Hi we are looking to go to a site that doesnt have any electric hook up on the dates we want. Dont mind except for wondering about the tv we take. This is a newish flat screen portable that has a normal house plug one end and then passes thrpugh a transformer that makes it 12volt to tv . ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, does this mean it can be used on caravan 12 volt and if so how do you plug it in when on battery only

OR AM I BEING THICK AND IT CANT BE USED !!!!!!!!!!!! really have no idea

It would drain the battery quickly if not on EHU.

Also some are very particular on exact voltage, so you may need to use an inverter and plug the TV transformer into that.

I purchased a 9.2 inch widescreen portable dvd player with built in analogue tuner and also a freeview tuner. It is designed to use low power and run off any 12 volt supply as it comes with a 12 volt cigarette lighter attachment. Its built in battery will last for approx 1.5 hours. The unit uses approx 1A power unlike a 15 inch lcd tv which uses approx 4-5 amps.

For example

This means a 100 AH leisure battery will play the 15inch TV for 20-25 hours if thats all you use the battery for but the portable player/TV will play for 100 hours.

We have found this player great for long weekends on certified location sites without electric. I wouldn't chance it with the larger lcd tvs unless you don't mind charging the battery from your car if its gets close to flat.

What you need to run a 12v tv from battery is a stabiliser, unless there is one already built in.

An invertor is a device which converts 12V to 240V.    That stabiliser looks good though.

There is a big chance you will damage your TV if you dont use a stabiliser. Unless you paid abouut £300/400 which will have it built in. The minimum that will happen is the volts will drop to about 10.5v and the TV will just not work.

MrAB :

I'm interested in buying a combined DVD player & TV for use in a caravan - any chance of letting us know the make / model that you bought ?  Are you satisfied with it ?

Thanks

Geoff

Lidl have one of those 'under cupboard' LCD/DVD/TV/Freeview/radio/etc, etc, players on offer for £99. SEE HERE
It includes an AC/DC adaptor which suggests that it will run off 12V...
I've got a similar one by ODYS which has a bigger screen. List price about £250. I got it for £34 off Ebay. It didn't work (I knew that when I bought it!) but I emailed the manufacturers and they sent me a replacement voltage regulator circuit board for free! It's this voltage regulator board that will fail if the supply voltage is not stable. I also had to buy a new power supply for the machine as the one that came with it was only rated at 500mA when it should be 10 times more 'pokey' at 5A. I reckon that's why it was broken - the previous owner had tried to run it off an adaptor that couldn't deliver the power required to run it.
