On a recent trip with our new Bailey senator oklahoma,we had just pitched up at Morvich and thought a nice cup o tea was in order.When i opened the cupboard above the sink,a few plastic glasses a pepper urn and the plastic edging strip of the top shelf came tumbling out.I noticed later on that there was a small hole in the worktop next to the sink
   I think that maybe it was the plastic pepper urn that caused the hole as thats maybe the heaviest item.I am off the opinion that the edging strip should'nt be coming off like this,especially in the area above the sink and cooker.if that had'nt come off i do'nt think these things would have fell out.I also am surprised that they arent glued in or stapled or something.They're seemingly ment to stay in place by the pinching pressure of the plastic on either side of the wood.
    I contacted my dealer on return and told him of this as well as a few other problems.He said that the only thing there might be a problem with under the warranty was the hole in the worktop.However he said he'd explain the circumstance to Bailey and wait to see what they said.
    Personally i think this is a design fault and as well as being fixed in place better,there should also be little metal rail or something to stop things falling out.
    I'm just hoping that with Baileys good reputation for after sales service they'll sort this under the warranty.
    I wonder if anyone else has had any experience of this happening and whether bailey Fixed it under the warranty?
Its been a couple of weeks now and i'm still wating to hear from the dealer.

Hi

I had an LMC caravan and a coffee jar fell out of the cupboard and made a small hole in the work surface. My caravan was only 6months old at the time. I contacted the dealer and was told that it would not be covered under the warranty as I caused the dammage. They said they could replace the work surface for a mere £790.00. The hole was still there when I sold the van last month. According to the dealer, caravan work surfaces are made of cardboard covered with formica not strong enough to withstand any impact.

I hope you have more luck with Bailey than I had with LMC

Many faces of caravan fitments are what we generally term as Melamine. In fact melamine resin or melamine formaldehyde (called also, incorrectly, melamine) is a plastic material made from melamine and formaldehyde by polymerization.


Melamine resin is often used to saturate decorative papers which are directly laminated onto particle board or in the case of caravans 3mm ply and has no thickness or strengh whatsoever.

Formica®, and the associated surface products that are sometimes referred to under this name, are in essence melamine saturated paper products that have then been laminated under high pressure to form a hard surface.

There are varying thicknesses of these Formica® type products to allow for postforming, weight and of course cost.

I would never assume that caravan manufactures choose worktop surfaces on a cost basis so we must believe that if they have chosen a thin surface it must be because of weight.

Incidentally a 400gram tin falling edge-on on a 0.5mm thickness of Formica® would probably puncture it.

This little bit of trivia does not answer your question but might help you in understanding what sort of surfaces you have in your caravan.

Van worksurfaces are garbage in an ordinary kitchen BUT for a Van they work because they are light look solid and do a basic job,  i have seen some holes repaired with a tile but i suppose it depends where the hole has occured, sorry to tell you but unless you have a fantastic dealer you will be very very lucky to have this repaired under warranty, all the best non the less.

Thanks for the replies.However none of your examples(or links to) of similar accidents really mirror ours,in that none of you say that the plastic edging strip came away,but merely something fell out.In this the company concerned can maybe argue that you never packed things away carefully or had too many objects up there.
   The plastic edge strip came off in our case though.This strips main function is obviously to prevent things falling out.If it comes off and allows things to fall out and damage the worktop then thats faulty goods as far as im concerned and should be covered under the warranty.
    I would advise other Bailey owners to inspect shelving above vulnerable areas like this and glue or secure them some other way.I myself am thinking of making up a little metal rail as well to screw into the cupboard walls.
