hi

please help us, we have just bought a sterling europa 490 and in love with it.  The only problem is thetwo big cupboard doors above the oven, they won't stay open. The stays are less than useless and can become very dangerous when trying to put things away.  Looked everywhere for replacements or alternatives but have had no success.  The other thing is the lack of shelving in the cupboards there is notches for shelving to be put in there, but no shelving supplied or available. Hope someone can direct us in the right direction to be able to sort our problem out.

On my caravan the cupboard stays were adjustable , there was a screw on the bottom ( inside ) the stay that could be turned in or out to adjust the pressure on the spring .

your local caravan shop will have all sorts of after-fit stays. One will fit.

Our problem is doors flying open on the move!

I fitted the round push buttons to some of our cupboard doors (like the toilet door but smaller).They are very neat and secure

I've found 2  9in long stays with plastic sliders so we are off to fit them on our friends van and will report on the result/method used later !!!

A stay was mounted to the inside of the plastic cupboard frame (Swift) using a wooden spacer 1cm wide X4cm long X 1cm thick approx.

The screws really gripped well in the plastic

It was fitted just above and along the ridge half way up from front to back of the cupboard side using self tapping screws into the plastic and through pre drilled holes in the spacers.

The stay was then retracted and a small piece of tape mastic lightly placed on the end

The door was then closed and the mastic transferred to the door showing the exact position to fasten the end bracket.

The same method was used on the other kitchen roof locker

The door was hollow at that point so trim tape was stuck to the end of the bracket before screwing it on.

If the fixing to the door loosens at all then pop rivets could be used instead of screws.

thanks all for your help.  I will pass them on to hubbie.  You would think that the new vans would be more sturdy than the older ones, but our previous swift challenger 520 se   was solid as a rock.

Hi.

We have the same problem with our Abbey. The doors above the oven will not stay open. Just be carefull when you put your things away. My Husband has had 3 or 4 nasty  cuts to his  head when the door just drop quickly. I now carry lots of sticking plasters.

Our Dealer has been really great trying  to solve the problem for us. They have just tried something else. we will wait and see how long this will work.

Just love the Abbey Van  but would think really hard  before we buy the next van.
