Hi, Les.  Tzar Livingstone has put 0% congestion charge on hybrid cars.  Those of us with movers could therefore take them into the zone for free.  Unhitch just outside zone, then go in on the movers.  When batteries run flat, send for the breakdown trucks. Result, Mayhem!

For Richard.  The government and Livingstone are now financially targetting 4x4's.  As they already pay in fuel usage, I am wondering if any EU discriminatory laws are being breached.

Regarding taxing them off the road, I think many people, who need 4x4's for the largest vans, will be forced to down grade to either a smaller vehicle, or even smaller car and van.  Larger families, who need the bigger vans, could be denied the pleasures of caravanning.

Very worrying, is the possibility that people will keep the large van, but move to a smaller vehicle.  Even if towing regulations are not specifically broken, the overall effect could be that towing safety is marginalised. (i.e; more accidents involving the larger vans).

And we are being kidded that these penalties are esential for the benefit of the planet, when we all know it is another ploy to justify further taxation.

And when we have all been taxed off the road, you can bet your sweet life we will see no change in the CO2 and global warming problems.   Remember the hike in National Insurance that was going to solve the NHS problems?  The NHS is now in bigger trouble than before that hike.

Well, if farmers are forced to abandon battery hen cages, there will be plenty of cheap, luxurious hen coups on the market!

Bertie.

Does anyone else find it frightening for our childrens future that we have damaged this planet more in the last 200 years than nature has done in millions of years?

I dont know about the end of caravanning, but will the planet survive?

Unless a meteor hits us, I think the planet will survive. Whether or not it will be inhabited by anything other than cockroaches and microbes.... think the jury's out on that one.

Since man developed forward-looking "intellegence" there have been the so-called experts who preach catastrophies for the future, but nothing happens when we get there.  I agree that we should act responsibly, but the knee jerk solutions currently being bandied about are as ridiculous as doing nothing.  The global warming from CO2 emissions has been gradual, and reversing the effect will also have to be gradual, bearing in mind that nobody has proven how much of the emissions are a result of natural forces.  Don't let anyone fool you that all man made CO2 has been precisely measured.  The latest claim is that we are turning the seas to acid by their absorption of CO2.  When you consider the volume of sea water, how have they managed to measure that?   Remember the acid rain problem of a few years ago? We don't hear much about that now do we?

As for the boffins, well, it's only about 100 or so years ago that they claimed human beings would disintegrate if they travelled at more than 20 mph., and we know now that this prediction was a long way out.

Its not just CO2 thas the problem.  We are destroying the forests that help regulate the atmosphere.  At the end of the day it won't be the end of caravanning, but caravanning might just have to adapt and produce lighter vans.  Even 6 berth vans could be made light enough to be towed by family saloons.  Necessity is the mother of invention.

Hi, Just a point,

Livingstone has said he wants to bring in these charges in 2008. He is due for re-election before then, so the people will have their say.

I do not agree with all his policies but I have to admire his dedication and the fact that you know where you are with Ken.

An honest politician...now there's a thing!

Mr Ulti-Mate

Point taken, but being honest doesn't mean always being correct.  You can be bigoted without being dishonest.

Browsing through several web sites with global warming content, I came across one which said how many trees you should plant to absorbyour share of CO2.  You entered your fuel costs, emmission rating for your car, average m.p.g., and miles per year. The automatic calculator said that I should plant 7 trees.    If I can find that site again, I will post it on here.

Bertie.
