We picked up our brand new first caravan a couple of weeks ago and are planning to use this coming weekend.
Having to kit it out from scratch I was debating whether t use calor or BP light bottles. When I mentioned to the dealer that I was intending to use 1 X 10kg BP light bottle he told me that it was ilegal to carry a 10kg bottle and yet I have seen in several magazines and on forums that people have installed 10kg BP bottles. Was he correct in this statement or was he using dealers licence toget us to purchase calor which he stocked? I opted for calor as I had read that calor maybe bringing a lightweight version of their own.
Hi peardrops- we have used Calor for some time and last year changed to BP Gaslight. We have a 10kg and a 5kg bottle. We have never been told that it is illegal to carry a 10kg- anyway from what I have heard Calor have brought out a 10kg also in the lightweight version. Cheers Gary
not for me because i have seen what can happen on heavy braking with a caravan,so 6 or 7 kgs is heavy enough for me.a larger one may want to leave of its own accord if brake sharp.
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
>>When I mentioned to the dealer that I was intending to use 1 X 10kg BP light bottle he told me that it was ilegal to carry a 10kg bottle .
Ah sounds like he only had calor bottles then , but to tell you it was illegal , is pretty naughty . If he was right , then BP have made a huge mistake making bottles that can't be carried in a caravan .
Here's some info people may find useful , i've just weighed a full 10kg BP Gaslight bottle and a full 7kg Calor gas bottle ( both bottles are propane ) The results BP weighs 16.8kg and Calor 15kg .
I carry an 11kg propane bottle and a 7kg propane bottle and it is perfectly legal. The only thing that you have to take care of is that your caravan's nose weight is set at the lower of the caravan's max noseweight as defined by the manufaturer or the car's max noseweight as defined by the manufacturer and plated on your towbar.
Easiest thing to do is ask the dealer what law would you be breaking, then you will certainly see if he can back it up with fact. I would like to bet that he would start to waffle his way out of the statement
I bet the dealer is a calor dealer .As a matter of interest i asked the caravan club if they intended to stock BP gaslight on their sites and they stataed that they were negotiating with the gas suppliers and would let me know when they have reached an agreement .
If i was starting from scratch i would buy BP gaslight Col
"If i was starting from scratch i would buy BP gaslight" Col
So would I but it's quite an expensive business changing from one system to another and having investigated what's involved, I decided to stay with Calor.
