Hi,

Just bought our first caravan and need to adjust it to fit a cot for my son - can I remove a rear bench seat for this? I don't want to cause damage! Any good tips for caravanning with babies? (well, he is 14 months so older baby!)

Thanks

Does he really need a cot anymore? Or will a railing along the side of one of the beds or benches do (to prevent him from falling out of bed in his sleep)? What is the layout of your van?

I use a tomy bed guard along the edge of the double bed (but usually stay in the van or awning once she's asleep - just in case!) Thenonce it's time for me to go to bed take the guard down and sleep along side her. Hubby and son sleep in the back of the caravan.

She's nearly two now, but did this last year and it worked really well for us.

Good luck with it and Happy Holidays.

i cut a length of 1/4" smooth ply to size at 71"x 13" and then fitted  some lengths of plastic u shaped covering to go on the top to keep little fingers away, and have put that along the front of the lower bunk bed..as it's a side dinette bunk bed ..with a rear washroom .. while travelling it will serve to keep some taller and lighter objects we wish to take like boxes of nappies baby foods ect. ect .  we're taking my 7 month old grandaughter this week to the sea side in cornwall for a fortnight ..redisicover my sand castle building skills!! .....nice..

it should.. and has to serve the purpose ..

we used a bed guard on one of the front seats for our daughter, she is 2 now but started caravanning at 2 weeks old, and she was quite happy to sleep on there. now she is 2 she sleeps on the bottom bunk of the dinette with the bed gurad to stop her falling off. we were going to get a small narrow cot from ikea but decided against it as it would be in the way

Hi,

Thanks for the replies. He stands up alot in his cot and bounces - I would be worried with a bed guard he would bounce over it. The layout is sofas/double bed at the top, kitchen at the side with bathroom and wardrobes opposite and 2 smaller bench seats at the end with a curtain partition. It was one of these that I was going to try and pull up out of the way. Has anyone done this? We would be using it alot so would like him to have a permanent bed of his own.

We had the same layout in our Abi Marauder

A travel cot fitted perfectly within the two seats so there was no need to take one out.

Or we would make it into a bed without the cushions and then put the travel cot on top.

Both worked well with ours

Ok, if he is a bouncer, you definitely do need a cot, or he'll do a salto over the bedguard...
Try a folding cot or carefulls remove one of the side benches, should be no problem.

we put rear cushons down to make bed, then placed travel cot on top.if your child likes to jump around like ours, then try and secure the cot. we use a couple of bungie cords that we can hook round the cot and it is really secure. you will obviously have to try it out to see what works best.

Wow i'm sure you're describibg my 15 month old!!! He bounces in his cot too. This was a worry for us also, we've bought a narrow travel cot from vertbaudet & it fits at the end of our van at side of L-shaped seating. It would fit between the front seats but i feel safer sleeping near the door. Just give your space a measure you could fit a small cot in too.
