Welcome to the club. It is addictive and you will have lots of fun and of course arguments re the awning. It is obligatory to provide this entertainment for the rest of the site when you arrive but at least when you are away for two weeks, it is your turn for the entertainment on the middle weekend. I'll second that! Lots of debates going on.
However, I do not want to be a spoilsport, but please do not tell your non vanning friends how good it is. It is getting harder and harder just to "go off" like we used to do as most good sites are booked up at the weekends. Again, agree, was gutted to read in the Sunday paper a big article telling how popular caravanning is - Noooooooooo!!!!!!!
So keep it a secret and enjoy with a little secret smile. They will wonder what is going on and it will only add to your mystery.
There was an article in our local paper about camping and caravanning .... and MY DAD was featured!!! Wait till I see him - I will be having SERIOUS words about him telling the world and his wife about the secret. It's just not on! I don't care if he's on C&CC National Council - it's still not on!!!

We are same - started with tent 4 years ago and now OH is thinking of selling his beloved ST170 (not that he towed trailer with it) for a 4x4. Never thought he would be seen towing a caravan - but just let him think it was his idea all along!
We had trailer tents and folding campers for almost twenty years and were very happy with what we had - the work was just part of what we did. Three years ago we were in Scotland when the conditions were horrendous. It rained heavily constantly for days and was wierdly warm into the bargain - causing mould to start on the roof of the folding camper (something we'd never experienced as we took great care of our canvas). Our pitch was under water and eventually wet started to seep through some stitching. Packing up was an art ensuring that no-one fell in the mud. We started to look at motor homes and spent a long time at the NEC studying what they could offer on the budget we had. We became aware that what we could afford would not provide comfortable seating for our 2 children (spoilt by years of travelling in a Ford Galaxy) and that one would constantly be sick. At that point OH said "Well we haven't looked at caravans yet." He had always said he would NEVER tow a caravan. The first year had its moments however last year we went to southern Germany and are heading to Austria this year. I'm sure that if we hadn't had our awful Scottish holiday we would still be the happy proud owners of a (genuine) Conway and OH would still be saying NEVER!!
It took me 10 years to persuade OH to camp - we then got a Pennine Pathfinder folding camper, because I said NEVER to a caravan .... then in October of our first season we arrived at the C&CC Notts DA Goose Fair Meet at about 8pm at night, in the dark and drizzle and had to pitch in the headlights and wet - the (disabled - he was in a wheelchair) couple who arrived on the next pitch 15 minutes after us with their caravan still had the kettle on looong before we did (and we were pretty slick at pitching!!). I still said NEVER to a caravan - I wasn't having one of those dark holes!!! Then on the Saturday we had a look in the Baileys in the trade area - what a revelation - HUGE roof-lights, big bathrooms, real showers, all that light and space ..... so now we have a caravan and I have to admit I love it!!
We camped for years, then our next door neighbours wanted to sell their caravan, have traded up finally to a new (2003) one and now want a double axle. I always maintained that I didn't want a caravan but am so glad that we have one now. That said, we are going away to the Isle of Wight for a week this Saturday with the tent.
Well at least you did get one plus out of going to Scotland in the wet weather, a caravan and by the sounds of things you "love it" so, Scotland did you a favour(in a round about way of course !).
I was exactly the same.. Used to take 2 holidays a year one to Florida and one to Spain. Until missed out on late deal abroad and had a week in a static at cut price. Then last May day went to a kitcar show thinking of a new hobby and the wife was looking at a tent stand and threatened to buy one. Two weeks later bought a caravan and went away for Whitsun. This was followed by another six trips away last year. Visited show at NEC last year and bought a brand new Bailey Pagent which was collected in January. We love it and have had lots of Childrens friends parents considering buying a van as they see us away every other week for a long weekend in the summer and think how great it is. I dont miss my Florida holidays yet and I think it is a much better hobby than the kitcar idea.
Snap - can't he;p with the curtains, but been and done exactly the same, started off with a cheapy tent, enjoyed chilling out so much but not packing away wet tent so decided on a bit of luxury and brought a sunncamp TT, took us 6 hours to erect and that was without all the frilly linings inside so gave this up as a bad job and sold it on e-bay - went and brought a new Royall Garronne 6 tent as OH swore he would never have a caravan, they were only for old fogies - guess what we have since brought a caravan - more space, more comfort in fact absoulutely wonderful - had our 1st weekend during May bank holiday and next one this Friday with 7 other groups who are all in tents - weather forecast is not too brilliant so I wonder how many of them will be looking at buying a caravan during June - anyway hope you have some luck with the curtains and if anybody is at Deerglade, Hanworth in Norfolk at the weekend - give us a look we are the ones with the pirate flag on our perfectly formed warm and spacious Bailey Ranger.
my oh mentioned a caravan 20 years ago, how i wish i had said yes, we would have had 20 years of great holidays, instead of 18 months. i said NO NO NO to tent caravan or anything that moved, then our lad went camping for a weekend with his mate and we went to see what it was all about. HOOKED there and then, tent off ebay for £36 and away the next weekend.
can't wait for next weekend!!!!!! away AGAIN
