with what you have and improve it. Thanks for the link for the breakers too.

Thanks Debbie, the dogs think its Christmas with an extra duvet each lol, I seem to have the machine working a bit better now, the thread isnt snapping so much, I lowered the tension a tad so thats helped, will finish up all the remnant material and then go back to the curtains, I must say you can get some lovely remnants around that are quite big pieces and only paying a few quid for them means if a mistake is made its of no great consequence, taken all the pressure off now :-)

You're lucky being able to find remnants. We have only one fabric shop in town which is expensive and never has any remnants .We used to have a great market stall with cheap remnants , and I would always be buying cheap bits off there .
Thats part of the reason I gave up sewing i think , never any cheap bits and bobs to catch my eye and make me think of a use for it.
I was also shocked a how much things like thread , curtain tape , buttons and other haberdashery bits have gone up since I gave up sewing.

You say the thread is still snapping ? Is it happening often , is it happening when you start off sewing , or in the middle of a seam?.
Are your stiches tight and pulling or lying nice and flat .with no loops on top or underneath.
You really need to get this sorted before doing the curtains I think.
If its snapping when you start off, try turning the wheel at the side of the machine that moves the needle up and down so that the needle is up at its highest point before you start to sew.
Or try adjusting the stitch length perhaps.
It could be a bit of fluff or cotton stuck inside somewhere that is catching on the thread and breaking it too.
take the casing off, and have a look inside ,it all comes apart and just screws back on .

clean any bits of fluff or threads away.
look inside the bobbin holder, thread could be stuck in there too.
have you oiled the machine ? If not, oil any moving parts while the casing is off , and then do loads of practising on scrap to run the oil through so its all come through before you start on your curtain fabric.
