I think every caravan is going to be a compromise, you just have to decide what is priority and what isn't. Compared to the average home any caravan is a tiny space to live in, particularly with a family, and the chances of finding one that is perfect in every respect is going to be nigh impossible unless you have one custom-built.

Everyone's needs and wants are different, so finding the perfect one is difficult. We, for instance, never take a TV with us so it is not a priority, but fitting one in our caravan wouldn't be easy anyway. We would have to sacrifice something else. But we go away with the caravan to get away from TV (among many other reasons) as we probably watch far too much of it at home. We mainly use the caravan for sleeping in and some meals, as we try and get out and about exploring as much as possible. If the weather's bad we sit and read or sometimes play board games. But then we are retired and there is only the two of us.

Colin

Fully agree, but we have Kids and our youngest is on the list to be assessed for ADHD, and we try and keep him off tech as much as possible, we can only play board games for so long until he loses interest.

Having the ability to watch a TV is great as we can all sit down and watch a film, and it manages to keep his focus long enough.

We both have physical limitations and also now find board games boring as done them all in our youth. Find watching TV relaxing and helps pass the time on rainy days especially if you have kids.

When our kids were young the campsites that we used had very little to offer for kids and we did not have TV with us, but in those days kids wandering off under the supervision of one of the older kids was not a problem. Obviously you cannot do that these days!

Yes, as I said, everyone's wants and needs are different. Things were different for us years ago when we had our kids in the caravan, but back then having a TV wasn't the option it is today. TVs were huge, expensive and only ran on mains, which simply wasn't available on most sites. Our "kids" now have kids of their own, and even some of them are adults now, so things have changed as time has gone on. Our caravan would be no good now if we still had young kids, but it suits us perfectly. Our grandkids have never shown any interest in camping or caravanning, even though their parents once enjoyed it.

Fortunately both of us love reading, so before we go away anywhere we just get a couple of extra books out of the library.

i wouldnt be so quick to put yourself or your caravan down Colin, there are plenty of kids who camp in one form or another (i.e. tent caravan or motorhome) that camp just as we used to do. you go on a rally and there are hundreds of kids around esp on the temporary holiday sites, no computors no tvs and only phones as long as there battery holds out! lol!
we are off on sunday for a week with our grandkids and they cant wait to go, so much so that they came back from spain last weekend and their mum couldnt get the washing done as they where packing for coming with us!

Nothing wrong with our caravan as far as we are concerned Marg6. It suits the pair of us perfectly. It would actually suit many young families too really, except that it is quite small by today's standards. It has two long seats at the front, which can be either full length single beds as we usually have them, or one large double going crossways. Across the back is a small dinette that makes down into bunk beds, and would readily suit two young children, or even one smallish teenager. It has a curtain that could be drawn across to shut the bunks off from the rest of the caravan.

Sadly none of our grandkids has shown the slightest interest in coming camping with us, but out of 7 of them 3 are now adults, two with their own daughters, one boy is 17, another 13, and the youngest is age 4. Perhaps our great-granddaughters might show an interest when they get a bit older.

Our caravan, although 31 years old now, has everything we could possibly need. Apart from air-con and a microwave I can't think of anything the latest ones have that ours doesn't. It's positive luxury compared to the first two we had back in the 1970s. Neither of them even had cold running water until I fitted it. Definitely no electricty!

I think someone mentioned earlier its about £2k

It can also be noisy - especially for your neighbours! We just sleep with the rooflights, and possibly a window open, and have a fan opposite us at the foot of the bed. IF we were doing a lot of 'hot weather' (abroad camping), i may possibly look at it. But it think its something to spend money on when you have run out of other ideas, for the UK.

No idea what a 'tyrepal' is. But if its something to tell you that you have a flat tyre, you shouldnt really be driving, if the 'feel' of the outfit doesnt tell you this already. Another gizmo to spend money on when you dont have to!

Tyrepal is fitted to most modern cars nowadays it tells you if a tyre is not at the correct pressure before it gets to the stage where it affects the vehicle handling.
On a caravan an under inflated tyre can lead to overheating and a blowout without you knowing it was under inflated.

As I understand it Tyrepal is a pressure monitoring device. It allows you to tell if the pressure is decreasing in a tyre, not that it has blown. It is designed to warn you before you have a flat tyre, not tell you when you have one. I think that's right anyway, I don't actually have one.

Just how our first two caravans were. I fitted a basic 12 volt system to each of them, a water tank, and an electric pump to a tap at the sink. A button next to the tap operated the pump. I rigged up a charging system to top up the onboard battery from the car while we were travelling, as few sites in those days had mains electricity.

Both those caravans had gas lighting, I well remember having to replace the mantles every time we set up on site, but I had fitted small 12 volt fluorescent lights to supplement them. Neither of those caravans had a toilet or shower, we simply relied on the site facilities as we had done when we had a tent.

We have air con and even at full blast you can hardly hear it when sitting outside so chances of neighbours hearing it are very low. Anyway why run an air con at full blast when you can set it to about 20C and the thermostat switches it on and off as required. At night we have it on low and have no issue sleeping as it is definitely not noisy.

As for your remark regarding having a flat tyre you are way off beam. If you have a twin axle and have a puncture in one of the tyres there is no way that you will know. Even on a single axle it would be hard to discern a slow puncture until the tyre blows at which point you will know that you have an issue. A Tyrepal would advise you that the tyre is below pressure so that you can react and resolve any issue before the tyre blows.

Our 2018 does not have a Tyrepal and I doubt if any modern car will have a Tyrepal fitted as no need. Modern cars will have their own Tyre Pressure Monitoring System and not a Tyrepal. Maybe you are using the incorrect terminology?

We have Aircon, it came with our nearly new caravan. We only use it in very hot weather and never at night, but then, we haven't been abroad for years.

Tyrepal is fitted to most modern cars nowadays it tells you if a tyre is not at the correct pressure before it gets to the stage where it affects the vehicle handling.
On a caravan an under inflated tyre can lead to overheating and a blowout without you knowing it was under inflated.

Our 2018 does not have a Tyrepal and I doubt if any modern car will have a Tyrepal fitted as no need. Modern cars will have their own Tyre Pressure Monitoring System and not a Tyrepal. Maybe you are using the incorrect terminology?

Correct, I was mainly referring to Tyrepal for caravans as opposed to TPMS for cars which effectively does the same thing.
