Just delving into the possible of a caravan (tenters currently) and are taken by the Burstner vans. We've only been in one at a dealership and are going to look at a private one in a couple of days. I've heard that the quality is very good, and the dealer did support that even though he dealt with other makes too. Does anyone have any comments on Burstner vans, both good and bad. We are looking at one a couple of years old with a fixed bunk layout.

Hi Jane, we have a Burstner dealer near us in Wellington. We took a look at some when we were starting out.

They were very nice inside and very well insullated, the salesman said the roof was strong enough to walk on ( ideal for cleaning ) the only problem i found was they were quite heavy and they only had new ones which were out of our price range.

Altogether though a good looking van, Good luck in your search

Most german vans are awesome, solid built and bomb proof. Burstner are very nice indeed, check out geist, cristall and hymer too....

We have looked at a second hand one too, the 4 berth mid diner layout. Very solid, very practical, very heavy.

Not the best looking van on the market, but you can feel the Germanic build quality.

It feels like it will last forever.

Probably will last 4 ever - wouldnt ever walk on a roof - despite the assurances.. then again im about 15 stone so not a good idea..!

We too have just moved from the tenting world to the world of caravaning, we have just bought a Dethleffs camper 540, it was a bit heavy for the car so we are changing the car to accomodate it (We were contemplating changing anyway this just forced our hand).

The build quality of the German vans seemed great compared to some and my hubby being an engineer loves all things German including cars.

We were told we too could walk on the roof (don't think i'll bother though!)

Anyway the only thing I would say our Van (Which we haven't yet picked up) is built competely to english spec for the British market, but I would check with Burstner as we saw one where the door was on the wrong side.

Also Insurance is a bit difficult as some companies just won't insure German vans we are finding.

My knowledge is very limited as as I say we haven't picked it up yet.

I had a Burstner for 6 years without any major problems.  I sold it 2 years ago. It was brought into the country by another party which meant the door was on the off side of the van and had to be acounted for on some sites where you had to place the jockey wheel on a flag.

Thanks for all these comments. In the end we have been swayed to buy Burstner (second hand 2005 model). It just felt solid and well made. You're right about the door, it is on the continental side, but any compromises we'll have to make will just have to be dealt with as and when they happen. Other than the door, everything else is to UK spec.

I haven't had too many problems getting insurance quotes, only one refused.

don't worry about the door. we have the foreign door (sat in it on my xda right now!) never caused us a problem. usually get the fresh grass in the awning! I'm at cleethorpes haven site now and we just put it on hitch first. welcome to foreign van ownership! as for insurance - we use c&cc and they are great. some idiot firms are obsessed with hobbys and the travelling community so you may have problems with those.
