Have decided to sell our 6 berth tent and buy a caravan. Trouble is we don't really know that much about caravaning. So would appreciate some advice. Thinking about a 4 berth with a toilet, shower, cooker, fridge etc. Not to sure which makes are considered good and which are consideredbad vans, also what good/bad points to look out for. Any advice would be helpful.

Being new to caravanning, if i were you i would nip to your local caravan dealer and have a mooch around for an hour or so to familiarise yourself with the layout, sizes, appliances etc of various caravans, it will give you an idea of what you are looking for.
Looking around sites, the majority of vans around the UK seem to be Baileys. There are European vans around which reputedly have much better build quality, although this usually means they are heavy and expensive too. If it is your first caravan, then I would look for something light and well balanced. the Avondales seem to fall into this category. Nine has the battery and gas bottle compartments just in front of the axle, rather than over the A frame which makes for excellent weight distribution. Not sure if Avondale continued doing this with the later models. I hope so, as when I replace my van (hopefully not for a while yet) I would like to go for something similar.
The best thing to do is to go to as many dealers as possible and have a look around then decide which lay out you like best, don't let any salemen talk you into parting with your money until you have decided.
When you decide what you are after look at e bay and similar sites. I managed to get a Charisma 550 four berth, one year old, serviced, used once, fully kitted out, for five thousand less than the new price, plus I did not have to buy a thing for it. I was very happy with the deal as was the seller.
One word of advice though, if you take this route check the van out thoroughly with the relevant agencies.
Make sure you look at plenty of different lay outs first to see what suits your needs, we personally have only ever had end washrooms as OH likes to use shower without having to use the combined toilet/shower facility of others without end washroom
We used to camp too but dont think i could go back to a tent now
We have just switched from tent to tin - we had to camp last week because we had already made commitments to others - but my goodness we really missed the convenience of the van - eventhough we have nearly every conceivable gadget for the tent.
We spent ages looking at caravans and ended up with a new Bailey 550/6 as we have three children - i think you really do need to just go round dealers looking at the different layouts. good luck and hope you find one you like
